Roomy, cool style, fun, its pretty much just a great car to me! I like it alot except that it almost killed me and some other people

Weakness:

brakes suck and the back hatch always gets stuck

I have never had any serious problems with my car except sometimes when i would be driving through a parking lot it would completly shut off for some reason, but everytime it happend i was goin really slow and nothing serious happend. BUT this weekend my car shut off, my brakes went out, and my wheel locked up as i was goin around a curve in the mountains. Make a long story short i ended up driving into on coming traffic and hit a motorcycle head on...everyone is fine though miraculously!

love the way it looks, plenty of room inside, wouldnt think it from the outside. Seems so far to be doing good except for the wheel bearings.

Weakness:

Wheel bearings and something badly wrong in the back end making it move all crazy on the road when drive over bumps. When I find the answer to that, I let you all know.

I just got mine at the end of march of this year, and all ready the front wheel bearing has had to be replaced and I just took it back today and found out that now the back right one needs replaced and a pump. I dont really guess I have any brake problems, not yet but I'm trying to find out why the back end of my Aztec goes crazy when I drive over a bump on the highway. It's like the whole back end fishtails. The thing is every where. One mechanic test drove it today and said it drove fine, I told him no, that there is something wrong with it. I have been hearing some bad things about these Aztec. I hope it gets better and not worse. I really do like my car. But from reading you all's reviews, there does seem to be a very big problem with the wheel bearings.

Strength:

It is sporty, with room for to large puppies. Rides nicely on interstate. Mileage is good. Nice head room for tall people.

Weakness:

Veiw is horrible, esepecially from rear
Wheel bearings replaced for the 6th time. Rear hatch works only when outside temp is above 60--below that you have to have keyless remote inmotion and left hatch at same time. Roll back and forwards when on hills after putting in park. Very hard to park within lines. Doesn't steer well in high winds.

We purchased a 2003 Aztec, 2/2003 and added the extened warranty (Glad I did). I really don't know where to begin as it has been in the shop consistently every 2 months. Service light constantly comes on, even same day as serviced. Gear shift sticks and have to turn engine back off and restart engine to get in gear. Dealer states this has been a problem, but no one seems to know why or how to resolve it, lost count of services for this reason alone. It is now back in the shop for 2 days to have wheel bearing replaced for the 6th or 7th time (had to switch to different dealership in the beginning, becasue I was told it was just the type of tires that casue the roar!!!HA!!!!) This has caused us to have to replace tires (all 4) three times since purchase (Tires with 45000 mile warranties, but because GM has problems with bearing and such our tire warranty doesn't always cover the cost) Air conditioning Defroster blower/fan is being replaced for the third time. Head gaskets replaced a third time, Radio/ CD being replaced because cds get stuck and have ever since we purchased the thing. As mentioned we have the extended warranty, which entitles us to a rental vehicle (Im 6'6" and they give me a sunfire to drive--had to refuse and they had nothing else) So now I am out $150.00 for a 2-day rental while repairs are completed. The first year owning the car we traveled in it. As of 2005, when we going out of town 100+ more miles--we rent a vehicle out of fear of having to make repairs. This vehicle is serviced to the max and I have let nothing slip, but the problems keep growing. We still have 2 years left on GMAC loan and not sure what we are going to do. Rear Hatch does not work under 60 degree temps--have had it in the shop upteen times and am told this is a problem and there is no solution to the problem. Gear Shift lights went out and it took 3 trips to 2 different dealerships to get this resolved. When we go to park, car lunges forward as if not in park, and same thing if parked on an incline. Plastic panel trim on back passenger door has had to be replaced (it fell of). Remote key enter only work approximately 10 ft from car. Have gotten locked in car before and restarted car twice before locks would release. The plastic molding inside the car around doors and floor are loose and this has been repeatedly fixed. We will never buy anything like this again. As you see, they are no longer made and have been replaced with the torrant. Brakes squeak all the time. We are looking to find others who have the same issues to get enough complaints to consider class action, due to the limited lemon laws in the diffent states. At this point our next car will not be a GM even with employee incentive, I won't buy another because of the cheap look interior and all the problems. WE have now been offered a second extented bumper to bumper warranted for another two years--and am in the decision process as wo spend the 1900.00 or cut our lost and get a new vehicle, unfortunalely the balance will transfer over to that loan if we trade it in.

Too many to list

Nothing but problems. Leased the vehicle brand new and yeah, head gaskets replaced, problems with brakes, rocker arms replaced. It seems like it spends more time in the shop than in my driveway. In fact, it is in for service again today. My biggest issue with this piece of crap is that the ABS brakes keep coming on for no apparent reason. It happens to the mechanics, shop foreman and lay person. No one can figure out why or how to fix it. I am so frustrated with this car!! I have only bought new GM vehicles for the last 10 years, but this will be my last. The lease is up next summer and they can have the hunk of junk. I would love to hear if any others are having issues with the ABS.

Weakness:

Costly repairs so early. And the back latch locking so quickly.

I actually love the car. I have a lot of dogs and kids and make trips of about 20,ooo miles per year and it is very spacious. I also have been having trouble. I have 39,000 miles on it and am just going to pick it up from the shop ~ you guessed it front wheel bearing and intake gasket. I had it repaired at no cost to me and after reading everyone else's reviews I wonder if I will be replacing the other 3 hubs as well

Love the design, clients love the room, rare interior space. I actually sit in my back seat occasionally because it is so comfortable, for it not to be a huge SUV the leg room is really suprising. When everything is working right, the cabin noise is very minimal. People say it rides like a caddy (just not on a windy day). I feel like the design is futuristic & timeless and had hoped to drive the thing until it blows up (may be sooner than later). I have the All black model/gray multi cloth interior. The newer ones are a lot sleeker and don't have that plastic trim. I think that changed everything for me. In addition, I have silver lettering on 2 side triangle windows and the rear flat trunk panel. People have to look at me!! They can't turn away. Love the removable seats, plenty of room for my real estate signs. I have gotten a couch in there. Saved money on moving trucks. Like the tint. My 8 yr old son loves to sit up high. It is a very comfortable vehicle to drive. Interior is very easy to keep clean.

Weakness:

Brake life & related items, Trunk, Gas Mileage, Stability in windy conditions

Ok after visiting this site, I will be making a date with my Pontiac dealer. I am with the suggestion on a class action. My mom keeps telling me to just let the car get repossessed. I owe more than its worth because of the mileage I put on it. People are sick of me crying about the damn thing. I bought this vehicle brand spanking new. I was considering a Red Vibe w/leather interior at first. Now, that I am dealing with the gas mileage (I doubt I am getting over 15mpg) I wish I had chosen the Vibe. I have been crabbing at Firestone because I just replaced the caliphers/rotors/pads/tires in August 2005, heard noises in October and was told to ignore it insisted they check the brakes-- it was the hub assembly (warranty covered). The brakes never stop squeaking if they do it is only when it is raining or just a week here and there. I am in sales and cannot drive this vehicle without being embarrassed. I bought the car because I wanted to be different not because I want heads to turn when they hear me screeching down the street. The brakes started driving me crazy again so in February I take it back to shop, guess what caliphers/rotors again! Warranty said no go again. Was able to get one calipher refunded by NAPA. Get the car out of the shop, squeaking again! Now a little squeak here and there ok, but I am talking about squeaking from the moment you hit the brake until you come to a complete stop. Occasionally there is a little grind at the end. Also, some bolt cam off the muffler at some point when it was at the shop so also sounds like a Chevy P/U now. Just last week I contacted Firestone Corporate blaming them. They paid for a rental, fiddled around with the car by resurfacing front rotors & rear drums cleaned and adjusted brakes at no charge. One day later--squeaking again. Each time it comes out of the shop it sounds worse than when it went in. I am at 71xxx miles. I have a warranty thru 75,xxx but they usually only covered about 70% of the problems anyway. I will have to check back in my records but shortly after I bought it I took it in because of the a/c not blowing cold on settings 1 & 2 I believe it was compressor. Also, around 6 months after having (probably around 13k miles) there was a brake issue that was covered under warranty, I remember being so scared to take it in thinking how am I going to pay for this so soon after buying this car? I just did not think they would cover brakes. It was my client that told me give it a shot. Have the issue with the trunk but just thought it was a design flaw and that the darn thing was too heavy. None of my cigarette lighters work in the front of the vehicle only the rear, which proved to be a pain in the you know what when I needed to air up a front flat tire. The shakiness in windy conditions is like nothing I have seen before. I usually am reciting some prayer when this happens. I used to work at a Enterprise Rent a Car so I have driven countless vehicles and recognize many service issues. Even if the problems were normal or in line with this type of vehicle, the time and money that I waste on it being in the shop have begun to outweigh the positives. Definitely want to have a 2nd car in the household with this one. Sometimes I get in the rental and don't even want to go back to the shop to get it.

Test drove the Vibe and loved it but for same price felt Aztec was a better value (gas prices were reasonable then!) Traded in 2000 Pontiac Grand Am for this--Huge mistake--Never had a single problem with Grand Am owned from Early 2001 to 5/2003 just got worried because it was going to be out of warranty and had previous costly issues with a 1991 Subaru Legacy also loved. Legacy ran hot repeatedly ended up having a blown head gasket which mechanic failed to diagnos but proceeded to replace brakes, pads, rotors, etc. Took him to court. I have been scared to death of repair shops and car problems ever since. I have driven pretty much every vehicle seen on a rental car lot from Fall 2000-Fall 2002 models.

I purchased my 2003 Aztec brand new off the lot. I took it in for service becore we went on vacation in June this year. I asked them to check out absolutely everything as this was a 14 hour road trip with a 2 & 4 yr old. We did not want to get stuck with them in the car. At that time the car was under warranty. Of course, they did not find any problems. Now the problems start. I was in the drive through and my hot coolant light came on. I babied it to get it home. My uncle is a mechanic. I called him and had him take a look. The overflow was completely empty! We ended up replacing the radiator cap as the fluid was leaking from there. Over the next few days, I was keeping an eye on the amount of fluid it was using. I had to call my uncle again as I had to keep adding fluid. (which is not cheap by the way) I took it to his shop this time. One of his co-workers asked how many miles I had on it. I told him 41,700. He just shook his head yes. My uncle told me that his co-worker advised him how many miles I would have and where the leak was before he even saw the car. Sure enough the co-worker was right. It is leaking by the intake. It is in a spot that you have to take a lot out to get to the intake. Just to get another opinion, I checked with a mechanic that I did not know. I walked in and told them that we replaced the radiatior cap and that it is still using fluid. I told them that we had drained, pumped up and burped the radiator. They asked how many miles and I advised them. They all said intake, this is without even LOOKING at the car. Then they checked to see if they were right, and of course they were. I then took it to the dealer that I purchased it from and told them about the problem. The service manager offered to cover most of it under warranty, but I would still have to pay approximately $200.00 our of pocket. I know when it comes to repairs, that amount is NOTHING really. However, I feel that this is a recall issue. The mechanics that I spoke with even said that. They said the motor is fine in a car or minivan but something is not right with it when they put the 3400 (which is what I have) and th 3100 in SUVs. Not just Aztec but all SUVS that they have seen with this motor have this problem around the same amount of miles. I am VERY upset.

Hello I just purchased an Aztec. I heavily researched it prior to purchase. The complaints on all the reviews I have read on this site are mostly from 2001-2002 model years. My father in law is a GM mechanic he has always said do not buy a vehichle the first few years it is out obviously he is right. He rarely has worked on the 2003-2005 models he states. He would have not let me purchase this vehichle if he had. I love it, the space and all the extras that it comes equipped with are wonderful not to mention the price. My husband does say it is the ugliest thing on the car lot but he'll get used to it I'm sure. I used to think they were ugly too. My 4 year old loves it and so do I, if i do have problems I will state them on this site but for now It's the best thing I have ever gotten.

Engine should have a bit more power. For a vehicle this size and shape, 180HP is not really enough. Should have used the 3800. Heater fan is a bit weak. Hig his only a breeze.

This a great suv. It may be listed as a car but really. I have never seen a tall car. I have never had problems with it and I bought mine used. These issues others have I think may be caused by driving habits.

Lots really. The car handles great, get's halfway decent gas mileage, decent acceleration, TONS of room for the size, all in all it's just a fun car.

Weakness:

see summary

I've owned my Aztec for nearly 6 months now and I have 28000 miles on it. I had been pretty psyched about the car and it's functionality. However, today I spent $300 replacing brake pads and rotors. This struck me as odd. The repair shop told me they had been noticing that the aztecs were frying pads and rotors very quickly. Sucks for me, those aren't covered under warranty. The rear hatch is quirky. Now that weather has warmed, it seems to be working as intended - but the darn 3 second safety-lock delay is the most ridiculous idea ever conceived. I've gotton some strange looks running from the switch to the hatch in the parking lot when I don't have the remote in hand. AWD is mostly great. However, if you manage to spin the wheels with the engine cold, the AWD will cut out to prevent overheating. Not sure how it could be overheating since I've only had it in drive for 8 seconds and it's 16 below zero... but whatever. Other imperfections... the gas cap just doesn't really seem to seal the tank... in order lift the wiper blades you need to turn them on and cut power with them in mid motion... the rear window collects snow faster than the rear defrost can melt it... blind spots are everywhere - but I knew that when I bought it...
