Strength:
Looks --Galactic Blue w/grey leather interior, 180 hp, sound system. Better looking exhaust than previous years.
Weakness:
I shouldn't have to take it back to the dealership after only 200 miles. VW quality may still be in question. Vehicle is 4000 pounds. Just bought the car about a month ago. GLS 1.8T, Leather and Sport packages. I haven't had any major issues so far, but there are only 500 miles on the odometer. At 200 miles I had an airbag light come on, and the dealership couldn't find anything wrong. They cleared the code and I guess I'll just have to watch. Also, the passenger front speaker cover rattled, but the dealership took care of that. Keeping my fingers crossed nothing else happens. All in all a beautiful car, and a pleasure to drive. I just wish kids would stop revving their engines at every light wanting to race. Stupid. Similar Products Used: 1996 VW Golf |

road noise at highway speeds drink holders block stereo controls VW does not deal much Ok people. I recently purchased a new silver jetta gli. I know my cars and I put in an exhaustive search in selecting this model. I traded in my 96 gti vr6 so I am very knowledgable of Volkswagen quirks. This car equals or surpasses any car in its class, and in reality, matches up well with BMWs priced in the 40K range. The 201 hp vr6 with its 4 valves per cylinder breathes much better than the old vr6 and its power range is amazing. You can hit the gas in any gear and you have all the necessary torque and power. Speaking of gears, the six speed manual transmission which comes standard in the GLI is smoother and less rubbery than my old GTI's. The eight speaker Monsoon sound system is sweet, and the 17 inch wheels with fat Michellin tires are a nice touch too. It's too early to tell about dependability, but my GTI went 5 years before I started to experience problems, and quite honestly, I drove that car so hard I'm surprised it just didn't implode at some point. The 1.8T is a cool engine, especially for the money, but with all the mods and chips you want to put in it, it will still not feel as powerful as the six cylinder and the useable power won't be there. Besides, I live in Florida where the hot, humid weather is an absolute turbo killer. I experienced the same window problems as everybody with my GTI, but I don't expect problems from my new Jetta. I think most of the reviewers here are a little to timid or civil at their respective dealerships. I promise if I have any problem with my new Jetta, the service manager will remedy the situation immediately. Plus, if dependablility is the only issue for you, cars aren't your passion. So just get the boring Toyota or Honda. Note to the people who have apparently bought brand new VW's and have had countless problems....Research the lemon laws in your state and stop letting some grease monkey at the dealership push you around!!! VW Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8T
Strength:
Great styling, strong engine output, sporty handling, great stereo, quality-feel to all of the interior components.
Weakness:
Short warranty. I am really shocked that I'm reading all of these bad reviews.... I test drove quite a few cars prior to purchasing my VW Jetta. I had pretty much decided on a "3" series BMW, but was a little reluctant to spend over 30K on a smaller car. I did a few searches on the internet, and came across the Jetta. I had never thought about getting one, but decided to give it a shot. Oh my gosh, the car fit me like a glove. I went with the Wolfsburg edition, since it has the Ricaro bucket seats, the stiffer sport suspension, BBS wheels, leather steering wheel and e-brake handle, and wider tires. Comfort: I am 6'1", and am rather comfortable driving/riding as front passenger. But realistically, adults will not be very comfy in the back seats. Luckily, the back seats are reserved for my young kids. There is not much leg room. Loads of trunk space. Controls/guages: All controls and guages are very visible and placed well in the car. I especially love the blue/red dash lighting (so does everyone else that sees it). Cupholder is kind of in a weird spot, but I've never really had much problem with it. Drivability: This car's performance is well above the bar for the price range of comparable cars. This car is above the "3 series BMW" that I almost bought. The 1.8T engine is very quick, especially when you push the car at high speeds. Excellent fuel mileage. The 5-speed manual tranny is fabulous. I'm not sure about the other model Jettas, but the sport tuned suspension is wonderful. The car handles like a rally car. Problems noted: The following are the only problems experienced by me so far since I drove the car out of the showroom: 1) Some strange goo emitted from the doors on extremely hot days. Once dried, it feels like Crisco. 2) My wife shut my center console too hard and broke the latch. The dealer replaced it for free. 3) My brake lights started just staying on, even after I stopped braking. Apparently, there is a switch that had to be repositioned. Experiencing no problems now. My dealer is awesome. The service department has been nothing but helpful, returning my car from its' standard services on time or early. Looks! Pretty good get-up-and-go for a 4-cyl. Decent stereo. Love that the windows and sunroof closes with the key.
Weakness:
Front seats are hard. Back seats won't allow anyone over 5'7" sit comfortably. Parts are outrageously expensive (but that's what to expect from a foreign vehicle). Purchased my beautiful dark green Jetta right off the showroom floor after I got my first real job. I really should have looked at it better though (see weaknesses below). Don't get me wrong, it's a good car, but has some minor drawbacks. Cost was way too much for this car. I got mine with sunroof and alloy wheels. It is a really cute car though and has been pretty reliable thus far. Similar Products Used: Pontiac Grand Am Saturn SC2 |

service quality regret buying this car.... I've had this car for two years now and have had nothing but problems. One week after driving it brand new off the lot, the air bag light comes on....turns out the part was defective. Then came the problems with the engine light coming on. One time resulted in the car breaking down due to hoses showing abnormal wear, the next time the light went on the O2 sensor had to be replaced, and recently it went on again. I waiting to see the cause of this problem as it is at the dealership now. Overall the car is a piece of junk and it only has 22000 miles. I am extremely disappointed in the car and will never buy a VW again. I've only been to the dealership for service which is equally as horrible as the car. |

1.8 liter turbocharged engine delivers quiet, spirited performance and good fuel economy.
Weakness:
Too much wind noise at highway speeds, squeaky and creaky interior, defective power window regulators. (If yours haven't broken yet, they will.) German engineering isn't all it's cracked up to be: squeaky center console, creaky doors, window regulators that break and allow door glass to fall into doors. I've only been driving the car for three months, yet the window regulators have failed on driver's door AND passenger's door. Caveat emptor! |

Beauty is only skin-deep I owned a Jetta for 3 years - 3 years too long. My air conditioning broke twice - during summer, in the first four months of ownership. Oxygen sensor problems galore. Power source? That's supposed to work? When I finally got fed up enough spending hundreds of dollars on things that a three year old car should not have problems with, I traded it in for more reliability. Cute, but that's it. |

Strength:
(Almost)precise handling. VR6 is buttery smooth. Classy interior. For all you people who complain a lot, don't buy the Jetta. This car's not for you.
Weakness:
Body roll on corners. I had the VR6 and it's quiet as a sleeping baby on the highway at 80mph! I love this car except for the msuhy suspension. A lot of people who complain about this car are just whiners and do not deserve to buy it in the first place. First of all, no car is perfect. If you compare Japanese and American cars with German cars, it is basically an orange to apples comparison. Japanese cars are just too bland, american cars are too flashy - wildly designed but not much car. What's with the new trend nowadays? Corollas, Mazdas, Fords, etc. , now all have this antenna on top thing? Then they call themselves sporty? What a bunch of fakes! If you want that extra something from your driving, get a german car. Otherwise, get a honda or a toyota if you want to go with the masses. Similar Products Used: 96, 98 Toyota Corolla - the blandest car on the planet! |
