Honda Odyssey Minivans | Wagons

Honda Odyssey Minivans | Wagons

DESCRIPTION

The Honda Odyssey minivan lives up to Honda's reputation for refinement, convenient features and great fit and finish.

The Odyssey is available in four trims: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring. All trims use a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The EX-L and Touring trims carry the most recent version of Honda's variable cylinder management system (VCM), which allows the V6 engine to switch among three, four, and six cylinders to increase fuel efficiency. The interior features a third-row Magic Seat that folds into the floor. Maximum seating capacity for the Odyssey is eight passengers. Safety features such as side-impact and curtain airbags, four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system are standard on all models. Luxury features such as leather trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, navigation and entertainment systems are available.

The Odyssey carries-on for 2010 with minimal changes

Strength:

Strong engine.
Fabulous handling (for a minivan).
Transformer interior options.
Good looks.
Controlled, comfortable ride.
Handy storage space in the dash (which accomodates CDs) and under the passenger seat.
Decent, but not fabulous sound system.
The Michelin Symmetry tires work well in rain and pretty well in snow (I live in Western Washington where good rain performance matters)

Weakness:

Slow electric doors.
Gear shift lever that does not have a preference for "D4".
Paint chips easily.
Mediocre fuel economy (sheesh, what do you expect in a 2-ton car with a 200 HP engine?).
A fair amount of noise from the Michelen Symmetry tires at freeway speeds.

We didn't buy this car to make us feel good about ourselves, to show off how financially successful we are, or to impress the neighbors. We bought it to haul people and stuff, and boy does it do that well!

Flip the rear seat down, drive to the grandparents, unload the luggage, flip the rear seat back up and take Grandma and Grandpa out to dinner.

Pull out the middle seats, load a dad and four Boy Scouts and all of their gear and take off for a 3-day camping trip. When it snows on the trip (three of our last five campouts) the traction control pulls just fine. (I bought chains for it, but have never used them.)

Take half a Little League team out for pizza.

Drop the rear seat, slide the middle seats to the outside positions, drop the tray, and stack lumber between them. Take out the middle seats and load up a dozen sheets of plywood. Drop the back seat and fill up the rear area with bark and fertilizer (in bags -- it's not a pickup!).

If you want a sexy, good-looking ride for five people, get a Jaguar. If you want to haul people and stuff, and you get tired of lifting heavy bench seats in and out (I had an Aerostar for 10 years -- I know from lifting seats), get the Odyssey. Nothing else compares.

This replaced our 1991 Aerostar which self-destructed after 125,000 miles. The Honda is from a different, and much better, planet than the Aerostar.

Strength:

3.5L VTEC is Great! Handles just like an Accord, 3rd row seat, 2nd row captain/bench conversion very convenient and easy, power sliding doors operates with any flaws, traction control equals safer driving in poor weater, build quality surpasses many other makes, interior room, smooth ride and road feel is just perfect for me.

Weakness:

Stereo could use better speakers, but why limit yourself to factory speakers. Even if a better quality speaker was offered I would not opt. for one. I would rather buy a set of quality aftermarket speakers that suits my needs because at least I know its made of quality materials. Upgraded factory systems are usually from the low end of the quality spectrum. Dealers will not go below MSRP.

I test drove other vans and my opinion is the Odyssey is the best minivan. It may not have the best of everything but functionally it is the most appealing and accomodating. The sliding doors works great for me. Carrying a childseat and bags gives me limited use of my hands so opening the doors via the remote is great. Others have complained about the doors not operating correctly. They have got to understand that Honda designed the doors to only open when the van is in Park and the doors must be unlocked. I feel that people have just got to be a little patient. After all you don't want your children opening the door while the van is moving, do you? And one last thing. If you have the EX model, the gear shifter should not be a problem because most of your radio controls can be done on the wheel.I have one advice for shoppers out there, shop through the internet. Walking into a dealer floor and dealing with the retail sales people will cost you more. Dealing with the fleet/internet reps. is more pleasant and they are willing to sell at MSRP if you just ask. Plus the Fleet/Internet dept. can get you the van you want while the retail people can only estimate when.

Strength:

Ride, reliability, handling, gas mileage, dual power doors, styling, you can have your Honda and your family too!

Weakness:

Front seats need side supports, itsy bitsy speakers aiming nowhere

Great vehicle, grows on me everyday after 9 months. Pure Honda in concept, reliability has been perfect. The dual power doors are indispensable for handling two infants. You would be crazy to get any other mini-van... the Chrysler lines will cost you 50% more over the life of the van gauranteed (repairs, repairs, repairs and gas and major devaluation).

HONDA VALUE !!! RELIBILITY !!! AND IT'S A HONDA !!!
MILEAGE WAS 21 MPG MIXED DRIVING AND SHOULD IMPROVE AFTER BREAKIN PERIOD IS COMPLETED. VAN IS SHARP LOOKING AND SOLID !!! >>MESA BEIGE !!!
INTERIOR IS VERY NICE. I ADDED A LEATHER COVER ON THE STEERING
WHEEL TO IMPROVE THE THICKNESS AND FEEL>> THIS ENHANCED IT GREATLY.
LET,S SIMPLY PUT IT THIS WAY>>> THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING AND BELIEVE ME HONDA'S PUDDING IS HARD TO GET !!!>>> CANNOT MEET DEMAND.
ALSO LET ME SAY THIS !!! LOOK FOR YOURSELF , DRIVE ONE IF POSSIBLE AND I THINK YOU'LL AGREE THAT THIS VAN IS FUN AND FUNCTIONAL !!! SUVS ARE GAS HOGS, LIMTITED FUNCTION AND RIDES LIKE A TRUCK !!! SURE YOU CAN TAKE IT OFF ROAD BUT SERIOUSLY WOULD THIS EVER HAPPEN ??? ALSO THEY ARE TRYING TO MIMIC THE MINIVANS >> GOING TO CAR PLATFORMS >>> TOYOTA'S HIGHLANDER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weakness:

AS MENTIONED ,,,, THE FRONT DOOR SPEAKERS . THATS REALLY ALL !!!

TOTALLY AWESOME !!! HONDA HAS FRIED THE COMPETITION AND THEY KNOW IT !!!
IT'S BEEN A LONG WAIT , BUT HONDA HAS DELIVERED A GRAND SLAM !!!
THINK ABOUT IT ! POWER= 3.5 LITER V-6, SAFETY=RATED 5 STARS ,FUNCTION = HAULING FLEXIBILITY AND CREATURE COMFORTS ABOUND.
I'LL ADMIT THE FRONT SPEAKERS ARE UNEXCUSABLE>> CHEAP ONE-WAY 6.25 PIONEERS. BUT IT'S SO EASY TO REPLACE WITH 3-WAY 6.25 "SONY EXTREMES" WHICH I FOUND ON SALE AT MAJOR ELECTONICS STORE FOR HALF PRICE>>$40 !!! NOW THE STEREO/CD SOUNDS RICH AND FULL....NOT CHEAP AND FUZZY AS BEFORE . NOT TO MENTION MUCH ,MUCH , BETTER WHEN YOU CRANK IT UP !!! THE EARLY WARNING GAS LIGHT STILL IS FAULTY>> GOES OFF
AT 16 GALLONS... 4 GALLONS LEFT .>>DRIVER/PASSENGER ONLY...BUT WITH THE
VAN LOADED IT SHOULD BE 2 GALLONS. NOTE IT WAS WORSE ON EARLIER MODELS BUT I'M GUESSING THAT THE SENSOR WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A COMPROPMISE AND I"M FINE WITH PLENTY INSTEAD LITTLE GAS LEFT !!!
ROAD NOISE IS NOT BAD BUT NEEDS TO IMPROVE ON WIND NOISE AT 60 MPH OR ABOVE . <<< SLIGHT LEVEL AND MUTED ...NOT REALLY THAT BAD AT ALL.

HOWEVER IF FORD COULD PUT A SMALL TRITON V-8"FUEL EFFEICENT" IN ITS WINDSTAR WITH ITS MATCHED TRANSMISSION THAT COULD BE INTERESTING !!! HOWEVER MILEAGE WOULD BE A MIRACLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEIR F-150'S
ARE WONDERFUL TRUCKS !!!!!!!!

Strength:

Good acceleration, the integrated garage door opener was cool. The engine noise approached non existent and the climate control worked well.

Weakness:

The electric doors were and anoyance rather than advantage and at one occasion trapped my wifes hand. The back door was appalling needed to be slammed to shut (the dealer said there was no fault). Indeed we found ourselves denting the back door shutting it. Overall the body was easy to scratch and dent even with the hand! The clever door open indicator failed to indicate a door open but the bleeping did. The horn sound on arming the anti theft must be great for the blind but an annoyance to the rest of us! The suspension was what I think of as American cars it didn't give rise to bad handling but it was harsh on railway lines and bottomed in storm curbs.
Also for such a big vehicle the driver space was not generous even at the extremes of the electronic seating rendering it of no function to a man of my height.

I bought this vehicle for three reasons. The first I thought I needed more than five seats, second it got very good reviews and cost less than some of its competitors, third I wanted at least traction control for the winter, and the LX didn't have that as standard. I found the performance good, the handling adequate, I found the suspension sometimes harsh and yet prone to bottom. Overall one couldn't fault the functionality if one needs lots of space and also refinement. Yet I didn't like it. The build standard was not good and many of the gadgets didn't work. Once I found I really didn't need seven seats, then I also found I didn't want to keep it. Some of my irritations shouldn't be present on a $25K vehicle!

I have not owned another mini van and have traded it in for a Santa fe LX SUV I much prefer the ride and build quality of the latter. If one need seven seats I would go for the Oddyssey LX cheaper model and not have those dreadful power rear doors!

Strength:

Has regular doors instead of those sliding doors which I don't care for.

Weakness:

could use a bigger engine - passing up hill can be an adventure.

(1997 Model) - overall look is clean and more stylish than typical mini-vans. I did see that the '99 Odyssey is completely different. Bigger/sliding doors/boxy looking.

Strength:

Solid and very responsive handling, good driving position and comfort, Zippy power (It's a rocket!), third seat disappears into the floor in seconds.

Weakness:

4-speaker stereo in the LX model sounds flat and dull.

(1999 Model) - This is a very solid, nimble, and zippy mini-van--in spite of its huge and box-like appearance. It has a much tighter turning circle than the Mitsubishi Expo it replaced, even though the Mitsubishi was a much smaller vehicle. The third seat disappears into the floor in a couple of seconds, and leaves a great storage well when in the upright position. Even loaded with 7 adults, it accelerates like a rocket when going up hill. It is very comfortable and everyone who has taken a ride in it has been impressed.

Strength:

hide away rear seat, quiet engine; small turning radius

Weakness:

weak rear suspension - tends to sit really low to the ground with minimal load(2 children in the rear seat 100-150 lbs.); loud ride on the freeway; oil dipstick hard to read; cheap plastic (fluid) caps in engine compartment.

We bought the Odyssey based upon the original high rating of Consumer Reports. But, since then the reports have deteriorated and so has our impression of the Honda product. The ride is decent, except for the loud road noise while on the freeway. We do like the set up of the van for traveling - with its fold away third seat. However, when we do travel we find that the rear rim of the van is sitting very close (low) to the rear wheels. If you need a minivan to carry a full load (7 people) this is not the vehicle for you.

I've only owned this car for half a year and i'm already in love with it. The suspension offers a great ride, and the engine sounds great. it also delivers good power and not that much noise. the seating positions are nice and the fold away third row seating is terrific. although i'm not crazy about the exterior styling of this car, the interior seems pretty nice. it's really a great car.
