Weakness:

MARKED TENDENCY TO HYDROPLANE

This has been a reliable car except for its unsafe tendency to lose traction when going through even shallow puddles of water. I have excellent tires, and the car holds a curve well in dry weather. However, in water, in slides and spins even if travelling in a straight line when hitting the water.

Model Reviewed: Pontiac TransSport SE 3800

Strength:

Great style, smooth ride and very responsive handling, auto-adjusting suspension, stainless exhaust, plastic body doesn't dent or rust and paint still looks like new, stereo controls on steering wheel, 3800 V-6 is "bullet proof", very powerful and gives very decent gas mileage. Rear air compressor is handy, electric sliding passenger door is great. Resale value of this car is quite high, yet some real bargains exist in the market - only buy a well maintained TransSport or any other minivan! Maintain it well and it will treat you well........ This "Sport Utility Van" will last 200K-300K miles if you take care of it from the start.

Weakness:

Front edge of dashboard is coming unglued from heat of the sun - hasn't cracked yet. Heater vent on front passenger will toast your feet when turned up high in cold weather - GM needs to make this adjustable. Battery runs down quickly if interior lights left on (GM fixed this in '96 as I understand - needs a way to retrofit). Rear spark plugs very difficult to reach - make SURE your mechanic is honest and replaces them - we use the Bosch-4 premium platinum plugs and LOVE them. No way to lock the gas cap or filler door. It is easy to whack yourself in the head with the long point top corner of the door when you open it in a hurry and don't get out of the way (GM put a bright yellow warning sticker in this area - but it still HURTS when you get whacked). Plastic interior trim might be better, but no real problems.

The '94-'96 TransSport SE is STILL the sexiest, sportiest, best looking minivan on the planet! The plastic body cladding doesn't rust and the paint looks just like new after 7 years (washed, no wax). The plastic body does not dent and bounces right back from most impacts. The 3800 V-6 is very powerful and extremely reliable with 20-24 mpg @ 80 mph+. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and handles the power well. We got the optional towing package with auto-adjusting air shocks and rear air compressor which has been very handy! We have towed very heavy trailers and the car sits LEVEL, brakes well and has power to pull the hills. The anti-lock brakes are excellent and stop this vehicle well, even with a load. The auto-seal General tires didn't impress me much, and I replaced them at 40K miles with B.F. Goodrich T/A lettered 60-series radials, oversize, and siped. It still has a very smooth ride, but now it handles more like a sports car! The siping on these wide tires give superior traction on ice and in rain and wet snow, and I haven't found anywhere that I cared to go in the snow that they didn't take me with ease. I HIGHLY recommend these tires for any TransSport. The 7-passenger seating with 5 individual seats easily removeable and stored was important in our purchase decision. The two outboard center row seats have built-in child seats which are very handy for the grand children. The standard roof rack has come in handy on occasion too. In standard configuration, 7 rode very comfortably on a 2,000 mile vacation and the air conditioning kept us comfortable in 110 degree driving. With the rear seats removed and more than 48" of cargo width, I can haul plywood and sheetrock, and I don't need my old Chevy van to do projects with. We LOVE the electric passenger side door, and can even control it from the dashboard. The stock brakes lasted almost 85,000 miles - unreal for a GM vehicle. We maintain the vehicle very well, the motor is treated to Mobile 1 synthetic oil & filter every 3K miles - this is the secret of making this engine last "forever"! With a stainless steel exhaust system, we don't expect any problems in that area. Our van was purchased at model year end and has the moon roof and the radio with ALL controls in the steering wheel. Once you have had this feature, you will never want to buy a vehicle without it!

Strength:

decent milage, 23 to 27 mpg. the engine is a workhorse, my van has 250k+ miles on the odometer and still counting light easily removable seats great view out the windshield

Weakness:

front side windows(between the door and windshield)frame provides a great blind spot, I have almost pulled out in front of a few cars.

I bought this van while looking for a truck or suv. While car shopping I took this thing for a ride and I was hooked. Peppy engine! passes like a car. Its interior room is great and I have turned my van into a four wheel tackle box, plenty of room for an overhead rod rack, and also lots of tackle storage. It is a wonderful versatile vehicle. I never want to give it up. I think I will keep it up til it implodes.

Bougjt this van with 23,000 miles. It now has 162K and counting. I love it and hate to part with it. But little things are starting to go... We haven't had any major problems with it. Had to have brake work and frost plugs replaced, that's about it.

Strength:

Plastic body, advantage is that metal expands and contracts with changes in temperature. Plastic has a greater tolerance which keeps the paint in superb conditions. No wax needed. Interior seats are easily removed, installed and are light.

Weakness:

Poor front visability, problem especially for women who have difficulty in estimating distance from objects.

Great movements, powerful 3.8 motor, double air conditioning units, handy automatic sliding door, rear air shocks (compensates for additional weight.) Looks new, nobody believes it to be so old.

fit and finish of interior trim parts. Can't use a automatic toll transponder in these vans due to windshield coating (blocks signal)

purchased from family friend with 150,000 highway miles on it. Runs great, started easily on coldest days. Has common dashboard separation problem from heat.Have replaced rack & pinion, alternator and resprayed the fading roof paint. Absolutely love coming out of the carwash with a 12 year old van that looks like new. 3.1 engine is adequate as long as you dont have too many people in the vehicle. I also purchased a 95 Olds Silouette with 3800 engine for road trips. It has 82,000 on it and no problems to report. Added a hitch and pull a small trailer with it. If they have been well maintained from the start, they will last a long time.

Horiible turning radious, mediocre red line lever

This car is the cream of the crop when it comes to a van. First of all i cant stand then and when my mom said that she was giving me it I was like "EWWW" Though with time I grew to like its space age hood and window. I love the power that the engine gives. With a 3.8 liter V6 its still the most powerstuff minivan ever made.
