I originally bought this car to tide me over until I land a job and qualify for a loan on new 2002 BMW 3 series (I just graduated from law school). For all intensive purposes, this car was meant to be a "beater." It has 133,000 miles on it. However, I have totally fallen in love with this car. It is suprisingly powerful yet smooth. And it still looks like a modern car. It does not look like the other 10 year old cars on the road. It handles really well around the twisty turns of Mullholland Drive. The only weakness I have experienced is the factory installed Bose audio system. It failed 5 days after I bought the car. Two of the speakers began immitting a horrible ear peircing "screaching" sound. But replacing the Bose system with a better aftermarket system is VERY EASY. Even if you want to install a new headunit and new speakers, you DO NOT need to re-wire the entire car. Do not trust any audio installer that wants to charge you "extra" for "rewiring" the car. The factory wiring is sufficient even if you have the Bose system. Check out my webpage for more information regarding this issue: http://www.frysinsider.com/maxima

Strength:

Handles great, smooth, quiet ride.

Weakness:

Placement of the trunk release - I popped the trunk while driving by moving my arm to the side of the seat. Side view mirror adjustment controls - it''s impossible to adjust it correctly when you have to move forward from the seat to reach them.

The best car I''ve owned. I just love it.

- Smooth powerful V6 - 6 SPD Manual! - Great interior fit and finish - All the toys you could possibly want - great stereo for a factory system - Great bang for the buck

Weakness:

- I think I''m going to get way too many speeding tickets in this car.

I haven''t bought the car just yet, but I will be very soon. I test drove a 20th anniversary edition SE about a year ago and loved it. I wasn''t quite ready to buy just yet, so this year I went to test drive one of the 2002 SE''s with the new 255hp engine and the 6spd manual. The 2001 was fun, and this new version can only be described as funner. I haven''t had the chance to check out this rear suspension issue so many people have mentioned, but from what I do know the car is a joy to drive. The V6 engine is powerful and smooth as silk. It was an awesome feeling shifting down into 4th on the highway doing 65 and feeling the car just take off. The car handles great, and my test drive was in the rain. The interior of the car has great fit and finish, and more toys than you know what to do with. Great touches like lower lumbar support, Xeon headlights, steering wheel radio controls, and a trip computer make the car feel more expensive than it is. Fully loaded with every possible option my 2002 SE MSRP''d for 33.2k, I paid 30k. For the price this car can''t be beat, and of course you also get that Nissan reliability.

Strength:

No mechanical problems so far. Quiet smooth engine. No vibrations at idle. Teriffic fit and finish. Great road feel and handling Very comfortable seats Durable leather Great breaks (impressive stopping power) No rattles or squeeks. Cold AC Quiet cabin when cruising on highway.

Weakness:

Plain (a bit weird) exterior styling. Premium fuel needed for extra power. Lack of low end torque below 3500 rpm. Average acceleration. Average MPG (I get about 20) BOSE stereo is acceptable (could be better) Crosswinds move the car around sometimes above 70mph Limited selection of replacement 17 inch tires (225 50 17) which are expensive. Bridgestone Potenza Tires have 25,000 miles and hydroplane badly and will have to be replaced by 30k. (I rotate and balance every 6k)

I have been driving the SE (automatic trans) for almost two years (25,000 miles) and have been very happy with the car. No problems or rapairs needed. Best car I have ever owned. I plan on keeping it for a long time. This car is a great value. Just as dependable as an Accord or Camry but the Maxima is much more fun to drive. The comfortable seats are the best (The Acura TL and Accord''s seats were very uncomfortable for me). Light years ahead of the American cars I have owned. I highly recommend the SE, or the GLE if you want a softer smoother ride.

A really sound car. Good power, great fit and finish. The engine has to be one of the best in its class. This car is clearly a great buy at less than $30K. I purchased the majestic blue SE with charcoal leather interior, automatic, 6 disc cd, and moon roof.

Strength:

255 hp engine, transmission, quiet interior, fit and finish of entire vehicle.

Weakness:

Rear suspension (needs to be independent). Bose stereo - not enough treble for my tastes, however, the stereo has plenty of power.

Bought a 2002 Maxima SE with a 6 speed transmission, the Meridian package, Leather package, Bose stereo, and Sunroof. Incredibly quick car that is quiet on the road and gets above average gas mileage. Had a 97 Maxima SE with a 5 speed. This car is definitely superior in almost every classification.

Model Reviewed: /Maxima SE 20th Anniv.

Strength:

Smooth, powerful, and quiet engine (had friends who praised it while riding in my car). Smooth breaks. Sound system. Fun to drive.

Weakness:

Exterior paint is prone to stone chips on the leading edge of the hood. Solution: Got "Super Black KH3" touch up paint from Nissan and use a after market bra.

I had driven my college car for too long. After college and getting a job, it was time to switch from a ''91 Eagle Summit hatchback. First wanted to get an Accord V6, but decided against it (too many of them on the road to ho-hum). Raised my car need up a level and debated between 2001 3.2TL or 2001 Maxima. Decided to go with Maxima because it had the following I was looking for: * V6 that has more than 200HP * 4 doors * manual trans. My local Nissan dealer had a 20th Anniv SE fully loaded (minus CD changer) in the show room (Black exterior and black leather interior). After I saw that car, I didn''t even bother test driving the 3.2 TL. I was originally wanting a GLE (auto), but decided to learn a manual - and did so without any problems. This is the first time I''m driving a stick-shift. Got very comfortable driving/shifting my Maxima in about 1 month. I had some practice before I got my Maxima, though, with help of friends who had stick-shift cars.

Strength:

Power, Power, Power. ABS Break system. Room. Fit & Finish. Very Cool dash Illumination. Gas mileage.

Weakness:

Very poor road feel for a car of this calibur. Did I say it is terrible in snow? There is way too much pizazz and a very touchy throttle along with the wide tires makes this a poor choice for a daily driver in upstate New York. I have actually gotten stuck on a 3 degree grade and thought I would have to get out and push while everyone else was driving by like I ran out of gas. There is a lot of noise transmitted from stone and dusty roads debri into the cockpit area, much more than the V6 Dodge Stratus that preceeded this. The seats are cloth and appear to be wearing out before our eyes. With 35,000 miles on the clock this should not be happening. We had to take it back to the dealer to have the transmission module replaced so it would shift correctly. When we got the car back it shifted fine but they gouged our console area installing it.It also developed a buzzing noise around 24,000 miles in the dash that I have been unable to find.

If you are looking for a 4 door sedan with some performance on a mild budjet than this could be the car for you. Forget the funky lights and look at all this car has to offer in its class. We shopped most of the competition till we drove this car and were sure that we would be very happy. Ours is a automatic SE. This car screems go from the moment you fire it up. We run only premium fuel and do very well on fuel economy. The appearance is spot on as is the fit and finish. I could not say enough good regarding the brakes as the 4 wheel disc really bring this package to a smooth stand still in a matter of seconds and the car hug''s the corners great. Want some fun - Buy one, want a mom & pop car - Buy a Camry.
