Strength:

Quiet and roomy. Powerful, high revving engine. Comfortable seats. More features, and hp than Honda or Toyota for the money. Plus Honda and Toyota''s 6 cyl. don''t come with manual trans.

Weakness:

large turning radius, mediocre shifting feel(compared to the Prelude) and grabby clutch that takes some getting used to. Bose system okay, not spectacular. GET A NOSE MASK! The paint chips easily.

1 year and 23,000 miles later: No major problems. It has developed a squeak in the right front suspension and the clutch makes a whining sound, which I hope will be fixed when I bring it in for its first inspection soon. The driver''s window got screechy, but was fixed by spraying silicone around the frame. I get about 27 mpg (66% hwy,33%city). Not bad for a 6 cyl that is driven at 70+ mph on the hwys. In all, a solid, fun car, that is surprisingly nimble on curves. It''s a shame to burden this car with an automatic transmission.

Styling- My favorite looking 1989 car Power- Impressive, even still after 13 years of existenc this thing can move. Value- I''ve got my moon roof, bose stereo was descent(replaced recently),black leather that is still holding up well! Spoiler, tint, etc for under 3k Reliability- beats out my 90'' Acura Legend in terms of fixes. Change your oils and youre fine! PS- looks GOOD on custom wheels.

Weakness:

Couple things: -no cup holders? what is that about? -89'' ses don''t have power seats, and I''m a big fan of power operations. -Paint doesn''t seem the highest quality.

Bought the 1989 se 8 months ago and made me think differently about Nissans. I had commited hard to Honda/Acura but I am a new man! It''s the best value at any level. I want the 250 horses in the new ones.

Strength:

Safety in side collisions (personal experience), performance, interior fit and finish, GPS is awesome, although not worth $1,999, you can talk them down on that one.

Weakness:

Turning radius (huge). From inside, hood looks wide and disappears upfront, hard to judge distance upfront when parking or turning in close quarters.

I purchased my 1st ''02 Maxima GLE in Nov. It had every option available including Navigation (GPS). Sterling Mist w/ Black leather, spoiler etc... Great car, then got in high speed T-bone accident. Car protected passenger well, side airbag deployed, very tough car, although totaled, due to so much energy transfer and frame damage.(Better the car than the occupants). Other car (Dodge Stratus) much worse. Just minor side whiplash injury. Went out with the insurance money, could have bought many diff. types of cars for the $30,600 I was given and bought exactly the same car, right down to color and all options. Interior looks better than the bland Acura Type-S and thousands cheaper for a similar optioned car. Nissan WILL deal on the ''02 Maximas, Acura is firm, at least around Chicago. This really is a near-luxury car and is a great deal for the money when compared to many other car manufacturers, foreign or domestic.

Model Reviewed: Maxima SE/automatic

Strength:

-The engine - I felt like I was enjoying the boost of a turbocharged engine, except without the herky-jerkyness of turbo-lag - power no matter what your speed -Plain and simple, BMW-like styling -A high quality feel -Fit and finish -Interior -Smooth transmission shifting -Ride -Ergonomics -Headlights -29.3 mpg and it''s not even broken in yet

Weakness:

-Transmission has slow 1 -2 shift. Needs to shift more firmly and quickly in the SE model - OK for other models -Nissan would do well to match the performance of its impressive new engine with an equally sophisticated suspension set up -Bose really "sucks" - save your $$$ - I will replace it! -Needs a left-foot dead pedal -Handling - see remarks above - needs to be more firm in the turns. I will improve this area! -Homelink - although I got it working for the "rolling code" of the garage doors, I cannot get it to work for me to open the front gate to our gated community

Coming out of a 1998 Camaro SS that I purchased in October 1997, I searched and did my homework for a solid year before purchasing the SE. Wanted to trade the SS for an SE last year, but heard rumors of a new motor. When they did come out with the higher horse engine for ''02, I was sold. I drove everything out there at least twice (some 31 cars), and came down to three: Acura 3.2 TL, Mercedes E430, and the Passat V6. None of three above compared to the Maxima SE, but the TL came close. I realized that Honda has been riding on its reputation for quite a few years, and felt that its quality was mythical had gone somewhat downhill. The TL just felt like something was missing. After owning the SS for over 4 years, I was very, very tired of the extreme bending of the neck and back on entry egress, and the constant getting "beaten-to-death" ride. Don''t get me wrong . . . this was an excellent car . . . I just got older and tired of it too quickly! My best friend is a certified mechanic for Infiniti, and he and I are already ordering parts that will make it quicker, handle better, and sound much better.

AUTOMATIC!!!!!!!!!! I hate not being able to control my shifting!! No cupholders!

Well... it''''s an awesome car. The only bad thing is, i bought it from Tom Wood which was a very very very big mistake. I''''ve heard of scary stories from people buying from them and i found out those stories were true. At about 100,000 my stupid auto trani went out. I know for **** sure that it wasn''''t Nissan''''s fault since a friend of mine has the same car with an auto and it has 213,000+ and will burn my car, which only has 100,000. Well, that was 1500 bucks but well worth it. I''''ve put on a high flow air filter and strait exhaust to a flowmaster muffler. This thing sounds sooooo awesome. I always get compliments on how it sounds. And speed, my gosh, a family car burning mustangs (which i guess isn''''t really anything to be proud about ha ha) but this thing is fun!! GXE''''s do have a little too soft suspension but the GXE is more for luxury so i can''''t complain. I am planning on getting a 93 se and making it a street racer i.e. twin turbo, intercooled, engine build up, basically i''''m wanting to pull 600-800 horse out of this thing. Think about it, a 92-94 se doing 0-60 in 6.7 seconds with 190 horse. Now, what do you think one of those would do with 600-800 horse?? All i can say is holy $hit! I don''''t know yet though, maybe i''''m dreaming, but i really want to do this. Nissan is awesome and the Maxima is my favorite car. I would really choose this over any sports car cause it''''s hell''''a fast but it is no where near a cop magnet. What cop is going to be looking for a family car?? None, that i know of! So i really like these cars.

Every aspect of the car. The front brakes are original with over 110,000 miles on the car. The clutch lasted to 95,000 as did the rear brakes. When the engine is running at idle, I have to look at the tach to see if it is running because it is so silky smooth. Give me a break! Oh yeah, I just decided to replace the original battery after 5.75 years without a single failure! It was going fine but I didn''t want to press my luck this winter.

Weakness:

The inside of the car can get hot in the summer because of the black exterior and black leather interior. This is a great feature in the winter, however!

The 1996 Maxima is the perfect car in my opinion - the performance, reliability, and comfort are all excellent. I''ve owned this car since its birtday and it has never failed me. It has averaged 26 mgp overall and it is a pure pleasure to drive. The Bose stereo is the best I''ve ever heard in a car. I will never sell this car.

Weakness:

The remote control unit for the door is far too easy to activate by accident (in the pocket or in my hand if I am holding on to grocery bags). Thanks God it is extremely powerful and can be activated up to 100 yards away (unheard of by most people). I always re-lock the door from a distance to make sure I didn''''t unlock the doors by accident when getting out of the car. The 215/55-16 tires are expensive at $150+ per tire. I hope they will get cheaper in 12-18 months when I get around to replace mine. Servicing at the dealer is expensive - around $50-100 every time you bring the car in for an oil change. They always try to sell you additional services (e.g. Door lubrication, check breaks, rotate tires) that are outside of the owner''''s manual. Some how that tells me repair, when the time comes, will be expensive.

I have put 15k miles on my 2001 Maxima since new. The Maxima continues to run smooth with only a problem with a slight brake vibration at highway speed. I think this is due to rust accumulation on the disc (too many short trips). I need to heat up the brakes before turning the key off to minimize condensation build-up and keep the rust off. If that doesn''''t get rid of the problem I will take it to the dealer have the disc serviced. The size of the car is right for 2 to four people (two of us plus two grown-up kids or business associates). Gas mileage is respectable at 18 mpg in town and 28 on the highway. The mileage was much worst during the breaking-in period. The transmission runs smooth. The all-speed traction control (as compare to low speed units on most cars) is quiet and effective. With the exception of a snowstorm, the Maxima runs adequately in the winter condition in Canada. Interior is comfortable with all the controls right at your fingertips. Noise level is very low. The automatic air conditioning is acceptable though not overly powerful. I like the comfort and convenience of the automatic day/nigh mirror, audio controls at the steering wheel, Homelink and heated seats. The quality of finishing and workmanship is a little better than Toyota and Honda. As compare to my wife''''s Camry V6, the Maxima is more powerful and the steering is more precise. The ride in the Maxima is not as smooth due to the sporty suspension. However, road holding is better. I expect the reliability to be as good if not better than the Toyotas and Hondas. The Maxima is rated higher than Camry and Accord at the CARREIW. I am 100% satisfied with my Maxima and would buy another one again especially with 255hp engine and Xenon lights in the 2002 model year.

Strength:

Initial impressions: I love the quiet, smooth ride of the car, and its luxurious interior. Fit and finish seems first class. Radio and climate controls are superbly laid out and easy to use.

Weakness:

Dislikes: The Bose stereo is a huge disappointment so far. I''m no car audio connoisseur, but I had a Bose system in my 1990 Buick Riviera that sounded far superior. The Maxima Bose seems to seriously lack clarity and crispness. I''ve heard some people say it needs to be "broken in," so I''m hoping maybe it will get better. As of now, I am most disappointed with it. I also find it tiring to drive long distances because of the way the area where my left foot rests curves in, right where I would normally put it. Can''t seem to find a comfortable place for it, and end up feeling cramped. The instruction manual seems rather unclear in spots, especially concerning the HomeLink remote programming. Took me quite a while to figure out how to set that up, as it didn''t always indicate if a button should be HELD after it is PRESSED (for those trying this set-up, the buttons on your "rolling" garage door opener''s training module AND the car''s Home Link console must both be pressed AND held, which may require 4 hands).

Test drove a variety of SUV''s , but couldn''t see spending over 30 G''s for a vehicle with limited standard features. Traded in a 2000 Chevy Malibu LS for 2002 Maxima GLE automatic. Need I say more. This is the best car I''ve ever owned. I love to drive it.

Weakness:

Not as good as deal (in terms of performace, standard features or exterior/interior looks) as the Acura CL or TL Type S models, which are similarly priced.

I drove the 255 horse power 2002 model for several days and was quite impressed. Good acceloration with a manual transmission. With autoamatic, the performance was not impressive, although better than Camry and Accord.
