Strength:

Holds lots of people & luggage, comfortable, pretty good ride.

Weakness:

Many repairs needed over past 2 years. Annoying squeak (can't find out what it is).

I bought this van used in Nov 97. It had about 60K miles, and I paid about $10 grand, including a 24 mo warranty. Among the problems that I encountered in 30K miles of driving were: major AC overhall, replaced water pump, starter motor, rear shocks, brakes (all around), rear brake calipers, and new transmission. Luckily,I had that warranty!

Advice: Don't buy any pre-1997 Chrysler van without a warranty. Try for one that doesn't have a deductible (all those things that I mentioned cost me $100 per item).

Strength:

Voyager is a good value, provides all the basic minivan capabilities (car pooling soccer team, carrying groceries, etc) without a lot of fuss or muss. Good, comfortable ride, good field of view, reliable, reasonable gas milage, has met our family transportation needs for almost 5 years now. Chrysler dealer service has been good.

Weakness:

Lots of wind noise, we had to replace the air conditioner this year ($$$) and were told by mechanics that was common in this vehicle design :-(. AC somewhat weak, struggles to stay up with Florida heat. Have had intermittent problems with "Check engine" light coming on for no reason.

Have been very pleased with the basic Voyager for the last 5 years, it has been a good, reasonably priced family car. We got ours with only basics (few extra bells and whistles) for a good price and it has served us well. Comfortable, adequate power (no drag racing!), a practical choice. Minor annoyance - wind noise - we didn't notice till after buying, so we just had to get used to it. Recent problems with Air Conditioner, and bothersome intermittent warning light, as well as some hesitation developing, making us think it is now time to replace it. We like keeping a car for the long haul (8+ years) and are somewhat disappointed that it appears to be 'wearing out' and we need to replace it sooner.
NOTE: Radio says Plymouth brand being terminated in two years, so if you are thinking of a Voyager, you might want to consider its 'Twin' the Dodge Caravan instead.

Strength:

The 1988 Plymouth mini-van (Voyager) came with lots of problems. Be prepared to replace the engine. Also, they stream smoke from the tailpipe. Further, that year model did not come with rear vents for the air conditioner/heater so back passengers tend to be extremely uncomfortable.

Weakness:

See above.

The mini-van is excellent for hauling around kids to sport events, dance events, etc. Just be aware that there was much improvement with the newer model Voyagers (from 1990 to date).

Strength:

Versatility

Weakness:

Transmission (torque convertor) blew at 49K. Very high NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). Dealer and Chrysler are terrible to work with to get issues resolved.

We had minor issues since day one, but mostly minor stuff. However, when the torque converter in the transmission disintegrated at 49K miles it was a different story. I confronted the dealer with volumes of information showing that Chrysler Corporation (now Diamler Chrysler) had fully paid for this same repair on many other vehicles. His response was to deny that Chrysler even had a transmission problem.

After a number of days, the zone service representative got involved through the dealer. He offered to pay for a small part of the repair, which was much less than others had received. When I asked to speak to the zone rep. personally, I was informed that customers were not allowed to speak to the zone reps. and that if I didn't quit complaining, he would ensure the Chrysler didn't pay anything.

I don't appreciate being threatened by Diamler Chrysler. I'm not surprised that they are currently loosing boat loads of money if this is the way they treat their customers. Most companies make a bad product once in a great while. How a company deals with their mistakes tell a lot about the character of that company. I, for one, will never purchase another Diamler-Chrysler product. Please do yourself a favor and avoid their products too. All they had was design. Now they are even loosing that.

FYI, the transmission blew out on my mother's Chrysler LHS also at 49K miles. She got a little better deal from her dealer (OH vs. AZ), but it was still difficult for her financially.

Strength:

It's comfortable and quiet. Virtually all the car magazines warn against the 2.4 liter four-cylinder because it's underpowered. I haven't found that to be the case. It won't get you off the line as fast as the six, but I am an aggressive driver and I never have a problem getting up to speed. It also cruises quietly at interstate speeds. Mileage is excellent, over 20 mpg highway, which the six can't do.

Weakness:

At 30,000 I'm having a brake problem--sounds like a spring or caliper is dragging. Stereo could be stronger.

I'd recommend the Voyager if you can't afford Japanese.

Compares favorably to a Toyota Previa which I drove a couple of years ago. Reliability-wise, it's too early to tell.

Strength:

Lots of room for our 4 kids, their friends, and their stuff. Comfortable, quiet, good gas mileage, reasonable price. Good value.

Weakness:

Transmission problems on our '97 voyager at 68,000 miles. Windsheild wipers went on whenever they wanted to.

I've been driving a 1999 Grand Voyager for one year. Not one problem so far. Recently, I've been comparison shopping with several other mini vans. None compare to the comfortable seats, smooth ride, and handling of the vehicle. After driving other vans, I've decided to stick with the Voyager. I love it.

Strength:

Size, very roomy, smooth ride, quick acelleration, rides and drives well.

Weakness:

Transmission, Transmission, Transmission, A/C compressor, paint.

The transmission has been replaced at least three times, repaired twice. The A/C system hardly ever works, the compressor was replaced twice during the warranty, and three times since. The ignition switch was replaced a couple of times. My husband keeps the service according to the manufacturers guidelines, however, there is something wrong vith this vehicle, almost every month. The money we've spent on repairs over the last five years, could have been used to purchase a new vehicle. We keep throwing good money after bad. I've owned four Toyota vehicles, and have not had any problems with them.(I'm on my fourth). The Chevy vehicles were also very satisfactory. My husbnd has vowed never to purchase another Chrysler product again.

Strength:

Reliability, I bought this minivan about 2 1/2 years ago. Not one problem with it. Knock on wood!
Lots of power, great in the winter with 4WD. Lots of space.

Weakness:

Do to the vehicle always being 4WD, it just inhales the gas.
The plastic moding is starting to come off in the interior.
The power window buttons are in a terrible place.

Overall I have injoyed this vehicle.
It is great for grocery shopping, trips, and great for those winter months.

Where to start? I love this car. Bought it new. Have put 150,000 miles on it. After research I choose the 3.3L engine, a good choice, VERY reliable with lots of pep when needed.
It holds lots of kids and stuff, especially with the movable rear seat.
I think it is good looking.
Back seat is comfortable to sleep in on long trips.
Gets great milage for a van.
AC is good.
Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it! We did put in a new transmission at 100,000 miles; my car-wise husband thoought he would beat the odds this way.
The LE seats are very comfortable, compared to the SE seats. Plus the power driver's seat is great! I will never go without it again!
Back area is easy to load.
Removable middle captain's chairs a plus when carrying the big family dogs to the vet.

Handles great.

Weakness:

None that I can think of

As you can see, the car has been very reliable for us and very functional.
We will probably get another one if this one ever dies, and hope that it is as good. I enjoy sitting up a little higher. It is easier to get in and out of, epecially as we get older!
