Strength:
Accelearation, Gas mileage, japanese reputation and resale.
Weakness:
Ride quality. The cruise control knob is so out of the way hidden behind the steering wheel. You have to be a contortionist to get to it. Two months ago my spouse and I bought two brand new cars. A 2003 Ford Focus ZX3, and a 2003 Toyota Corolla. I like the Focus more in every way except for the gas mileage and the acceleration which is better in the Corolla. Rattle noise and radio gap...seems like common complaints for this corolla. I love my new corolla..The 5 speed adds a lot of fun..but there are acouple of things that are just driving me crazy...1:THE ANNOYING RATTLE NOISE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DASH!!!!! took it to the dealership and they said they couldnt douplicate the noise. 2:THE GAP BETWEEN THE DASH AND THE RADIO! took it to the dealer for that also and told me that they couldnt see anything wrong with it. other than that my corolla is great a gets great gas milage. |

unfixable check engine light I bought a Toyota Corolla because everyone kept saying what great cars toyotas are. Well ever since I bought my junk, I mean, my brand new Corolla, it has given me more grief than any American car I have owend. It's been back to the dealer for 7 times!!! The problem: No one knows! The check engine light keeps on poping up for no reason. The dealer can't fix the problem, neither can the pros. Buyer of Toyotas BE AWARE!!!! I have since talked to a few more people that have the same exact problem with their Camry, Corolla, and 4Runner. There seems to be a glitch in a series of the cars that they have put out in the past few years that is not FIXABLE. Why am I doing this? To save you a life time of headache. PLEASE watch out when you buy a Corolla. By the way, they have lost a customer for life. I will never buy another Toyota EVER again! |

RELIABILITY!!! Gas Mileage Comfortable
Weakness:
Original tires (Firestone FR680) were terrible. Original audio speakers were terrible. I've owned my '97 DX for 6 years now. This has been an excellent car. Outside of normal maintenance, I haven't had a single repair. Perfect, trouble-free reliability for 6 years, what could be better than that? I have the 1.8L engine, which provides a bit of pep, but is not the strong-point of the car. The seats are comfortable, it is quiet with the right tires, and I get great gas mileage for an automatic transmission - getting 39MPG on highway, 30MPG in town, and 33-34 going back and forth to work on an everyday basis. Great Highway Car! A truly comfortable and reliable car
Weakness:
Just having to change the timing belt at 96,000 miles and fix the drive train, but other than that it's been a great car The Toyota Camry was my 3rd car after previously owning a 92 Corolla and a 89 Ford Escort, I would say out of all of them, the best car is my Camry. This car has been absolutely fantastic. I've had it for 2 years, bought it at 75,000. Similar Products Used: Toyota Corolla '92 |

Low maintenance, only do the 3000 mile oil change religiously. Great gas mileage.
Weakness:
Crappy radio, but decent enough for NPR. Great little car. Surprisingly peppy. Towed a packed 8x4 Uhaul trailer for 2000 miles cross country 2 yrs ago and had no problem. Much better than my husband's Jetta. He wants to drive this all the time. Similar Products Used: 1999 VW Jetta |

There are some serious problems that seem to be common with the redesign (see above). But don't rule the '03 Corolla out based on that - mine is proof that they're not all like that. Great car so far. I'm not having the problems commonly complained of - sulfur smell, poor mileage (often in cold weather), peeling weatherstripping, rattle in dash, etc. I did have the gap above the radio, but I replaced the head unit the day after I bought it so who cares. Also, I'm just the right height (5'8") for the admittedly awkward seat depth, pedal position, armrest placement, and steering wheel distance to be comfortable for me - probably the same height as the ergonomic engineers at Toyota Japan. If you're taller you may not like it, shorter should be okay. Overall, the Corolla is the perfect car for me, but I count myself lucky - the complaints I listed above are quite pervasive all over the internet. Be sure to do extensive test driving before you buy. CHEAP RADIO THE CAR IS SENSIBLE TO HIGHWAY SIDE WINDS I HAD THE CAR AT 240 000 KM AND SOLD IT AT 320 000 KM. MY FATHER HAD IT BEFORE ME AND THE ONLY THING HE DID WAS MAINTENANCE THATS IT (TIMING BELT EACH 100 000 KM). HE CHANGED THE FRONT PADS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT 150 000 KM AND WHEN I SOLD THE CAR THEY WERE STILL GOOD. I CHANGED THE REAR PADS AT ABOUT 290 000 KM AND THE RADIATOR FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS CAR HAS EXCELLENT AND SUPERB RELIABILITY, THEY JUST LAST FOREVER AND THEY COST NOTHING. THE 1.6 LITER IS PEPPY BUT WITH THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. STILL THE AUTOMATIC CAN RACE TOE TO TOE WITH A CAMRY 2.2 AUTOMATIC 0-60 WITH NO PROBLEMO. OVERALL THIS CAR IS GREAT AND I THINK ITS THE #2 QUALITY CAR AFTER LEXUS. Ride Noise level Build quality Engine power
Weakness:
Stock tires don't grip all that well. Steering could be a little more responsive. Distance of pedals from driver is slightly awkward at first if you are taller. Engine vibrations seem to resonate with parts of chassis / interior under hard acceleration. Maybe will improve with time as things 'loosen' a little I am really impressed with my new Corolla, the build quality is outstanding and I find the interior and exterior design to be quite nice. The ride quality is awesome and handling is decent. It drives very smoothly and quietly, for the most part. The engine is torquey for a 1.8L and pretty smooth, albeit a little loud at times. It accelerates very well for an 'economy car'. The gas mileage is ... need i say anything? Highly recommended to anyone looking for a small car that is somewhat more luxurious than other compacts, of oustanding build quality, and awesome on fuel economy.
