Strength:
IT has a good engine, 3.0 V6. Nothing other than oil changes and regular maintanance.
Weakness:
OEM tires are crap, as i had them go flat like 3 times, dealer sold us 4 off-road type winter tires that you would find on a jeep, or dodge ram and they havent gone flat or punctured. Mind you that it consumes a little more gasoline. This 1998 Plymouth Voyager is a good minivan. Since we started leasing it almost 3 years ago, we have only replaced the front brakes once. The OEM sound system sucked, it was just am/fm radio, no cass. Replaced it with a Clarion AM/FM CD player and replaced the OEm speakers with SOny. Van has been serviced as directed by owners book. Even with me, a 18 year old teenage male, it has been subjected to hard core conditions, and has yet to fail, I just pity the sore loser that buys it after the lease is up. Strength:
Space available for transporting people and items. I carry kids around with me quite often and space is great now. However, when they become older with longer legs, space will be tight. The seats are easy to remove, with help of another strong person. The space available when seats are removed is awesome. We have even hauled lumber and bags of sand in the back of the van. It has never left me stranded on the side of the road yet.
Weakness:
Air conditioner has not worked right since Spring. Replacing compressor has not helped. Air conditioner belts seem to fly off at inconvenient times. After replacing the compressor, belts continued to squall (especially didn't seem to like being on the highway). Have been advised to take it to Dealer now to see what is wrong with it. Have already put in over 1200 dollars in past three months on air conditioner and related service. When the belt flew off yesterday, it looked like it had been chewed up after only being on van for two weeks. Have found that the fan belt that is listed at all the stores that is suppose to fit this van, is not the right size one for it. Service engine light has been on since hitting 60K miles (30k miles ago). Friend that works at dealer said this was pre-set by Chrysler so you would have to come in and have it serviced so they could turn it off. I have had it in the shop many times because of recalls. While setting at dealer waiting for one of the recalls to be fixed, I talked to three other owners of this model. All were dissatisfied. All had the problem with the service engine light. All had their brakes replaced at least twice and had minor problems. I guess I should have known better about this van. We had it 2 weeks when we took it back to the shop. The child lock on the sliding door got stuck the first time we used it and the door would not open. This was a sign of things to come. Although ours has not had the transmission trouble I have seen listed, I expect that anytime. This minivan has been very useful for it's amount of space available for hauling people and "stuff" around. The ease at which seats can be removed is great. Unfortunately, there have been too many recalls on various items. There have been ongoing problems with small problems that are a nuisance - like the check engine light that never goes off. Recently it has been the air conditioner that has been giving us problems. Similar Products Used: I have never driven any other van but this one |

Strength:
This van can haul a lot of stuff, and the body holds up well as I have no rust.
Weakness:
Engine, Transmission, air conditioning and suspension are really weak I have had quite a few problems with my van. It is on it's third transmission, it has had the CV joints and boots replaced along with the front struts, it has had the air conditioning seals replaced twice.....and may I add it is not that hot in Canada. It now has 208,000 kms on it and it has a problem once again with the motor valve guides which were done once under the extended warranty and now the whole engine will have to be replaced at my cost this time. SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER, POWER STEERING STEERNG LINES ROT OUT, CRANK SENSOR QUITS. GREAT RIDE, COMFORTABLE, SLIGHTLY UNDERPOWERED WITH THE 3.3L TRANSMISSION SHIFT POINTS SEEM WIERD (4 SPEED OD AUTO). VERY HARD TO SERVICE ENGINE - WAY TOO TIGHT IN THE ENGINES SPACE. CHECK YOUR SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER - IF IT IS FROZEN REPLACE IT NOW - BOLT WILL SOON BREAK AND TAKE OUT POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY! HOPE THEY FIXED THESE WEAKNESSES IN LATER YEARS. Grand Voyager SE 3.3L-E85
Strength:
Fairly comfortable ride with lots of room and flexibility. Okay (not great) gas mileage of about 20 mpg on the road. This van is rated as 3.3L flex fuel E85 ethanol but has never had anything but regular unleaded gas in it. The mileage is about 4 mpg less than my 1994 Grand Voyager LE with the same engine.
Weakness:
1) The heating/cooling system does the job but it seems I have to continually turn it up or down in both hot and cold weather. 2) At about 30,000 miles the transmission is making wierd noises when cold, after a few minutes it is okay. 3) The seats are far better than a new Honda but not as good as my old '94 Grand Voyager LE. 4) Mediocre sound system I purchased this van new almost 3 years ago and now have 32,500 miles on it with 3.3L / E85 fuel engine. It replaced another Chrysler product, a 1994 Grand Voyager LE 3.3L with 55,000 miles. The 1999 SE is okay but I was happier with my old van. Neither of the vans have had the infamous transmission problems, however on the 1999, the speed sensor which sends signals to the transmission, failed at 28,000 -the dealership fixed it under warranty in less than an hour. This is not a bad vehicle at all even though I am somewhat less than 100% satisfied. I have been considering a new minivan however they all seem to have some strong negatives so I may just hang on until the 2003's come out as the 2002's are about like the 2001's??? My next van "may" be a Chrysler product...they are still the Minivan King and sales leader but with lots of room for improvement. Similar Products Used: 94-Grand Voyager LE had better seats, less trouble, better heating/cooling and higher overall satisfaction. Honda Vans: have very uncomfortable seats, no trip computer (which I have come to love) and a minimum of 4 months waiting to pay full list price; I shutter to think of ever driving 500 miles in one day behind the wheel of a Honda. Chevrolet Astro: The worst of the mini-vans. Chevrolet Express Luxury Van: A very nice vehicle if 13 miles per gallon does not concern you and you buy the maintence contract before driving it off the lot. Toyota Sienna: Much too small for my needs. |

Grand Voyager LE
Strength:
Handling, mileage (23.5), spacious, dual sliding doors, versatility.
Weakness:
Emergency brake has some issues. Brakes seem a little soft. Nothing else at all. I bought this van used with just over 40,000 miles. I have added 55,000 miles in less than 18 months and have had zero problems except for a battery that died in the hot weather last week. Many of the reviews below make me feel either very lucky or scared to death of what I can look forward to. I love the fact that it drives like a car, but can carry seven plus luggage for trips. It is economical enough for my commute, but strong enough to trailer my boat to the lake every weekend. I will always buy American cars and NEVER buy Japanese. Perhaps Chrysler has a consistency problem rather than systematic failure. Similar Products Used: I had an '88 Caravan that I bought new. It had many problems around the 40 - 75 K miles range, then few major problems until I traded it at 267,000 miles. Even the transmission lasted over 200,000 miles. I never put a muffler on it at all in 12 years. |
