Strength:

Affordable, comfortable, good looks, moderate gas milage, un-beatable warranty

Weakness:

High accident repair cost, high maintenance cost. Car bounces at high speeds on interstate

When I set out to buy my first car, I had nothing but hopes and dreams of finding a comfortable car that I loved, but could also afford. I found this in my 99 Sonata. The interior is set up perfectly for my driving style. Although the low end acceleration leavs a lot to be desired, the top speed is nothing to laugh at. At about 42000 miles the balance belt broke and destroyed the crank angle sensor. The warranty covered everything and I was back on the road in a few days. The only severe problem I have run into is getting the car fixed after a major accident. Finding competent repair shops that can fix these cars is very difficult. 6000 just in body work on the front end. Another 2000 for an engine. Good thing I have full coverage :-)

Strength:

Stylish, comfortable ride at an affordable price with the best warranty in the business.

Weakness:

Not a whole lot of power even in the V6. I hesitate to think of the limited power that the 4 cylinder might generate. Somehow, I find the visibility a bit limited, but I may just need to adjust myself. Hyundai stigma is still hard to overcome. Be prepared for snickers or doubts from coworkers and family. These become noticeable less after they ride in the car.

The 2002 Sonata is a great deal. For the price it can’t be beat. The exterior is very stylish and a great improvement from Hyundai’s past designs. The interior is roomy enough and comfortably plush with leather, climate control and all “extras” including side airbags. The warranty is unbeatable. Hyundai’s “shiftronic” automatic transmission is a great compromise and makes driving a lot more fun. Right now this car is in high demand, so finding an LX in the color scheme you want can be difficult. We got lucky and found exactly what we were looking for. All around it seems to be a fantastic car, and would still be a great deal even if it were a few thousand more. Far more stylish and comfortable than the new Honda Accord.

Strength:

The v6 181 hp engine, the 16" alloy wheels, all the features for such a low price!

Weakness:

The door panels rattle when on bumpy roads.

I love this car! This is the second 2002 Sonata GLS I have owned. My other one (bordereau w/tan interior)was totaled in an accident on December 9, 2001, only one month after I bought it! (It protected me from serious injury). I missed it so much and just had to get another one (ebony black w/black interior). My neighbors, coworkers, friends and family think it is a lovely car and many of them thought it was a Jaguar! I tell them it is my Faux Jag. I love the wood paneling inside and all the features: cd player, cassette, am/fm radio, carpeted floor mats with "Sonata" embroderied on them, mud guards, the list goes on and on! I had a 1988 Plymouth Sundance for 14 years and I can never go back to manual windows, manual locks ever again. I am spoiled in the Sonata.

Great Looking car, super quiet ride, very solid construction, 5Yr-60000 mile bumber to bumper warranty + 10yr 100000 mile powertrain warranty.

Weakness:

Heated seats not offered as an option.

Drove many different mid-size cars:(Camry,Altima,Accord,)But the Sonata was by far the clear winner. I''m a huge Toyota fan, but dollar for dollar It was a no brainer. A fully loaded Camry was $30000,my Sonata Lx was $20700 6Cyl, automatic with shiftronic transmission, traction control, 4 wheel a.b.s. 4 wheel disc brakes, 16" Michelin''s with alloys, Leather seats, cruise,Tilt, PS,PB,PW,PL, Power Moon Roof,am-fm-cd-casette, with six speakers, Anti theft alarm with keyless remote entry and alot more...

Model Reviewed: Hyundai Sonata GLS V6

Strength:

Solid build, aesthethically pleasing, a bargain for anyone wanting a luxury sedan for less than $20K. Good mileage and handling, loads of extras.

Weakness:

A bit slack on gear shifting, windows steam up easily in cold weather, smallish trunk space, still has "lemon" stigma.

Gotta Love All Those Extras Powertrain warranty is still best in (and outside) its class. Power windows, locks, mirrors, are all pretty much standard gear in this class. Power moonroof is bonus. CD/Cassette/AM-FM Stereo is decent enough. Power/tilt steering and cruise control combined with decadent V6 engine acceleration and "fuzzy logic" handling makes for a control freak''s dream. A bit skippy between 1st and 2nd gear on this automatic transmission, but this is subject to the driver. Not your father''s old gas guzzler, it gets a respectable 30mpg (7.9l/100km) on the open highway. Steel sidebeam reinforcements and dual airbags add to better safety, along with ABS braking. Impeccable styling on the interior and exterior, could be mistaken for mid-range Jaguar from the side or rear, and leather seats, gearshift, and wrapped steering wheel makes for something you''d expect to pay a lot more money for. The woodgrain interior trim looks something like aged birdseye maple, something reserved for the high-end cars. The rear seat has room for three adults, and folds 60/40 split for large item hauling. Didn''t get the power driver''s seat, but that''s no big deal given everything else. One thing to note in really colder weather is that the windows tend to steam up even with the heating fans turned on full blast, so best watch for this in -20 degrees Celcius. Lights are everywhere, and amply bright. Very nice chrome grill on the front and chrome lettering on the trunk. Hint: go for either silver or urban grey, they are the least expensive to insure and are less noticed by police and car theives. Checked out some web sites that featured Sonatas that were in car accidents, and the Sonata can take a fair amount of punishment. I like the suspension, much nicer than MacPherson struts, and the shock absorbers smooth out all but the larger bumps and dips. Chrome wheels are sporty, didn''t care much for the exposed brakes. This car is meant for streets and highways, the uncivilized roads will not be kind to this sort of vehicle. Can''t wait to take this car into the mountains along the Icefield Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. A fun, sophisticated car without the sophisticated pricetag.

Model Reviewed: Sonata LX

Strength:

Improved exterior and interior styling, excellent ergonomics in cabin, side & front airbags, climate control, 60/40 split in fold down back seat, good visability from driver''s seat, smooth yet sporty ride, good lumbar adjustment, supportive leather seats, remote for locks & trunk, struts for hood & trunk support, Michelin tires, sport mode on auto trans, 16" alloy wheels, decent standard audio CD system,

Weakness:

Smaller moon roof than competition, poor cruise control placement, hard to find models with ABS & traction control, engine power of 2.7L six is adequate but not as powerful as some competition that costs $5,000 - $10,000 more,

There''s a reason Hyundai sales are up 80% from last year without resorting to 0% financing. Not only has the product vastly improved, some models are actually more stylish than most of the competition. The designers at Hyundai have smartly copied ideas from other companies. For instance, many of the interior design areas seem to have been copied from the interior of the Lexus ES 300, Some exterior styling cues seem to come from Jaguar and Infinity. Obviously these other cars are better in many ways than the Sonata LX and may be worth double the price; however, when you take into consideration all you get for $19,000, the car is a great deal. Obviously, the big question is reliability; even with the great warranty, will Hyundai make certain its dealers adhere to the warranty language? In addition, the dismal resale value of previous models is a question that only the perceived improved quality can change. A test drive and inspection of the 2002 Sonata goes a long way in changing the old perception. One has the feeling that the Hyundai name will mean quality and value in a few years. Will Korean products follow the same path Japanese products did 25 years ago from being junk to being the best made in the industry?

Strength:

Beautiful design, loads of standard features, exceptional initial quality feel, remote control with trunk release, power everything, unbelievable car for the price. Big gas tank for long journeys.

Weakness:

I found one very small irregularity in the paint; a spot about the size of the head of a pin, fear of previous Hyundai quality, fear of low resale value (we will see?)

I can''t believe the beauty of this car!!! My boss thought it was a Lexus! I have had different people think it was a Jaguar or Mercedes. There is no car in the world right now that comes close to the style and solid feel of this car for anywhere near this price. A fully equipped Honda Accord or Toyota Camry would be about $5,000 more and they are quite bland compared to this. Mine is black with a black interior and it is absolutely elegant! The dealer gave me such a good price that I added a spoiler and tinted windows and still came out below suggested retail! This car feels like quality; when you shut the doors and trunk, there is a solid "shunk" that you would hear on an Acura or Audi. The ride is very smooth and quiet, yet the handling inspires confidence without that "floaty" feel of a Buick. All of the standard features on this car would be expensive add ons or packages with the competition. Even the standard cd player sounds exceptional with tweeters mounted separately in the door pillars for enhanced sound. It really has some punch to it for a "stock" system. My car only has 350 miles on it so far, but every mile has been a pleasure. I drove home from Dallas to Austin and found myself driving much faster than I thought due to the isolation of noise. So far this car is fantastic. I love the fact that the lights turn off when the key is taken out. I am looking forward to more experience with my new Sonata.

Strength:

Deceivingly large interior, same deceivingly large trunk space, super super smooth ride, all the additions are standard: a/c, c/d, stereo, etc.

Weakness:

Can''t find one yet.

After driving only used cars, I finally was able to look at buying a new car. I looked at Hyundai because a close trusted friend of mine is a mechanic for Hyundai and highly recommended these cars, after working on both American and Foreign Cars, he HIGHLY recommended the Hyundai. I test drove the XG300, Santa Fe and then the Sonata last. I was extremely surprised to find the Sonata drove just a great and smooth as the XG300 luxury model. After deciding on the Sonata and driving it around for the past 3-1/2 months, I have not had a regret yet. It drives like a much larger, heavier car, has LOTS of interior room (much much larger than the Volvo''s I used to drive) and power when you want it. The body design looks very much like a Jaguar, yet different from anything else on the road. After looking at the Camry, Accord, Altima, etc., I am very satisfied with my choice.

Strength:

Well equipped even at the base model level. Smooth ride, roomy, nice pickup with shift-tronic option with automatics. Nice on the eyes and the price tag is just right, which beats paying the cost for the Altima''s, Camry''s, or Maxima''s.

Weakness:

Can''t think of any just yet!

I was looking for a car that was relatively low in cost, reliable, and fun to drive. I went and test drove a 2002 Hyundai Sonata and found this and more right away. This car looks like a Mercedes Benz on the outside and is comfortable and well equipped with standard features inside. For a growing family this is our perfect vehicle, and we would recommend this car to anyone
