Strength:

Power, torque, wonderfully smooth 6-speed transmission. Beautiful paint. Excellent handling at the limit.

Weakness:

Very unreliable and expensive to maintain. The joy of driving the car was more then offset by the expense of ownership.

As said above, poor reliability killed the fun of ownership. ABS failed under warrantee (otherwise >$3000). Water pump leak ($250 just for the pump) dripped down onto the $300 crankfire ignition. Cylinder head exhaust studs breaking off - why? Motor temperature always a little too high, no matter the outside temperature. Sun visor falling in my lap. Buttons breaking off even though I babied it. Squeeks and rattles.

I feel like I gave GM a chance and they let me down. Whenever I now see a Camaro/Firebird, instead of thinking, "nice cars", I think, "wonder how long before they get rid of it."

Similar Products Used:

1990 Mustang GT. Something of an alter-ego for the Z28. Bad paint, lousy transmission, good engine, and handling? If it ever got sideways on you, count on a viscious snap-back. Now, having said that, it was very very reliable. NEVER in the dealership, even once.

Model Reviewed: Camaro V6

Strength:

Solid acceleration - Maybe not for racing, but any and all situations on the road that are solved with a little pedal to the metal are quick and clean. And when you're in a foul mood and just want to floor it, that awesome torque jerks you back in your seat for the ride. Maybe I can't handle a V8 of anything, but I sure as hell can have some fun on my own.

Superb brakes - I've had all too many morons jump in front of me, well, for the hell of it I assume. One right when I was taking an exit off the highway...gave me about two seconds to slam the brakes! Thankfully, my car delivered with a perfect stop in time, and has continued to do so this day. I would go so far as to say this is *the* best feature of the car. The brakes perform admirably even in poor conditions - I've only had them noticably slip once, though that was on a steep decline RIGHT after it rained. A lesser car probably would have mowed through that intersection I was stopping for.

Low Maintenance - what few problems I've had with the car so far were actually my doing, or cause by the fact that my Camaro has 160k miles on it now.

Beautiful - Despite the fact that my car is getting old and beat down, I still get compliments on it every time someone sees it. The look of the car is still simply gorgeous, even after all these years - a lot better than the new models as well, might I add.

Great Handling - Rain, Snow, I've put my car through everything, and it handles it all well. My friend always likes to make deriding comments about my V6(he has a '98 Mustang GT), but when I watched his car spin out every time he pushed down on the accelerator(I'm not kidding), I felt a newfound respect for my car's superb control.

Nice stereo system - The stereo that the car came with is still in here, for very good reasons. It sounds gorgeous - not too surprising since it IS a Bose system - and pumps out the music with power. The bass practically has the whole car vibrating when jacked up, and distortion only comes in at the highest levels.

Weakness:

Terrible visibility - There isn't too much of a problem with seeing cars, but seeing YOUR car's distance to it is hell. I've had two mini-accidents, where I just tapped the guy in front of me, and both would have been easily avoided with just some semblance of your front corners in view.

As mentioned by others, its a tight fit in the back - REAL tight. No backseat glory for the teenager here, although a bad back isn't out of the question.

If you're a pack rat, your trunk will last you.... No space here, but so long as you don't have friends to pick up at the airport, there shouldn't be any major problems.

Someone else mentioned this, and it bears repeating: don't even kid yourself with being a do-it-yourself mechanic here...everything is designed in such pointless, unnecessary and difficult ways that even changing the damned turn signal is hell.

Although I can't recommend buying a car as old as mine(unless, of course, its what you can afford), I would heartily recommend this car for anyone who needs a good, solid car for the daily commute, and would like the occasional speed burst. Performance wise, the Camaro is great, its only flaws are the minor and moderate details, which can make it annoying. But if you keep your distance from other cars and take it to a mechanic rather than try to fix it yourself, you'll have a joy ride until its time to pick up the next car.

'98 Mustang GT - I've driven my friends' car a couple times, and might I be the first to say I never, ever want to drive it again. Its uncomfortable as hell, the ride is unbelievably bumpy, and there's just the feeling that *something* is wrong, although you're not quite sure what.

'98 Miata - Zero power and a VERY tight fit. Give me my excessively large Camaro any day.

'96 Mustang - This one is actually better than the other Mustang. Its fairly comfortable, not bumpy at all and is fun to drive. It lacks power, however, and taking it for a ride down a deserted road leaves you wanting.

'94 Celica GT - Can you say *yawn* - this car is slow as hell, and I can't take it anymore. It was comfortable and smooth, but slamming the pedal only meant you spent more gas. It also had a wide variety of technical faults. Asta la vista, thank god.

just stock 305...but has lots power. Looks really good, mint body,T-tops don't leak, PANTY DROPPER, this care is really fine, runs 1/4 mile in 15.7, green gray metallic paint w/ gray/black interior.....niicccee

Weakness:

could use a stronger engine, it has a few miles on it(124,000mi), but still beats mustangs, only problem... too heavy it weighs 4,200 lbs., rear-end is really light, done many 360's without meaning to.

I think this is the best body style Camaro around other than a 69, but, I really like the car and haven't spent much money on it to keep it running. I have had to replace the radiator and water pump but that is it. I'm going to put a 350 in it with about 450 HP and get a new hood, Z-28 spoiler, new gears, and chrome 5 star wheels. It will be the finest Camaro I have ever seen when I get done with it. Already has Flowmaster exaust, no cats, and 3 inch pipes, sounds really good.

My Camaro Z-28 handled like a champ. This car was unbelievable around sharp turns. The original owner garage kept it and the paint was like new. This car took a stock 5.0 mustang no problem. I would buy it again if I could find one in this year and model.

Weakness:

it didnt really have many weaknesses but one. It has a bad weight distribution and is horrible in the rain and ice. That is how I ultimaetly totaled my car. I hit a patch of black ice and went sideways into a telephone pole nearly killing four of my friends. If you do buy a Camaro, leave it home in bad weather.

I would recomend this car for your second or third car. it is a powerful car with a 305 v-8. If you find one that has been taken care of buy it they are very reliable and fun.

Strength:

The speed is great! i love pulling up to a red light just knowing if i want to give the guy next to me a run for his money, i could. The looks are as sleck as hell!!! My T-Tops are just mocking those ratty mustangs. The fog lights are slick, the shifting is very smooth and the clutch is is just screaming to be hammered on by my foot.

Weakness:

The rear-end is way to light. In nasty weather you can fish tail very easily.

Dont let the V-6 make you think it has no power. If you were to floor the beast, than you would see smoke out the rear view mirror. I would much rather have the V-8 but i am not worried about that yet. The 3 keys on owning a Camaro: 1) American muscle 2) even with 90,000+ miles on it, the car runs like new 3) GIRLS PLAY WITH PONYS.....nough said.

I absolutly love the Delco Bose stereo. It has a lot of power off the line for a 3.8L V6. So far I've been able to hang with my friend's 1995 Firebird Formula. I was really suprised that I was hanging with an LT1. The T-tops are a great feature. They're much better than a convertible. Great gas mileage.

Weakness:

Personally I don't like that I don't have power windows and locks. But I really don't care.

This is hands down the best car I've ever driven. It is a great car that's sporty, fast, and safe.
