Strength:
Very good handling and car-like feel. Very smooth and quiet. Ergonomics are excellent and show very high level of attention to details. We spend lots of time in the car and it is very comfortable for long-hauls with lots of stuff. Finish quality is perfect, and the materials are good. The A/C is great, which is pretty important in central Texas.
Weakness:
The sliding doors are easily knocked out of adjustment, rattle on bumpy roads, and even our dealer admits that he has only one or two "experts" in the body shop who understand how they work. The headlights are also inadequate; I'm trying to find out if there are brighter bulbs available. Yes, definitely. We paid about $25K for an SE with pkg 28E, which has everything on the SE except for the 3.8 ltr engine. The alternatives from Honda and Toyota are sold by jerk dealers without vehicles to even test-drive, and they expect premium prices. The Ford Windstar seemed pretty good to me, but couldn't sell the wife. Our dealer, Maxwell, in Taylor, couldn't be better. No hassles with anything, ever. I had braced myself for the worst when we intially went in, but it was actually great. Similar Products Used: We had a 97 and really flogged it; over 50K in the first 18 months. Although we bought the extended warranty because we had heard about quality problems, the car had none. We did not buy any extended warranty on the 99. It is essentially the same car as we bought in 97, which was fine with us. |

Dodge Caravan
Strength:
Sliding door option for both sides of vehicle is very good. Availablility of parts is good, you will need them with this vehicle. Great versatility with seating options and cargo space is handy. Will take a 4 foot wide sheet of plywood, or kids hockey, baseball, soccer and great for 7 passengers.
Weakness:
Overall quaility of engineering and quality control is average at best. Transmission failure and weakness has still not been corrected from earlier years and continues to be a problem. Have owned one other Caravan and suffered similar fate....dealer assured me that this problem was rectified and as it turns out it hasn't been. Headlights are weak and almost unsafe. Minor defects such as loose fittings and body parts, cruise control defects, leaking windows and wind noise are the mechanical side of the story. The worst part however, is the service and attitude of service reps. This company is NOT CUSTOMER FOCUSED, and the hidden warranties reflect Chryslers lack of loyalty to their customers. Check out the numerous web site complaints of paint and transmission defects where owners have had to take Chrysler to court to get a fair settlement. My family owns three Chrysler vans and we purchased these at about the same time. Similar complaints in all three. Three different dealerships have all provided poor service and attitude. Would not buy another. Paid $25,000. I would not recommend this vehicle. Honda and Toyota are making much better products for similar money and overall quality of these imports is higher. Similar Products Used: Ford Windstar - Windstar much better to drive, quality of finish higher, quieter and a lot more power, but the Windstar had engine head gasket problems at 90K. |

Strength:
This has been a workhorse for the wife and kids. She is constantly on the road transporting the little ones here and there. She loves it. With the kids, it just doesn't stay clean for some reason. Need automatic carpet vacuum that driver can press a button and activate.
Weakness:
We had the battery and ignition go out at 37k miles, just over the warranty - cost was $350. Talked to Chrysler and they said that this should not have happend so soon and reimbursed us the cost. Other than that, we have used it for everything. Paid $28000. This was a loaded van. I would recommend it to others that are looking for a good running kid transporter. But get the Grand Caravan as the Caravan has no storage space. |

Dodge Gran Caravan
Strength:
Option of 2 quads instead of middle bench, double sliding doors, decent ride, easy to drive and handle, good airconditioner, rear air, roominess, comfortable seats. I am grateful, also, for the ABS. It has kicked in several times and I am convinced kept us from sliding into other vehicles.
Weakness:
Too much air sound, too many repairs, too low (We scrape on inclines, etc.), headlights don't seem to be bright enough sometimes (We are constantly saying, "Are the headlights on?" and double checking them.) We paid around 25,000 including TTL and extended warrantee. As someone else said, I would definitly not buy another one without the extended warrantee. We have the warrantee up to 75,000 miles and I wish we had the 100,000 mile. We had our hoses and rack(steering) replaced at 2 months and it looks as if the rack is going out again at almost 2 years. Our cassette player went out right after our factory Warr. expired. We have replaced motors in both doors and have one that keeps "falling out of adjustment". I believe that for the money we spent we should have not had to have as many repairs. However, I have to say that so far the 3 different Chrysler/Dodge Service departments that we have used have been very good at fixing everything. I tend to think that we have an unusual situation or somewhat of a "lemon" because I haven't heard of anyone else having problems to this extent. I would recommend them, especially for people with several children. We are considering trading this one in on a newer model and hopefully getting rid of the problems. Similar Products Used: Have briefly driven other vans and never found one we liked at all compared to this one. |

Dodge Caravan Sport
Strength:
Many available features, attractive, handles nicely, well thought out interior, ingenious seat design, safe, comfortable and reassuring to drive, nice stereo (the one with the CD player), 16 million cup holders.
Weakness:
Practically no back-up light, annoying glove compartment, everyone and their sister has one!!!!!! This is the world's most popular Minivan and for good reason. It handles nicely and feels nice an secure. Dodge needs to put in a stronger backup light and you should plot now how to set yours apart from everyone elses. But otherwise, excellent work. |

Grand Caravan AWD
Strength:
Good handling, ride, ergonomics.
Weakness:
Front skirt hangs low and is easy to hit on a curb or snow berm. Purchased in Jan. 99 for $29,000. This is an SE model, pretty much loaded except no power seats or captain's chairs. Previous to this purchase, I bought a new '94 Grand Caravan SE AWD and traded it in on the '99. Only problem with the '94 was the AWD differential went out just before the powertrain warranty expired at 70,000. So far, no problems with the '99 at 17,000. The improvements, mostly engonomics, over the '94 convinced me to stay with the line. Also, the vehicle has always received high marks by Consumer Reports and others. Great ride, excellent visibility, and stays plenty warm during our 50 below winters here in Fairbanks (the optional rear heater is a must up here!). I would highly recommend this automobile to anyone, and not just families. I am single and it is great for hauling things. With the rear seats out, even 4x8 sheets of plywood fit with room to spare. Strength:
Smooth ride. No problems. I'm at 34,000 miles and haven't had to do anything but normal maintenance.
Weakness:
Heat in the rear doesn't come out of top vents. It's designed this way, but it doesn't heat up the back very fast. I love it! I commute an hour to and from work every day and make long trips on the weekends. Comfortable interior. Lots of room. I haven't had any mechanical problems at all. I would recommend this car to a friend without any hesitation. I think they've gotten all the kinks out that they've had in previous years. Similar Products Used: This is my first mini-van. |
