Model Reviewed: Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Sl Coupe

Strength:

This car was built on an excellent, proven platform by the finest group of assembly and design personnel that General Motors employs. The car has a very nice ride. It is also very predictable, smooth and has great power in virtually all driving applications. after four years and 170k miles it is still a very reliable vehicle that has required virtually no repair other than an alternator and battery around 70000 miles the electronics in this vehicle as well as the engine and drivetrain are second to none. And I am not what you would call a mild driver.

Weakness:

This vehicle could benefit from improve fuel efficiency as well as more trunk space

The Cutlass Supreme in it's final years of production was and still is an excellent vehicle I could not Imagine after four years of owning this vehicle of wanting a different vehicle

Strength:

Ease of driving. Controls are easily accesible. Good for large people (I'm 6'4" and have no problems getting in and out, and there is plenty of room in the back seat). HUGE trunk. Even the middle-sized 2.8L V6 gives this thing plenty of go, I've done over 120 mph with the car fully loaded. Parts are generally easy to find, as there are about six manufacturers of this vehicle type. Many places to put things (consoles, compartments in the glove box and rear window).

Weakness:

Easy to speed in. I have been pulled over many times. Cramped engine compartment makes home-repairs difficult. Turning radius could be a *bit* better, but is acceptable. Ignition Key rack can snap on the tilt-steering will models, and is very expensive in labor costs to replace ($200 labor charge on a $10 part, I use a screwdriver myself, it starts just fine).

I've had my Cutlass for about four years now, and it has been a very good car to me. A few minor cosmetic problems (hey, that paint is not meant to last fourteen years) such as the leather seats being worn out, and a few of the control buttons being unreadable after so many years are somewhat to be expected. Also, don't let your passengers yank on the door handle, or they can break the bar inside the door, as has happened to a couple of other similar cars that I have seen. Very easy to drive, even for long trips, I've gone about half way across the country in this thing a couple of times now, and made two and a half hours drives for quite a while. I would also have to say that the car is quite reliable. The alternator went out about a month after I bought it, but it was the origional, and not terribly expensive to replace. Seeing as I have just passed 190,000 miles the previous week, I've been very, very happy with my car. It puts up with quite a bit of abuse driving, including high-speed cornering, driving in and around Atlanta a couple of times, dirt roads at 30mph, and water up to the undercarriage with no problems. Unfortunantly, the engine is crammed in a rather tight area, and can be quite difficult to get to at times, even for what should be simple repairs. Also, the side-mounted battery terminals making giving someone a jump-start a rather sizeable pain. All in all, this is a very nice car, as long as it is properly maintained. I would highly recommend one myself, and wish the series had not been discontinued.

Model Reviewed: Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 2.5 4-cyl.

Strength:

This car is a very good size so you have plenty of protection in an accident. The controls are well layed out. This car can fit a lot of people. The car is fairly easy to work on.

Weakness:

The 2.5 4-cylinder is rather loud and sluggish. The standard instrument panel should include a temperature guage to keep an eye on. These types of cars always have the inside door handle break off.

I have had this car for about 3 months and so far I only got to drive it for about a week before it died. I didn't have much time till recently when I replaced the radiator, hood cable, spark plugs & wires, distributor, and now I have to replace the cylinder head. Whoever had this car did not take care of it. Hopefully I can solve the problems.

Strength:

Good looking inside and out. Plenty of power in the 3.1 v6 to please most anyone. Good gas mileage for a v6.

Weakness:

Unusual and costly engine repair for being well maintained (practically pampered like a baby)at such low mileage but believe sometimes odd occurences do happen. I think the problems are behind me and it should last quite a while. Would have like to had anther cup holder on passenger side like the one on the drivers side, and I really dont care for the ashtray location and that it only has one.

I have mixed feelings about this car, ran great when I first bought it, but between 40k and 50k has cost a great deal of money in engine repair, which was rather unusual for such low mileage and being well maintained. I still need a few more repairs to motor but for now it runs. I like the the exterior and interior I will say GM did a great job on that. As long as I dont have any more unusual problems I plan to keep the car for quite a while.I now have 55k and hope to still for several years more.

Overall, good car! Nice speed, ok pickup, roomy interior, big tunk, ect. I enjoy it and hope it lasts much longer.

Weakness:

Constant need for repairs isn't good. Parts are kinda expensive, but what car doesn't have expensive parts. Hate the digital dash going out (replaced mine twice). I don't like the hood rusting in the front middle (have seen others with same problem).

Have had car nearly 2 years. Bought it with 114,000 miles on it. Probably got ripped off, but ooh-well. Expensive repairs (have spent ~$2000 on misc. repairs). I have learned to go to junkyards for parts and how to let people I know help to fix it (my uncle is a mechanic). I like the car. It is great besides the seemingly constant need for some little repair. The digital dash and the rack & pinion needs replacing (I think that's the problem). Nice car!!!

Cornering Comfort Interior looks great Air Conditioning never serviced in 12 years!

Weakness:

Not a real muscle car - midrange power is not what I was expecting. Car rolls a bit more on corners than I like but it holds on great Oddball wheel size - 14" sport wheels - what were they thinking when they didn't put 15" wheels on a sport model?

Bought it from Mom in 1994. Have over 300,000 km (more than 200,00 mi) and it's still a good car. This car had most options since it was the FE3 (sport model with 3.3 L engine, floor shift, gauge package and computer display driver information system etc). The interior is roomy and comfortable with good support for your back. Power is good and it corners like anything but my mom found the steering very heavy due to the 60-series tires. Gas mileage is great on the highway and decent in the city. Found that it had good take-off power but kind of weak in the mid-speed (65-100 km/h or 40-60 mph) unless you really punch it down and force the hard downshift. Have had no major repairs just the usual rad/alternator and that sort of thing that you get with age. The car is getting a little wheezy so I don't try to race anyone anywhere anymore. The wheels are now an oddball size - 205/60/R14 and there is not much selection in tires lately. Thinking of giving to my kids and picking up a 1996 or 97 Cutlass Supreme which you can buy at a good price now.

Strength:

Rides Handles great, mine has the FE-3 pakage with wide Al wheels and better susspension. Its got a lot of traction in all wether conditions. My brother wrecked it, it totaled a HONDA and i drove mine home. it is a very strong and reliable car. Like all GM products it has a great AC unit and the best heater. Looks great with tinted windows.

Weakness:

Like all GM products the altinater will go about every 60K-90K miles. It just started to leak a little oil at the distribitor shaft. Due to the car being 13 years old I had to replae the engine mounts. Mine only has a 3 speed automatic so it only gets 19 MPG around town. Mine also dosen't have anti lock disc brakes.

Over all I have been very pleased with this car. This is my first car, I have owned it going on 3 years now. With the 4dr 2.8 V6 MPI it can out run a 2002 Mustang V6 up to 60 mph. HA! HA! HA! One point for the Granny Car! I have been very pleased with it. I have only 94K miles. This is one hell of a olds. I replaced the whole stereo system and added 2 12" subs, 4 6x9's, 2 mtx tweters, and 2 amplifiers with a combined wattage of 960 watts!!! I also tinted the windows. It's FOR SALE make offer.
