Strength:

Great motor. 4-wheel disk brakes stop you on a dime. A relatevily light weight. Turbo runs at 15psi(if the censor is right). Nice seats don't let you slide. All power options (on my model). Price is unbetable. The best bang for the buck in the import/compact market.

Weakness:

1.High center of gravity. It is common on old cars, all it takes is a set of stiffer springs, maybe shocks.
2.A turbo lag. It's sort of fun, you pick a spot in traffic, aim the car, floor the padal, and wait for the boost to kick in. Reminds me of "Back to the Future" for some reason.
3. Back seats, of course. They are practically useless, don't even try to fit back there, let alone ride.
4. Looks. It's a matter of taste but mine has 140k on the odometer and paint is starting to peel, roof is sagging down and the front bumper is actually bent from years of abuse. Not that I don't like it, but "Damn, that car must be fast!" is the last thing that flashes through your head when you look at it.

Well, what's not to like? I bought it for $900 from the state auction and had to spent about $1,200 to get it inspected. That price included all new engine seals, brake pads, radiator, head gasket and a CV joint. That was expected since car already had 140,000 miles and, judging by the college stickers on the window, a careless owner. It runs great, scary perhabs, but that's because I never owned a turbo car. Give me a few months to get used to it, and local racetrack we go.
The 4G63 Mitsubishi motor really does puts out, it's the same as they have in the rally-winning Lancer series. Turbo was rebuilt by the previous owner and now runs at steady 15psi of boost, which is actually that same turbo that tuners now put on Civics, Integras and various Volkswagens. Only they run it at 12psi, no more.
What so great about this car is that nobody seem to take it seriously. There is nothing more satisfying than the look on the small block Camaro owner's face after you flash you'r brake lights in his face. The big plus is also the aftermarket support, which is not as diverse as the H-car's, but offers a healthy number of performance bolt-ons. In a months I'll be installing a downpipe, exaust, intake, manual boost controler, in-tank racing fuel pump and bunch of little things like spark plugs etc. All estimated under $2,000 (+labor) by a local performance shop. And the payoff? An estimated mid 13's on that same 15psi of boost. Stay tuned for more updates on the "Vette killer" project. The best acceleration of any car that I've ever driven before. That ranges from the '97 Mustang GT to the '99 Firebird. It has a slick look too it, but not the Camaro-slickness to it which, honestly in my opinion, is a good thing. Too many teenie-boppers drive the camaro's and firebird's which give it that "teen machine" look. But not this car.
To this day, I still have no idea what the previous owner did to it (or if he even did anything to it at all, which would be great!) but when I tested the car in 0-60 on an open, flat, and leveled back road, my friend clocked me at 5.6, yes folks, 5.6 seconds... The second test clocked at 5.8 and the third at 5.7. That's only about .3 of a second slower than a 2000 SS Camaro. Believe it or not, I don't care! I was pretty darn impressed. I bought car in a heartbeat.
And the best thing is, this car has never let me down. Never any engine problems and the turbo functions like it's still brand new.
Oh yeah and GREAT gas mileage, I can't stress that enough.

Weakness:

As everyone has already pointed out, yes the backseats are WAAAYyyy small... Maybe even to the point where they're a little embarrassing. Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

I love this car! Gas mileage, speed, and looks all make this car great, especially if you're single.

When I bought the car it was a piece of crap. I had totalled my last Laser an this was the most affordable one I could find in California that ran well. Since I have had the car I have put in a $6000 Stereo system. The ergonomics in the front is amazing. The acceleration and handling is amazing. The only car I have seen that corners better than mine is my friends Porsche 914 thats been heavily modified. I can keep up with almost every V-6 on the road if not take them, with no turbo. Since I have put on 17" with ZR rated tires I easily take every corner at double the speed limit. Overall, my baby has recieved in the last year a $1000 silver and black paint job, 17" rims, an Alpine deck, 2 alpine amps, MTX sub, Boston proseries speakers, fog lights, personalized licence plates, Clifford Alarm, cell phone kit, voltometer, water pressure guage, and a alpine cd changer. This car is one the best I have ever driven. If you get a DSM (Laser, Eclipse, Talon), its worth investing in, I'm putting in another $42,000 into mine.

Weakness:

Back seats are to small, they only fit kids. And the passenger has nothing to look at or control, everthing is for the driver. Rear side styling at the rear windows. Wheel well to big in the front.

This is one car youf have to drive, as long as it's not the 1.8 litre engine. It's a good reliable car, and it can be very fast and handle exceptionally. For more information log onto www.ba.dsm.org

Ok! I think that this is a perfect first car.I am fifteen years old and I bought my Laser at age fourteen. My car is a standard 5spd and the acceleration is perfect. The speedometer says 145mph and I believe that it can go that fast, if I wanted to go that fast! My dad does most of the repairs on it,he does a super job.

Weakness:

the only thing that i do not like about the laser is the rear seating room only kids could fit back there. but i love everything else

When I bought my Laser someone had hit it. It has been in a car accident. The drivers side front was all smashed in and I replaced everything on it and now I want to buy ground effects,a spoiler, and a new paint job in the soon future. If anyone is looking for great parts at a cheap price, I used astro.I bought my car at a used car dealer I think that it is a great teens first car!I mean it is sporty and the laser, talon, and eclipse was the same in the years 90-94 and i do not understand why they stopped making the laser

It's Sleek, fast, easily customized. It is perfect for a sound system, custom kick panels, room for subs, standard size for cd player, 6x6s in back, room to hook up amps and eqs and everything. This car is meant to turn heads. Manual, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

No room in the back seat, but this car is mean for you and a friend to drive around town.

This car is the best

Strength:

Incredible acceleration. Smooth handling. Great on sharp turns.
Has the semi-slick look to it. I've actually burned my friend's
2000 Z28 camaro in a one on one race. EXCELLENT gas mileage.

Weakness:

Not the best pick up. A little tiny. Even though the acceleration
is incredible, it's only because modifications were done to it by the
previous owner.

I personally love this car. I've driven a 1982 5.0 Mustang LX,
1997 Mustang Cobra, and a 2000 Z28 Camaro and literally none have
compared to the speed and acceleration of this car. Yes it does have
it's follies. Engine problems, only comes in 5-speed, and yes, some
may even consider it an "ugly" car (i sure don't).
But compared to the other sports cars, this car surprisingly satisfied
me way more than the others.
I bought it for $3500 and it has NEVER broken down on me at any critical times. Overall: It's a GREAT car! Mustang GT's, Cobras, and Camaro Z28's all stand below my car! The only car I have raced that my 1990 Laser has ever lost to is a 2000 SS Camaro. And that was by a few miliseconds.

i dont like the looks i like the 92 eclipses and talons looks much better!

well the laser will run circles over a ferrari or a porsche anyday since i put four turbos and a jackson supercharger in this baby and the fact that it is normally aspirated makes it soo cool it runs about 11 psi. i also had a cool paint job witch includes a red to brown to silver to black fade and the car glows in the dark at night i also have a sweet radio shack head unit that pumps out an amazing 7.5 watts rms x 2 its unbelievable my friend joe wise reccomended it to me along with radioshack pro series subs which are easily powered by this astonishing head unit ..thanks joe oh and one more comment my head unit has an electric shocking security system since i invested over 20 bucks in my whole audio system
