Strength:

Gas mileage, safety features, 5-year powertrain warranty transfers to any owner, CE model has power locks/windows, good Consumer Reports ratings, good safety ratings.

Weakness:

Plain-looking car. A few minor things: only has 34,000 miles, but one piece of molding is already coming off; one time the power lock just didn''t want to lock until I turned the car off and on again; seems a little noisy on the highway.

Recently purchased this car after doing a lot of research. I checked out many Nissan, Honda, VW, and Toyota models. Consumer Reports gave really high ratings to Nissan, Honda, and Toyota, but not to VW -- so that was the first to go. In looking at Honda, their models were a lot more pricey than Nissan or Toyota, so Honda came off my list next. I actually put a down payment on a Nissan Altima, but then read the safety rating at NHTSA web site (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/). For some reason the Altima was lousy for safety in 1998 (was much better both before and after that year). So, I got my deposit back and ended up going with the Corolla CE -- it was over $1000 cheaper, had a better safety rating, and good track record with Consumer Reports

Strength:

Reliabillity, what can i say, it was a rock. Gas mileage, awesome. Just a solid car over all.

Weakness:

Styling, it kinda sucks, all boxy and stuff. Kinda small, especially in the back. Hate friends frienldly criticism, "oh its cute, kinda small."

Great first car. I had saved up about $3500, and went shopping. Tried to buy something japanese, with low mileage, hard to do with $3500. Wanted like a maxima or an acoord. Saw the little blue corolla in the lot and decided to go for it. This is was a great car, farely quick ( i know, i know, 1.6 Litre, sucks and all) fairly smooth, great little car. Upgraded the stereo (10 in. sub, Alpine cd player, pioneer speakers, and it was my little dream car. Concerts, bar, even went on long trips. Untill I crashed it into a police car in late septemer. I miss my car!

Strength:

Only good on gas.

Weakness:

Too much noise, especially, bump roads. More Leg room(Rear Seats). Front brakes make squeaky noise. Cheap Horn. Needs more speakers.(It only has 2 front speakes). If VW can afford to have the Golf Six speakers, I think Toyota should do the same if it wants to compete in the market.

Overall, I am not satisfied with this car. I had huge expectations from Toyota before I purchased this car. Unfortuantely, Toyota failed to meet my expectations. This car is a piece of chunk. I wouldn''t advise anyone to buy this car period.

Strength:

-Excellent powertrain -Great fuel economy -Quick powerful with the 5-speed transmission -Structural rigidity -Fit & finish (all but dashboard) -Quiet and relaxed ride -

Weakness:

-Cheap & rattly dashboard a big-time disapointment -Lower-than-expected dealer response for minor warranty problems -Daytime Running Lights - yuk! -60/40 seats DO NOT fold flat -No tachometer as standard equipment?? -Miniscule interior (although I knew & accepted before purchase) -Marginal A/C (even in cool Colorado) -A/C ALWAYS comes on with the defroster -noisy front brakes

Good commuter car and occasional family transport. Even works well w/small kids & wife if you can pack lightly. I''m getting about 32 - 34 mpg in town ( I don''t drive like grandpa either) and appreciate the tight structure, sharp steering and comfortable seating. I am a little disappointed with the "plasticy" cheap dashboard (in a Toyota!!) and have had a noise problem w/the front brakes - which I repaired myself after the dealer attempted a "fix*". I was replacing a Mazda 626 so the smaller space inside takes some getting used to, but the higher performance came quite naturally. Compared to anything else I test drove (Mazda Protege, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic), this car was the most solid-feeling and had the best performance . Also, absolutely top-drawer powertrain - speedy, smooth & quiet (I have the 5-speed) and should stay that way for years. For me, the best value overall & I am quite happy. My gripes are really very minor & given the price differential of about $2k between the Corolla & the Civic, I got a great deal. * = dealer "fix" for warped rotor & squeaking front pads, apply anti-seize liberally & tell customer all is well - but don''t fix problem. Hope & pray it will get better on its own. I finally got tired of the squeaking, grating & clunking & had warped rotor turned at local auto parts store & bought cheaper semi-metallic pads & reassembled. Cost: about $20 (not including my labor) Brakes are now absolutely perfect, but didn''t have to do a brake job on the Mazda at 20K miles!!

Strength:

The redesign for 2001 is more sporty(round tail/headlights). But its still not extremely exciting. But its very clean. Build quality. Its a toyota, how can you go wrong except for the echo. i also own a celica, and its the same engine. surprising torque. its not heavy, so the car moves. There is alot of car for the price, definitely a great buy.

Weakness:

cd player not standard in LE model. styling is a bit too plain. i''m trying to find them, but there isn''t alot. Toyota!!!- "S" model should have more horsepower, 140. Celica GT should have 160. GTS should have 220 plus with AWD option.

its very clean styling, good solid engine, toyota quality, reliability, price, 0% finance, very nice build quality for price.

Strength:

-low insurance because of name plate (technically a family car) -styling -reliability (it''s toyota, need i say more?) -gas mileage is unbelievable -front seats feal great -takes corners like a pro

Weakness:

-spotty acceleration -some parts hard to find -horrible stock stereo

A good, fun car. Not especially peppy, but has the juice when you need it. I''ve found that it is sometimes reluctant in first gear off the start, but second is explosive and can be revved up to 90 Km/h (that''s being pretty rough though). The rear wheel drive is great, especially with the limited slip diff. in the rear. It looks as sporty as a corolla should, really sleek. Lots of passenger room for a 2 door.

Model Reviewed: Corolla GTS/ sr5

Strength:

Reliability. The ''86 has held up through 185,000kms of driving very well, the ''82 has sustained 156,000kms. Both cars have survived every harsh winter in Calgary. The ''86 was very different from the regular corollas back in the 80s: it came equipped with 4 wheel disk brakes, better suspension then the sr5 models, and a quick revving engine. The 4age engine, while not producing a lot of horsepower by todays standards, loves to be pushed, and really puts the little car through its paces. The RWD is loads of fun - especially with a limited-slip differential (sliding the car around is a blast), but isn''t really practical in the winter. Much of the interior, if still in good condition, feels like a more expensive car (leather wrapped steering wheel, lumbar support, adjustable side bolsters on the driver seat, etc). My SR5 is quite a basic car, but it has held up well for a long time - even having spend the past few winters sitting in a back alley. The engine, although old and out of date, is nuke proof and never seems to quit.

Weakness:

Rust. 80''s toyotas are known for having rust problems.. especially in a climate like mine. The rust needs to be fixed, or it will just get worse. No power locks, power windows, A/C.. I don''t mind not having these things, but some people might.

Corollas are great cars. Presently, I have two: a 1982 sr5 handed down from my father, and a 1986 gts which I bought. I like these particular years because of the rear wheel drive, and I especially enjoy the 1986 for it''s 4age engine.

The Differential!

This was my Dear mother''s car until April. She passed away and I inherited it. It has 80,000. miles on it now. Started having problems with grinding and banging. The Differential, which is part of the Trasnmission has gone bad. SHOCK! The price to fix is between $885.00 - 2485.00. This is not supposed to happen to a Toyota!
