Strength:

Gas mileage

Weakness:

no power, pick up..etc

My wife had a 1993 Sentra, the base model "E". No options...etc. That car never had any problems, actually had some pick-up, and we were pretty satisfied. She then traded in the old sentra for a 1996 sentra. Bad Move!!! These are pieces of crap! I do not mean to offend anyone who actually likes the new model. I will say though that Nissan did not improve this car. We have had some unusual problems along with the very lackluster performance (this car couldn't get out of it's own way). DO NOT PASS GOING UP A HILL (unless the other car is broken down)!

For the money this car gets a value rating of a 3. Overall It gets a 2. If you are reading this review and looking for a Nissan, spend the extra$$$ and get an Altima.

Strength:

Fun to drive. Handles very well in snow. Great cornering. Good on gas mileage. Great acceleration for 1.6L engine.

Weakness:

Paint job could be better. Chips easily.

I haven't had any problems with my Sentra after 60,000+ miles. This is a great starter car for a single person or a small family. Very reliable.

Strength:

Many strengths!! This car feels so solid and well built for a car in this
class. Great fit and finish...nice clean lines, almost sexy. Extremely quiet engine at idle.. Great ergonomics with absolutely perfect stereo
placement. Nissan, you nailed that!! Nice tight, precise steering and great
handling with the larger 15" Bridgstone tires!. Also, very fun to drive.

Weakness:

Yes, there are some. The biggest is its very tight back seat, but im single
and dont plan on hauling many people in the back seat anyway. The stereo
buttons are way too tiny.

In my opinion, there is no better car in its class for the money, with
maybe the exception of the brand new 2001 Mazda Protege, but I dont care
for the styling of it...its a tad to "edgy" lookng for me. My Sentra GXE
is actually CHEAPER to insure that my 1998 Corolla!
One more thing, be sure to upgrade to the luxury package of the GXE. For
just 649.00 more you get 15" tires, alloy wheels, premium sound system with
7 speakers, security system, map lights.

Finally, if you are a practical person would believes in living within
your financial means. this car is ABSOLUTELY perfect!!!!

Strength:

"Sleeper" status, makes you say "Wheeeee!", bullet-proof reliability, good gas milage

Weakness:

Telling people "I have a Sentra....but it's a really cool one..really!" Due to light weight , it's not the best long range highway cruiser.

Great car, great value, fun to drive, reliable, the engine is capable of handling over 200hp with a turbo , so it's nearly impossible to break it.

1996 Ingegra LS ..despite both cars having 140HP , the SE-R has better off-the-line acceleration.

Strength:

EXCELLENT GAS MILEAGE EVEN WITH TODAYS GAS HIKE. VERY RELIABLE. MY CAR IS 9 YRS OLD AND STILL RUNNING WITH SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS JUST NOW WHICH I WILL EXPLAIN. DRIVES WELL,DECENT SIZE TRUNK.

Weakness:

MY DRIVER SIDE WINDOW AFTER 2 YEARS BECAME HARD TO ROLL UP. THEY REPLACED THE TRACK IN THE DOOR BUT THE SAME PROBLEM APPEARED AGAIN YEARS LATER. IF YOU PLAY CASSETTES ALOT LIKE I DID WHEN I BOUGHT IT, THE FACTORY RADIOS ARE JUNK. THEY COULD NOT FIX MY CASSETTE WHICH STOPPED PLAYING SO THEY REPLACED IT AND BY THE TIME MY WARRANTY WAS UP IT WAS ACTING UP AGAIN. I PURCHASED MY OWN RADIO JUST A YEAR AND A HALF AGO BECAUSE THE FACTORY SPEAKER ON MY DRIVER SIDE WENT. THE VENTILATION IS HORRIBLE. IF SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE TALKING IN THE CAR, IT FOGS UP QUICKLY AND I ALWAYS HAD TO TURN ON THE AIR TO DEFOG THE INSIDE MOST TIMES. MY AUTOMATIC SEAT BELTS WERE RECALLED BECAUSE THE MOTOR JAMMED AND PULLED ACROSS YOUR BODY TIGHT OUT OF THE BLUE. MY CRUISE CONTROL WENT AND THE WIND NOISE IS HORRIBLE. I FIND MYSELF CONSTANTLY TURNING MY SYSTEM UP WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS. THE CUP HOLDER SHOULD NOT BE IN FRONT OF THE PANEL. AT 140K MILES, I HAVE THREE OIL LEAKS, ONE FROM THE REAR MAIN ENGINE WHICH I DECIDED NOT TO FIX (EXPENSIVE AND NOT WORTH IT AT 9 YRS OLD). MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HANDLE DOES NOT MOVE INTO REVERSE WITHOUT PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON ANYMORE.

I WOULD STILL RECOMMEND THIS CAR AFTER SOME OF THE TROUBLE I'VE HAD. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR RELIABLILITY, THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT! I DID ALOT OF RESEARCH BEFORE THE PURCHASE AND THE HONDA AND TOYOTA WERE MY OTHER TWO CHOICES BUT I CHOSE THIS SENTRA. UNFORTUNATELY, I'VE READ SOME OF THE REVIEWS AND SOME THINGS STILL HAVEN'T CHANGED, SO DEPENDING ON WHAT NAGS YOU THE MOST, IT IS STILL A GREAT CAR. I AM MOVING ON TO ANOTHER TYPE OF CAR THIS YEAR, ONE OF THE OTHER TWO BUT ONLY BECAUSE I WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT. AS I RESEARCH,THE GAS MILEAGE (MY CAR TAKES $12 ON A HIGH GAS HIKE AND $8 ON LOW PRICES TO FILL IT)AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE SENTRA ARE TWO FEATURES I CONSTANTLY USE AS A COMPARISON.

Strength:

Extremely reliable. Great stereo system. Never had problems with the tape deck or the radio. Great gas mileage. Never had engine trouble, though I was always late for oil changes. Awesome power. I once raced a Chevy Impala and smoked the battery acid out of it. Suspension was nice and sturdy albeit all of the sharp turns and abuse that I put it through. AC was like a continuous freezer sneeze. Heater was like a sauna on steroids. Great performance in snow. NEVER got stuck, even when tires were worn out. Everybody loved it, friends, ladies, mom.

Weakness:

Clutch wire broke in the middle of a huge intersection. My ass almost got ran over by damn cement truck. But that was well after 110k. Paint chipped away easily giving way to gradual rust formations. Had a continuous electrical problem. For years could not figure out whether it was the starter, alternator or the battery getting drained for some arcane reason. For a few months, I actually had to pop up the hood and apply a screw driver to the starter and the connection screw to get a spark so to get it started. Changed the starter, battery, never had to change the alternator. Finally the problem was resolved by running a cheap cable directly from my starter to my ignition. Never had to pop up the hood again. Alas, I totalled it and got two grand from my insurance to get another car, big mistake, I should have just got them to fix it for me.

Overall, I loved the old Sentra. It truly kicked ass in every sense, except for the little electrical glitch that I mentioned earlier. But then again, I abused the hell out of it. Who knows. Want a reliable mid-size sedan for a good price and not sacrifice performance? Get a Sentra. If you're going for looks, you might wanna look into one of them new Grand Ams. But then again ya might wanna read the reviews first and plan on buying a gas station along with like a 10 year extended warranty. In other words, just get a Sentra. Make sure you get the 2.0L so you can stump on the Impalas.

After that I got a Pontiac Sunbird LE, '93 model. Again, big mistake. Sucks compared to the Nissan. I'd really love to say that American cars are awesome, and I'd love to just buy American, but let's be realistic here. NO VALUE, NO RELIABILITY, and just plain old SUCK. As a matter of fact, I think I'm gonna stop by the dealership near my house this afternoon and try to finance one of them 2001 SE models with the performance package. However, I think that the spoiler looks kinda gay.

Strength:

Power -- a real pocket rocket.
Handling
Looks (especially with aftermarket wheels -- more than one person has asked "Is that a Prelude?")
Reliability

Weakness:

Speedo cable tends to dry out and get noisy.
Hinges sag on driver side door. (chronic Sentra problem)
Headlights tend to crack and get moisture on inside, breaking halogen.
Fuel economy -- < 20 in town (although it would help if I kept my foot out of it)
A little noisy (I guess to save weight they took out most of the sound deadening; I added some to the metal floor of the trunk, it helped)
Fabric on seats does not clean up easily.
Windows tend to get rubber pinched in the tracks making them very difficult to roll up.
Front seats are too skinny for my big over-40 butt.
Can't open back windows.

The best car I've ever owned (and this goes back 28 years). The only thing that's ever gone wrong -- the fuel pump went out at about 70k -- was covered by a factory recall. Super performance from the sr20de motor. Great handling, even on the standard size 195-60R14 tires (these do very well with 15 or 16" wheels, but the ride suffers and I'm getting too old for this). Super disc brakes on all 4 wheels. The shifter (to quote Car & Driver) operates "as if on divine guidance." I'm on the original clutch after 130K and it still grabs like a mother. Great head-turning looks, especially from those in the know. I intend to keep this gem until the wheels fall off, but at the rate things are going I'm not likely to outlive it. :)

I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 1996. NOW, IN JUNE, 2001, I HAVE 210,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR STILL RUNS STRONG. REGULAR MAINTENANCE DESCRIBED BY NISSAN MUST BE FOLLOWED. IF SO, THEN, AS YOU CAN SEE, IT RUNS WELL, WELL OVER 200,000 MILES AND SITLL GOING STRONG. EXCEPTIONAL RELIABILITY.
