Model Reviewed: XLE V6

Strength:

1. Found one with a "JT..." VIN.
2. Smooth, quiet, efficient, powerful, and problem free V6.
3. ABS and traction control saved our life in a freeway hydroplaining situation.
4. Deep gloss paint.
5. XLE package, leather, sunroof, ... all very nice.
6. Great factory sound system (AM/FM, CD, Cass, and 6 speaker).
7. Car seems to have good weight distribution.
8. Does better on fuel that displayed on window sticker.

Weakness:

No major complaints, but here are a few things for your information:

1. Recall on steering wheel nut.
2. Replaced noisy struts.
3. Rattle noise from passenger side airbag or vent.
4. Erratic transmission shifting while in O/D under 40 MPH.
5. Rear bumper cover paint does not match.
6. Exaust system could be tucked further under out of view.
7. Power seats have limited adjustments.
8. At the time the color selection was not the greatest.

Overall, I am happy with the car and would rate it outstanding.

Change the oil every 3000, and this is a headache free gas and go car.
Quiet and very smooth ride, hard to believe this car is still under $20K.
Air conditioning works awesome! (need it here in Florida) I have quite a few friends with BMW's and Acura's, and at least in the A/C dept, my Camry had them beat.

Weakness:

Brakes made kinda of a grinding noise when applied the first year I owned the car. Dealer told me it had something to do with the newer brake pads they were using at the time. The problem was quickly resolved.

My 1995 Camry has approx. 165,000 miles on it. I have literally beat the hell out of this thing, and it is now finally showing signs that it needs some work (cv joint and anxle I think) A/C still works great. For some, the 4 cyl may not have enough guts, but for fuel effeciency and reliabilty, it can't be beat. These cars last period. My mom and dad each have Camrys (1992 & 1995), and both are going strong.

I can't knock the Honda Accord, because that is a great car too. Still there seem to be a few Toyota bashers posting reviews of this fine automobile.

The Camry is great, part of the reason I bought a new Camry Solara SLE V6 Convertible (review coming later) Oh, and I still kept my 95' Camry.

Strength:

The Camry is still the #1 selling car in America...The quality and time that goes into building one is the reason why it is the BEST. The competition (Nissan) cuts corners...reliability and safety issues are at stake when you cut corners...oh yeah, anyone mention resale lately...i would rather have my camry when it comes time to trade or sell it. It will still hold some serious value. Before you buy the competition...DO YOUR RESEARCH like I did.Quiet ride...even the 4 cylinder has good pick up...GAS MILEAGE is awesome...RESALE...SAFETY...REPUTATION!!!

Weakness:

Would like it to be cheaper but you get what you pay for!!

This is my 3rd Toyota...all ran well over 100 thousand miles and one went to 250,000 before i sold it ...low maintenance...easy to trade or sell...SAFE...RELIABLE...DEPENDABLE...the only way you can knock it is if you work for the competition. You know who you are!!!! the best car on the market YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Strength:

Exceptional reliability. We bought this car when it was almost 10 years old, and had 94000 miles on it, and we didn't have to worry about what we were buying. This car was bought as my first car, (I'm 18), and though it's not a sports car, it certainly does what I need it to, and more. I can haul friends and family around in reasonable comfort, get good gas milage, and don't have to worry about excessive repair bills all the time. I have put about 8000 miles on it in the year that we have owned it, and have had to do no major work to it yet. The car now has over 101000 miles on it, and we have noticed that the suspension seems a little soft and bouncy. The mechanic says that it is ready for new shocks and struts, but says it is still on the original equipment. Incredible

Weakness:

It smokes a very little bit, right after start up, and than quits when the car is warm. The auto. trans. shifts out of first a little abruptly, but nothing to write home about. Other than that, the only thing is that I have had to replace a peice of trim, but nothing else.

I love the car, and assume it will go for many more thousands of miles, and years!!

A little bit bigger than an Accord, but not quite as sporty. Much better reliability than anything from GM.

Strength:

at first everything, including its fame.

Weakness:

weak engyne, and at 32,000 miles damaged the transmission completely, even when I always was faithful in its maintenance, leaving me on the road and with no transportation for 15 days, spending more than 1,000.00 on it. Before that at 12,000 miles the steering wheel got loose, and it was almost inmovible. So i,m not happy neither with my Camry nor with the dealer.

For me personally, I would not recommend a Toyota Camry like mine, since its service has been poor. I am looking for a recall, because the technician who fixed my car thinks it is a manufacturer problem, and I would like to find someone who help me on this or help me pay this amount, since I always thought I purchased one of the best cars of the market.

3- Quiet, Comfortable, Roomy
4- Safety
5- Reasonable resell price

Weakness:

1- Conservative appearence
2- Not much fun to drive
3- Steering is too light
4- Power... (it may satisfy some people though, but not me)

Before having my BMW and Lexus, I was satisified with this car since it cost me little to maintain. After purchasing my 323i, I think my Camry is boring to drive....but the BMW doesnt have enough power since its a 323 only...Finally I got the IS300. Now, I'm glad that I got the Lexus. But the Camry is still a good choice for family cars. (I'll take it over any Accords, Maximas, 626, Malibus...and others) :)

Model Reviewed: Camry XLE V6

Strength:

Power, Dependability, Interior Room, Smooth Ride, Gas Mileage, Good Looks

Weakness:

Brakes and Handling for the V6 aren't quite as good as for the 4cylinder model of the same car, but still very good for any 4 door sedan.

I used to rent cars back in the early 90's. I'd driven so many by the time the 92-96 Camry arrived (too many to list) that I'd become jaded. A car was a car to me, and not necessarily a good one if it was built in the US (sad but true back then). The Camry was a revelation - I didn't know affordable cars could be so good at so many things.

My first experience was with the 4 cylinder LE model (no ABS). I would use them for my personal use - around town, on long distance trips, in all kinds of weather - and was constantly amazed at what it could do. Great power for a 4 cyl, excellent gas mileage (even when being thrashed, or at high speeds, it got between 28-34 MPG), very comfortable interior, and it handled really well for a stock sedan. All that, plus it withstood the mechanical equivelent of Hell that comes with being a rental car vehicle much better than anything else in the inventory.

Fast forward to 2000 (long after I left that job) and I decided to buy a 93 XLE V6 based on those earlier experiences and the fact that I felt that Camrys after 1994 have gotten progressively uglier and/or bland. I have not been disappointed. I still drive a lot of cars, and it's amazing to me just how well this model run of the Camry has held up. The V6 has alot in common with the 4 cylinder, the differences being more power, worse gas mileage (around 22-29 MPG), and the handling is not as crisp due to the heavier weight of the V6 car. Also, the brakes aren't as strong as I expected (and remembered), but I also attribute this to the increase in its weight. On the other hand it feels much more substantial compared to the I4, and that ride - I really don't expect I'll ever need a vehicle that travels down the road better than this one does, unless they start making 'anti-gravity cars' or something.

All in all I love it. I believe this car will be a classic someday. But for those thinking of buying, be aware of the trade-offs between I4 & V6. There's definitely a difference, so determine what you like ahead of time. By the way, all Camrys I've driven have been automatics, which I've actually been very happy with even though I normally like to shift for myself. They really have very few downsides as compared to other 'slushboxes' I've been exposed to. However, I'm told that an excellent 5 speed manual was available for both I4 & V6 engines, so I may be on the lookout for a 'transplant donor' (in addition to being more fun, maybe it will bring the MPGs up a little).
