Model Reviewed: / Toyota Corolla

Strength:

- Nice looks for a compact car.
- VERY VERY reliable!!!
- Low operating cost (over 30 MPG)
- Good ergonomics inside

Weakness:

- The 1995 model had a bad alternator that needed replacement.
- Needs more power.
- The engine grunts too loud and the cabin vibrates sometimes.

The Toyota Corolla (Base Model) is a very simple and reliable car. It just runs and runs without any problems. I would recomend this car over ay other car because of its cost, reliability, and ergonomics.

Model Reviewed: Corolla GT-S

Strength:

Look at overall impression.

Weakness:

The only problem that I have found lately is finding performance tires. The choices are getting more dismal every year.

I could list a back seat. However, it's better than any of the sport coupes out today.

This car has been amazing. Ihave had it for 9 years. It drives like a sports car. It will do 138 mph. It will also average 35 mpg. The layout is perfect and the sport seats are just about ideal. My car now has 131,000 on it. It is my daily driver. The car also has a big trunk. Take this car on a trip and you can take all your packing. However, rear seats have little room for legs but ok for heads. This car was Toyota's sleeper and its a shame they have not been produced since 1991. However, the new Celica is really a Corolla GT-S. These cars are complete bargins today and I would recommend anyone to purchase one if you can find one. My car came with all options except for cruise. I would recommend purchasing a radar detector. All GT-S's come with 5-speed only.

Similar Products Used:

78 and 79 Celica, 85 Corolla SR-5

The rear wheel drive of all these models produces fun interesting moments, but they are left in the dust compared to the GT-S.

Model Reviewed: - 4 door base model with A/C

Strength:

Reliable!
Usefull!
Only "major" problem I had: Crank pulley broke off, due to my negligence.

Weakness:

The steering feels numb,
Brakes are overassisted and sponge like in feeling.

She has the stock Inline 4 DOHC 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve engine. (4A-F)
it takes about 7-8 mins for it to warm up and have power.
Cold, it has no juice below 2.5K or so.
The stock engine used to make 90Hp @ 6000 RPM

I did 2 modifications to it:
- Slightly modified intake manifold
- Aftermarket 4 barrel carb.

Yes, the lower-end motor had a carb,
only the 4A-FE and 4A-GE powerplants had injectors

Anyways, her engine now gives approx 130 to 140Hp @ around 5000 RPM
It's much better then stock, actually pretty decent.

She gets about 5.2L/100Km (around 47 MPG) on the highway.
But around 10L/100Km in the city.

She gives a lot of bang for the buck,
but I would recommend buying a more recent car.

Strength:

Reliabilty, looks, comfort. Great for first time drivers.

Weakness:

Weak Horsepower...needs more engine power!!!

I love it except Toyota needs to make a turbocharger and other performance oriented parts for Corollas. I'll probably keep this car for a long while.

Strength:

The car was dependable, handled great and was good on gas mileage.

Weakness:

I cannot think of any, best car I ever owned.

Well I used to have a Probe, would never buy another Ford again. My Corolla was special... I would not hesitate to get another. Matter of fact mine just got totaled because of a bad judgment call (a u turn) and some idiot flying up a turning lane in a pickup truck, hitting part of the back door, back rear corner panel on the driver's side. I had $11,129 worth of damage. I also came out of it in one piece with bruises and a little back and neck pain vs. the alternative of being dead. My husband and I are car hunting and Corolla is at the top of my list.

This was only my second car, with a 1993 Ford Probe being the first.

Strength:

Fun, reliable, great handling. Bought new and now have over 250,000 miles with original trans. Mileage for combo hwy and city still about 30 mpg. Did I mention Fun? This car has great agility, pep and torque on the turns. Excellent seats for long trips. Cargo space with the fold down seats... I can get 8 foot lumber from Home Depot in here and 10 footers out the sunroof. The capacity for packing stuff in the car is also amazing, great clearance with the huge rear door.

Weakness:

Road noise through the driver windows at about 80 mph, gas gauge went out when it turned 10 years old. Oh well, I use the trip meter and refill when I hit 300 miles.

If you see one of these for sale with mileage up to 100k, grab it. May need some TLC to bring it up to speed but you'll get a great car with a great engine.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Corolla Hatchback

Strength:

- Great mileage: 38 mpg on average. 30-32 on long highway trips (90 mph or more)
- Reliability,and smoothness in operation.
- Fairly confortable for a compact car.
- Nicely placed cupholders (a rarity in Europe).
- Nobody is going to steal it.

Weakness:

- Bad OE tires. Had to replace 165/70-13 standard tires with much grippier 175/65-14 Michelin XH1. Better grip and a little more noise and harshness.
- Not so strong headlights. H4 Premium bulbs cured this.
- AC is not as strong as those of US cars and GM Opels I use to drive.
- Kind of cramped inside.

This is an excellent and sensibly engineered vehicle. I was attracted by Toyota reputation, long warranty (3 year/63000 miles bumper to bumper)and low cost.
After 28000 miles I'm persuaded I got the best value/money in this class. I would recommend this car to those who are seeking for a practical, cheap and no frill car with the quality of vehicles costing thousands more.
It's good time to shop for these cars,as people still have to recognize the strengths of Toyota products in southern Europe. Recent introduction of a 5 years/100000 miles bumper to bumper warranty makes them even more palatable. It's my opinion that these cars are built to last and serve you faithfully in a hassle free manner. Not the car for the image seeker or the sporty driver. In fact, they don't do much to stir your spirit but you soon start appreciating the seamless and refined way they work.

Model Reviewed: VE

Strength:

great gas mileage, Toyota reliability, silky smooth manual transmission, fast heater/defroster, excellent ride (for a small car), fairly peppy engine, quiet for a small car

Weakness:

cramped interior, VE doesn't have fold down seats, cheap and chirpy tires,
seats uncomfortable on long rides, paint chips easily, not great handling, no wagon version available

1) Well made and reliable. Not one problem after 29,000 miles.
2) Great mileage and reliability make this an inexpensive car to own and operate.
3) A good little car!
4) I'd advise a new buyer to wait a year or two until the next, bigger and (no doubt) better version of Corolla comes out. The back of current model is way too cramped.
5) I'd also recommend the manual transmission for more pep and better mileage.
6) Bring back the Corolla Wagon!

I think it rides more smoothly than most bigger cars such as Taurus and Accord.

Weakness:

average cornering

Very solid car that I bought with 13K miles. A similar Nissan Stanza was in rough shape with the same miles. A used Contour is a good alternative. Ford buys them back above market so I didn't buy one.

Handles far better than a 1994 Taurus my teenage son drives.

Bearings wore out on all wheels around 60K miles. Dealer picked up half the cost.
