Strength:

Awesome looks, everyone wants a ride. Great gas mileage.. .manual shifts beautifully.. Good power. Fun, Fast and Sexy.

Weakness:

Kind of loose around corners. Substantial under-steer too when taking off from the line. Couple of rattles here and there. Plastic scratches easily. Not enough power. But, that is apparently easily remedied with the bolt-on turbo for the V6 which I plan to add on.

Love the car. Great buy, again.. its fun, its fast, its sexy. Love driving with the windows down, sunroof open and the kick ass stereo blasting... If you want to be different, get an eclipse.. hondas, camaros, mustangs are everywhere.. and those camaros and mustangs are at the pumps... at a hefty near $3 per gallon of gas... Be different - O2 Kewl!

I had a truck just before this, that definitely doesn't comare. But I did have the pleasure of owning a 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo 5speed. I have to say that car in its 80K miles I drove it it was problem free - here is hoping this diamond star car will last as long and as trouble free. However, the 4cyl. turbo was definitely faster than the V6.

I own a 1993 Talon TSi - FWD & an Eclipse GS-T - FWD (unfortunately I didn't get a taste of that AWD action)

- turbo, turbo, and more turbo (and the fact that w/ a $50 BOV from a 3000GT you can handle boost well above stock... and with a few free hacks you can be dropping 14-15 psi without a hitch on pump gas w/o an upgraded fuel pump, though $90 for an manual boost controller is a smarter option... 19-20 psi spikes are NOT good)
- looks hella nice... real head turner when freshly washed... I have a red Eclipse so you know... cops seem to look a bit more, too :(
- infinity audio stock on the 2nd Generation, 10 disk changer in trunk
- fluggin indestructable engine under most circumstances... read below :)

Weakness:

- fluggin really brittle engine under some circumstances :)... the water pump on my talon leaked... causing the tensioner for the timing belt to fail... this of course killed every one of the valves on intake and exhaust side... luckily pistons were okay.
- fluggin messed up retarded motor... the 2nd gen is notorious for crankwalk... where the crank will actual move a bit more in the *wrong* direction that its supposed to... this of course kills the entire engine... I should be so lucky; not but a week ago (and only 2000miles above 100,000miles) I was driving rather spiritedly on the hiway (governer hits in at 130mph unfortunately) and as soon as I got off... idle was crap, idle vacuum was 14inHG (should be 18) and a/f guage was reading lean... exhaust smelled rich, though... tested the compression on all cylinders; cyl 3 was down to 22psi... *&@%!!!!!! (supposed to be 175psi on '95+ models) it wasn't crankwalk, wasn't overboosting, wasn't overrevving, never mishifted... a friggin mystery blow out ...well, I am rebuilding the motor right now, but I will be selling shortly there after... two motors from the exact same car is just too much for me to handle...
- FWD tranny is brittle as heck... not more than a few seconds of wheel hop can cost you an axle if you're sporting enough HP and torque... I sold my talon to my bro and after 3 months the first gear flew threw the tranny case... the 5th gear assembly nut came off on me, too... totally trashed the inside of the tranny...

Very fun and bad A car to own and drive... looks to kill... I have beat so many people in these cars in street and hiway races it's not even funny... I've only been moderately modded (running high 13's) but the only car that took me in that same range was an NSX... but it was fun just to race that $80K hunk of metal.

These things are VERY high maintenance, have MANY recalls and MAJOR problems... some people get lucky, but I can guarantee one of the major things will happen. If it's not the engine (TB breaking, or overboosting or whatever) or the tranny (transfer case for you AWDers), it something else.... I have 2 generations and over 5 years experience with these things... they're tough buggers.

I love my cars... but I don't have the time, nor the extra change to keep up with them. Great fun while it lasted I must admit. My ratings are low, but that's only because I've had so much trouble... it wouldn't have been 5 stars if it weren't for my 2G motor failure... dangit

I'm getting a WRX :)

Similar Products Used:

...nothing is comparable when a bit of time and dough is thrown in these things... for just short of $1000 well spent dollars you can be running high 13's in even the FWD turbo... don't believe me... get one.

Impreza WRX would be only closest match, and the Mitsu EVO VII when it comes over in a few years... but I'm afraid due to mitsu sticking with the same 4G63 engine... I can't fall for that again :(

This is a great car for those of us that don't have cash lying around. Looks great, feels great, and gets great mileage.

Weakness:

Paint around windshield peels easily. Eats brakes like godzilla.

It seems that a lot of people have had problems with these cars. I have too, but nothing terrible. Here's a summary of what happened:
1. Bought the car at around 70,000 miles, needed new clutch within a week
2. Car overheated at about 76,000 miles-water pump had stopped. This was not a mechanical problem, however. It seems that these cars are notorious for breaking their stock timing belt, and whoever replaced it to prevent this threw the system out of alignment, so water pump was not getting power.
3. Power window switch crapped out at about 78,000 miles - I took off the trim and found that the solder had broken off of the terminal.

Besides these minor (except clutch) problems, this is a great car. Although it is a little underpowered off the line, the 16 valve DOHC four can do pretty well with a good driver. Tossing in a turbo, or just buying a GST, would remedy this.

Model Reviewed: Eclipse GT w/ 5 speed & Premium Package

Strength:

Awesome Looks. Great Handling. Decent acceleration. Good top end speed. Excellent Stereo. THE WOMEN LOVE IT!!! Good AC. Lots of compliments. Lots of little luxuries. 5 speed is cheeper.

Weakness:

It could be faster. The cup holders are in the way of my shifter. Could be a little more roomier, but what can i say its a sports car.

I have fallen in love with the car. I think it could be a little faster but its fast enough for me to kill myself :) The car handles so well i take curves at around 100 mph that i used to take at 50 mph. (Lets see any Mustang do that!!)At 120 mph. you can feel every wheel sink into every dip in the road. It is a strange feeling since i am used to old steel frame chevys that are so heavy they just glide at 110 mph. I really like this car. I did my research before I bought it and i can say I am very happy with it. My payments are very high. I could be driving a new Trans Am ws6 for 200 more dollars a month, but there is no way i could afford insurance on one of those. I will stick with the car. Iit seems to be almost worth the price I am paying. The ladies are always asking me to take them for a ride so I ask them why they wouldn't ride with me in my '75 El Camino. But like any man I take them for a ride anyways

Mustang 5.O My eclipse will keep up but wont come close to beating it in a drag, but it looks a hell of alot better. (To me anyways)

Strength:

This car was awsome when first bought. Quick as heck, strong motor, sharp looking. The 5 speed shifts nice and fast. Added some AR custom rims and it is super nice. When I test drove this car, I knew it was to be mine!

Weakness:

The damn timing belt blew the whole top 1/2 of the motor. $1800 to replace motor with used one and new one was not good, I dropped it off at lot and am waiting for anouther change. sigh :( This seems to be the biggest downfall with these motors, although strong, they can die real fast with no warning. I was told by my machnic my alternator froze, stoped one belt and the timing was thrown off. As this happened the motor tried to keep running, ouch..

The car is a real head turner, many complements. I love to lay on the wax and Armour All. It handles like a dream, and zips through traffic real nice. I have used the car in snow with little problems also.

I would suggest this car to people who love to drive! It is great in the city, highway, local roads and best of all long curvy roads.

The back seats are small, my kids hate them. The front seats are very comfortable. The factory installed AM/FM Cass works nice, but the speakers are beat.

The over all look of the car is AWSOME! There are many options for appearance upgrades, I went with nice rims and rubber. Even under the hood is very sweet looking!

If buying a car like this (Eclipse, Laser, Talon) I would try to get it at below book price. Mine was valued around $5000 and I got it for $3400 It is almost guaranteed that you will need to fix something, and its not cheap to do. Besides the motor I have replaced the clutch $89 (not bad) cam seals ($70) and radiator ($280)

Strength:

Sex apeal, body style, wants to run if it can at all, easy to modify and make realy quick, just a great idea.

Weakness:

Lifters click, paint is notoriously bad, electrical glitches, realy expensive parts, must maintain religiously, auto trans notoriously goes out after 80,000 to 100,000miles.

Bad Ass. I baught the car because it looked hot, a timeless design, and it still turns heads after eight years and hard use. I've put 11,000miles on it in three months, and the only problems I have had were with the fog light switches, and quirks like that. The sound great, stick to the road like glue even with cheap tires, and this model is pretty cheap to maintain. It's reasonably quick even for a base 1.8 SOHC, and emediatly gets the respect of import racing enthusists. Just overall a realy neat car, even with it's inherant flaws.

considering it doen't have a turbo it is considerably fast. Okay car that can turn a few heads.

Weakness:

Well where do I start, After 120,000 had to replace the engine, CV joints, Clutch, leaked oil, smokes like a mother and has an unexplainable clicking noise. The body dents easy and the interior is cheap plastic that that breaks the first time you take it off. Even after putting the new engine in it still clicks. POS

I wouldn't recomment this car to any one unless you want to keep spendiing the cash. I do like 95 and up Mitshubishi eclipses and am going to buy a 95 GXS.

Solid structure(an Eclipse first). Smooth, torquey V6. Great short-throw 5-speed. Refined ride/handling combo. Premium Pkg. includes features found on cars costing much more. Great Infinity stereo system.

Weakness:

Body shape is nice, but details aren't,i.e. fake vents in front bumper and ribbed doors. A locking gas cap would be nice, too.

I would highly recommend this car for anyone looking for a "Gran Turismo" type car - speed and power are effortless and ride is superb. For $24k or less it's a tough value to beat in the new car/coupe market.

Model Reviewed: Eclipse 1.8 Liter

Strength:

The 93 eclipse is fast, reliable, and best of all quiet. With good set of tires it can take corners at very high speeds. The handling is nice and tight.

Weakness:

OEM parts are expensive and considering the eclipse owns the honda on the road its seems to be a lot easier to purchase higher performance parts for the honda.

I would highly recommend this car because of its reliability. I bought it last May and up until now all I have had to do is puchase new tires. Of course now I am paying the price for the way I drive it and have blown my head gasket. :)

Only thing I can compare to is my previously owned 89 Daytona with a 2.5L engine. I would definately say the eclipse handles and tops out better then the daytona. Off the line its hard telling.
