Earlier Reputation This is an outstanding car for the money. The exterior styling is first class.evryone says it needs more power,If your a speedster then yes, If not the power of this car is just right. If you can purchase an extended warranty from warrantybynet and get the wrap coverage for 729 Its all you need along with hyundai''s 100000 powertrain coverage. Could use more power. Great car, comes with a excellent warranty. I always get positive reponses in the looks department. People are always telling me it looks like the new Jag. Compared to other cars in this class you can''t beat the Sonata on price or warranty. For the price you pay you get a whole lot of car and a fine warranty to boot. un-inspiring V-6 Road noise Lack of caring from the service department Turning Radius My wife and I researched vehicles for 6 months prior to purchasing one. I was intrigued by the Sonata and the positive press it had recieved. I also wanted to check out the Santa Fe. One drive in the Sonata and she had to have it. No SUV for me that day. Oh well, I continued to drive my Cherokee. Over a year has passed and we continue to be pleased with this purchase. We have had no major trouble and have had minimal warranty work done, mainly finish items. Gas mileage is decent, ride is good, and overall we are fairly satisfied. The best part of owning this vehicle is the looks and questions we get from complete strangers. Last September we were at a restaurant north of Lansing Michigan and person after person was stopping to look at the car. Strange. If you do not want to spend an extra $5,000.00 to 7,000.00 for a Camry or an Accord, check out this vehicle. The warranty brings a piece of mind even if the dealers service department stinks, which ours does. I sensed a lack of caring. Still for what you get for the price, the value is very good. Power! (181 hp), Shiftronic Trans., Fit and finish, smooth ride, very good MPG (about 26 combo), great styling. EXCELLENT warranty and value.
Weakness:
Few pesky rattles that have been resolved. Bulbs for the front turn signals are visible in beautiful design of headlamp assembly. Trunk a bit small,But seat folds down. Carpeting easy to stain. I have owned many new cars in my time, but this Hyundai is awesome! Its smooth , quiet, efficient, luxurious, and FUN! In fact, I traded my gas- guzzling, snail- like PT Cruiser for this car. I am pleased with the dealer that services it as well, I purchsed the car in Va Beach, VA, but take it to a local dealer in Newport News (Hall Hyundai), and they treat me like a king. I have had a few rattles in the moonroof, but after a few visits, it has been resolved. In fact, last time I took it in, they cahanged the oil, rotated tires, washed it and filled the tank, FREE of charge. (They felt bad that the rattle was''nt resolved the first time.) The car is a dream. I have a LX with tan leather and pearl white paint...stunning! I have been asked by several folks if it is the new "small Jag". I tell them no, (I like a car that runs!) It only says "Hyundai" on the deck lid, so I can see why the confusion exists. This car is a keeper and i highly recommend one to anyone looking for a mid-size sedan. Hyundai Sonata GLS V6
Strength:
Interior & exterior styling, powertrain
Weakness:
Braking, nose pitching in hard braking The Sonata has exceptional, but reedy acceleration. The style in which it was fashioned is, I think, quite up to par with its competitors. I know this because within the family there are a 2002 Honda Accord V6 and a 1999 Toyota Camry XLS V6 and I have driven both and neither excels in any one area that the Sonata does not. Yes, the hp ratings for the other two cars are higher than the Sonata''s but you can''t really tell the difference acceleration wise. Also all of these cars have little body roll and just because one car''s nose dives deeper than another it doesn''t make a big difference. I really don''t think that people go out to buy a car with nose pitch in mind. Also I know that the Sonata''s stopping distances aren''t the best but they aren''t horrible, and for a car that was just recently supported by Hyundai they are pretty good. Hyundai doesn''t have as much experience with the mid-sized seedan category as either Honda or Toyota, I''ll grant you that but Hyundai is trying and will succeed. |

Strength:
Price, style and comfort. The V6 engine is powerful, quiet and smooth.
Weakness:
Aotomatic transmission is not as smooth as I expected. Sometimes I can feel a faint slip with it shifts from gear 1 to 2. Though is not a big problem it affect my feeling towards this car. In general, it is a quality car with style and comfort. Standard equipments include many things which are options in other brands. The GLX or GLS is the best. Gas millage and highway performance is good. The car is roomy and comfort and gives you a luxury feel. This car may not be a good match of Camry or Accord but is much better than Malibu or Sebring or Grand AM. Similar Products Used: 92 Accord |

A lot of "stuff" for a little money.
Weakness:
The dealers and Hyundai Consumer Service Department for not caring about their customers. I have had my 2000 Sonata since November 1999. I bought it new and paid $17,090, everything included. The car has been very good so far, I have about 32,500 miles on it. I have had some trouble with dealers and service departments as others have mentioned in their write ups. I still think I got a good deal when you compare other cars in the class, such as Camrys, Accords, Galants and even the Mazda 626 (with a V-6). The way I think of it is I can have a new Hyundai or a used Toyota or Honda for the same price. The 5-year bumper to bumper warranty has been useful to me and after arguing with service departments, I have always gotten the work needed done for nothing. Back to the car, the ride is still smooth and quiet and all the "gadgets" still work like new (power windows, locks, mirrors, etc....) It has been all over the eastern united states, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Florida. My wife is the primary driver and she makes dozens of short trips each day. The car shows no signs of unusual wear because of these short trips. I recommend it if you are going to keep it 5 years or more. If you do not keep it at least that long, the depreciation will catch up with you. |
