Strength:

The way this car handles is wondrful. Smooth ride.

Weakness:

Leather seats are cracking and peeling away from the lining. V6 engine overheated this year (2000) and I was told it was the radiator and that it should be replaced. I replaced the radiator and now I am told 4 months later that I have blown a head gasket. Has anyone complained about the engines on the early 93's. The engines were recalled by Toyota so I have been told, but I can find no evidence of this. I purchased mine in 1992 November and I was told it was a 1993. Are the engines the same as the 92's V6's - they were recalled for faulty gaskets. Now am I going to be told the head on the engine is cracked? What next in this ever ending saga of maintenece on your Toyota? I thought Toyota stood behind its product! I tried calling the Torrance office and NO ONE would talk to me about this.
What are they hiding???? I was considering buying another, however, with this experience I think I am tempted to shop elsewhere.

If you want to pay a lot of money for maintenece and upkeep, buy this car.
Maybe the newer models will have less problems.

Strength:

I have had no unplanned maintenance done on this car.
Gas mileage is in the upper 30's on the highway.

Weakness:

Handling is a little weak on corners, my dark paint scratches easily, and it could have better ground clearance.

I bought my Camry used in '95. I've put 100,000 miles on it since and have had NO problems with it. I wish it had a bit more power but the gas mileage makes up for that. Mine has a two-tone paint job and I've never seen another one just like it. I love this car! Don't know what I'm going to do when I have to replace it.

Comfortable seating position. Excellent road manners. Attractive styling. Great heat! I can put full size adults in the back seat!

Weakness:

NOthing. Not a single thing.

I HAD been driving a Ford Tempo, when I found this car. I will NEVER go back! Everything about this car is a HUGE step up. It's looks, its's handling, the gas mileage. I would recommend this car to any and everyone! I love the Ride, the style, the size!! At almost four years old, still attractivly styled.

Strength:

It's the number one rated car in America, but that doesn't say very much since Milli Vanilli's album was also the number one rated record in America for a while. Somewhat attractive styling.

Weakness:

Sorry vernster from LA, but your comment sounded like a Toyota advertisement. The Camry is easily the most overrated car in America, and the only reason so many people buy it is because of its reputation. Japanese cars have gone up in price due to the dollar/yen ratio, but that doesn't explain why just about any Nissan dealer on the planet will negotiate on the price of a Maxima (a much better car than the Camry) while most Toyota dealers will not negotiate on a Camry. Toyota's ballyhooed reputation for reliability is in fact no better than Nissan's or Honda's. When they do break down, better grab your wallet or checkbook. A repair job on a Camry will almost always cost more than the similar work done by a Nissan dealer to a Maxima or a Honda dealer to an Accord. The Camry is also boring and has no personality, unlike the Maxima, Accord, or even the Mitsubishi Gallant.

There are two types of drivers in the world-those who love to drive and are passionate about cars, and those who only see a car as a means of getting from point A to point B. Folks in the second category primarily drive Camrys and Caravans.

Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Gallant, Nissan Maxima-all of which cost less to purchase, are just as reliable, and have some degree of panache. Ford Taurus, which isn't as reliable but at least costs less and is cheaper to fix.

Strength:

Smooth acceleration, good sound system.

Weakness:

Front struts have "crunch-rumble" that can't be fixed.
Toyota doesn't replace car or refund money without a court order.

Stay away from the V-6 Toyota's. The service people told me that
there was a fundamental engineering defect with the front struts that they couldn't fix. Despite this, they wouldn't take the car back under any circumstances. Buyer Beware! Toyota claims that "your satisfaction is our first priority" - I was completely disatisfied and I can guarantee you that they couldn't care less.

Strength:

Drives reasonably well. Plenty of room in front and back. Good gas mileage. Comfortable even on long trips.

Weakness:

Don't be fooled by Toyota quality or service. Bought the Camry specifically for a car that would need only basic maintenance, I don't have time to read magizines in a garage!
First, the breaks have stayed in good condition, but the emergency brake does not work and never has. Also you have the pesky problem that the brakes sometimes do not take even on dry surfaces. Nothing like haveing to let off and re-step on breaks in heavy traffic.
The 4cyl engine is excessively week and roars when getting out into traffic(Compared to my mom's Nissan Sentra!). Get a v6 but be prepaired to pay. The timeing belt failed after 40k. Have had FOUR sets of tires on this thing. I know I drive a bit rough at times, but come on that is why I by higher quality tires! After the second set, I had a non-Toyota specialist check out the situation and found that the wheel mounts and assembly were improperly installed and of poor quality. This meant that I would need constant reallignment or fix for about $2500. Toyota, when confronted, agreed with assessment but would not fix it (With the warrenty in effect - I had not gotten my oil changed at their facility!)
Car constantly bottoms out on any incline (pulling into the driveway)
Paint easily chips and is fading but not uniformly.
Interior quality mediocre. The dask seals worked their way out over time. The back seat failed and splotched. Looks like someone spilt something, when I know no one has.
Audio system very week.
As far as service from the dealer, forget it because they will forget you. I have been to FIVE different Toyota Dealers and all were the same, will try not to honor warrenty and claim nothing is wrong even when the car has obvous problems. Now get local Nissan place to do work, no problems.
I could go on, but why be petty.

Would not recommend Toyota Camry of any year. Rented a 2000 and it had obvious quality issues. Toyota may have been king of quality and reliability once, but complacency is starting to take over. Remind anyone of the US 'Big Three' from the 80's. If you go Toyota, be wary and do not rely on their history to insure quality.

Strength:

Safe, good power, quiet, except the General tires are a bit noisy. Great ABS and handling is very good.

Dealer was very nice.

Weakness:

Fit and finish not as good as our 1985 we got rid of. Some rattles, missfitting interior parts. Rear bumper a different shade of paint than body. Have noticed this on a few others. Ours was built in USA. Maybe the Japanese built ones aren't as shoddy. I don't rememeber others we test drove being this way.
In '85, and LE was really an LE. I miss the electronic dash, door handles that light the interior when you pull up on them from the locked outside, keyholes that light up, independent reading lights for both passenger and driver and other little things.

While I would recommend this car highly because it is a well engineered car, it lacks the fit and finish of our '85 LE that we got rid of. At times I wish we hadn't and spent a few bucks to get it fixed. We had over 160K and not a rattle or squeek. Door and window seals needed replacement as it had a lot of road noise, and needed a valve job. At $2400 we gave it away.

Model Reviewed: Camry LE

Strength:

Quiet, reliable, well built for the most part, feels safe, handles predictably

Weakness:

Poor rear drum breaks and rear suspension, nose divig, paint enamel scratches easily. No wagon version =:(((

I’ve had the 4 cylinder 2000 Camry LE for almost a year now. 14,000 miles on it already. It is very quiet and handles nicely if one observes the speed limit. Almost no road noise or engine noise at moderate acceleration (below 3,000 rpm). It is not as dynamic as I would like it to be, but the fuel economy is as stated on the sticker. And it has no problems maintaining highway speeds and merging heavy traffic. My fuel efficiency is between 24 (morning heavy traffic) and 31 miles on the gallon (highway). Feels safe enough and breaks securely with the ABS. Afterall it is a family car and it behaves like a good one that does not cost a fortune (Volvo and Audy and BMW and Mercedes wagons would be my choice but I say to myself that they are gazz-guzzlers and this cures my grief...).

Complaints:
- Nose diving is very strong when breaking. Nissans (Altima and the older Stanza I had have none of it. Sideway roll it is relatively good though (on turns).
- Rear suspension is not good enough, although this might be due to the cheap Firestones it comes with standard. On bumpy roads while turning fast the rear suspension makes knocking noises and the car is not very stable – tends to skid (due to the soft rear struts)
- Rear drum breaks are not good. When breaking at high speeds (anything above 50 miles per hour) for more than a couple of seconds, the rear wheels start making noises that are indicative of unbalanced drums/wheels. It did this from the moment I tried it at higher speeds after about a 1,000 miles break-in at below 50 mph. The tires were rotated and balanced recently and it still does this. The Stanza I owned did not exhibit this until it’s 10th birthday and it was fixed after turning the drums... I would recommend getting the rear discs as an option– it will break much nicer.
- Paint is weak – scratches easily, especially under the door handles where it already has marks as if my fingernails were made of hardened steel...
- Rear seat opening to the trunk is small and the seats do not lay flat when folded. But on the Nissan Maxima it is even smaller... The best ones are in VW Jettas – wide and useful opening and a decent trunk for the car size.
- Rear speakers suck and to replace them it is a pain in the neck – have to take apart half the car, not just remove a cover as should be the case. To take off the rear board under which the speakers are mounted, one has to take off the side decorative panels, but to do so one has to unscrew the sides of the rear seats and put everything back together...But sound is much nicer now even from the so-so stock radio =:)

Strengths:
- Quiet
- Fuel efficient (of course only compared to the US standards and to similar size vehicles here)
- Nice size interior both front and back (I’m 6’4” and I can stretch my left leg completely while driving , and there is still enough room behind me for a small person to fit OK)
- Ergonomic controls that work
- CD/Tape/Radio that are OK once the rear speakers are upgraded
- Reliable – looks like it is well built

Smooth, quiet refined ride. Build quality.

Weakness:

Not very sporty handling.

This is the best car I have ever owned. There is no comparison to the ford tauruses that I have owned in the past. This car is so smooth and creamy you won't believe it. Go test drive a Camary then any other American made car, you will buy the Camary. The reason why I bought mine is that my father in-law owns a 1992 Camary xle with 212,000 miles on it, with no investement other than the tires, battery etc. I have a long commute and I rack up the miles (appx. 45,000 per year) I needed a car that was going to last and last. I have 108,000 miles on mine and the only complant I have is the right front strut mount sqeeks over rough roads. The car drives just like its cousin the Lexus es300 for about 10k less! I just joined the Toyota 100,000 mile club on their web site. What other car company even has a 100,000 mile club (other than mercedes). That takes a lot of confidence in your product!!! Buy one, you won't be sorry!!!!!! A+++++++++
