320hp LS1, 6-speed trans., exhaust sound and stereo controls on the steering wheel

Weakness:

long strange windshield, attracts a lot of attention from cops

So far the car is great. I haven't had it very long. I bought mine in bright red, I get a lot of people stopping to look and comment on it. At the same time, not a single cop misses me when I drive by. The new 17" 10-spoke wheels really look good also. The 320hp LS1 has lots of torque and will bark the tires in 2nd and 3rd gears. The handling is pretty good. The 6-speed transmission is lots of fun, especially when you're blasting through curves and corners. You have a gear for each one. The long windshield takes a little getting used to. However, for the price (about 20k more for a new Corvette convertible), you can't beat the top-down fun you have with this car.

Strength:

The brute horsepower of this car is unreal! It has great styling (read that as clean lines) and handles very well right off of the lot. I picked this car up used, and wish I would have ordered one my way. It is a real head turner, and as for those mushtangs, well, they just cower when they see this car coming. Almost every time I'm at a stop light, people pull up and revv their motors. Gosh, I wonder why? :) After it goes out of warranty, I plan on doing some upgrading to get it to 400hp at the rear wheel. That's the nice thing about this car. You can do a lot of performance upgrades without doing major modifications.
-Performance

Weakness:

I wish I had a six speed. The interior could use a little help (black on white gages, no digital stuff at all). The "ASR" feature is a waste! Why do you want auto slip reduction on a sports car?

It cost me 26K to get it in my garage, but was worth it. I didn't even think about a mushtang. I did debate between the SS and a Ram Air T/A, but decided I didn't really care for the T/A's styling. This is a fun, powerful car. Too bad Chevy's too stupid to keep it in production...

Strength:

For what you get, it really is a bargain: Unbelievable styling, enough power for most (plenty of torque), impressive handling, surprising gas mileage with the 5 speed manual (I've actually managed to get 35mpg on a 300 mile trip), Monsoon stereo sounds great (for a factory package), and the list goes on. I got mine loaded with every option except T-Tops and leather for $19k and with GMAC financing of only 3.9%, drove away without any regrets.

Weakness:

It's size and weight can make it a little cumbersome. It's easy to scrape on driveways with the amount of nose protruding in front of the tires. The wide doors (though a necessity when accessing the back seat), coupled with the already wide stance, make finding a good parking space difficult. Sure it may be impossible to see the car's corners, but it only takes a little while to adapt. Downward visibility is limited, but adjust the mirrors right and you can almost eliminate any blind spots. The seats could use more lateral and lumbar support.

I envy all you SS owners out there! This was my first new car right out of college and I just couldn't afford the payments or insurance for a V8. It's definitely a good start into the muscle car arena...I just hope GM will continue making Camaros long enough for me to afford an SS.

I stated earlier that the size/weight was a weakness, but it's also a big plus: this car is solid and remains planted firmly on the asphalt at higher speeds. I also feel a lot safer in a car this size with all the large truck/SUV owners out there. When my Camaro was only 3 months old, I was rear-ended by a late model Ford F150 (I was stopped and the truck hit me doing about 35-40mph). Though the damage was extensive ($6000+), the car was still 100% drivable (even the rear window and tail lights remained intact). A smaller car would have been shoved several feet forward (hitting the car stopped ahead of me), it would have been totaled and I wouldn't have escaped injuries.

In just over 2 years and 17k miles, I have had only one thing break: a windshield wiper. Other than that, I've only had to take it in for warranty work twice for very minor repairs and have received no grief from the dealer. Although, I do suspect the brake rotors may be slightly warped.

If you're in the market for a sports car, I would take a serious look at the Camaro (or it's twin, the Pontiac Firebird). In a day when it's easy to spend $15,000 on a little econo-box, a car like the Camaro for less than $20,000 is a bargain.

I've driven my friend's 98 Mustang Cobra. What can I say...it's a ~300HP V8 vs. a 200HP V6. At the low end (below 2000 RPM), the two engines don't feel all that different. Come 3000 RPM, the Mustang's power starts increasing rapidly while the V6 in my Camaro starts leveling off. But overall, I still like mine better. The Camaro's interior is less cramped (especially the pedals) and more ergonomic.

Strength:

styling, power(for a v6), precise steering

Weakness:

seats don't back up far enough, hard to see car's corners

This is my brother's car, and I drive it around as much as I drive my car, so I have a pretty good feel for it.

The V6 engine is quite powerful, and is enough for most people out there. The 5-speed manual transmission works very well, and I have never missed a shift with it. The car is no Z28, but is quite fast. The t-tops are a wonderful compromise between the closed top of the coupe and the much more expensive and less that perfect convertible. The gas economy isn't as good as I read about, but that's probably because both my brother and I drive pretty aggressively.

The very slanted windshield and hood make it very difficult to see the edges of the car, making parking all but a nightmare. The high rear also makes backing out of that same parking space difficult! The very large doors and almost lying down seating position make it a little difficult to get into and out of.

This is a very good car for anyone who feels the need to have a pretty fast car that looks lightning fast, but doesn't want to shell out the extra bucks for a V8 that is much less economical.

Even though it's just a v6, the growl of the engine still makes me grin. GM's engineers must have spent some time making this car sound so good. I got a manual to get some acceleration - much to my girlfriend's regret... Love the functionality of the fold-down rear seat.

Weakness:

I must confess that I worry about the quality; the brakes started squealing at 9000 (hwy) miles. It takes a long time before the car asks for an oil change, and that makes me nervous. Don't park under trees during autumn - smaller leaves will slide right into the air vents.

I got an almost-loaded v6 coupe for 17k brand new. So far it's been a good value, but I still yearn for an SS (about 10k more). The monsoon stereo system is nice, but not great. Living in michigan, I'm thinking about switching to a mitsubishi for the all-wheel drive/steering.

If you want an affordable sports car that's fun to drive you should definitely consider the camaro.

Strength:

This car has a great engine and is very fast. The handling is tight unless on a bumpy road. The "monsoon" stereo is more than adequate for the average person. It can run with Vette for about $15,000 less!

Weakness:

The headlights could be a bit stronger. Besides that, it is awesome!

Overall, this car is a blast to drive! It takes off like a rocket and handles great. It definetly turns heads as you pass other, slower cars. It is hard to get this much performance for the price. I paid $31,000 for it with every option SLP offered. The gas mileage in town isn't too good(17 mpg), but it does get about 27 mpg on the highway. The 6-speed is a joy to use. Overall, I would absolutely recommend the Camaro SS to anyone.

need some minor refining. the plastic rear windows turns yellow with time and cracks. because there is no roof the twist and flexs considerably.

if i was to buy another camaro- i would definitly same up my money and wait a couple of year and buy a camaro that came with the LT-1 or the LS-1 motor.. In another words the tune port injeted engine that came in my '91 produced only 195hp.... the car's a dog of the line!

I am 53 years old and this is my FIRST American car purchase...I bought a
black T-top v-6 automatic in January and I am VERY pleased. It is very quick, gets 28+ mph on a trip. Feels very solid. Corners well. Comfortable
seats. Love the T-Top better than sunroof's I have had. Love the utility
of the hatchback.

Weakness:

shallow trunk.

I paid $19,500 through CarsDirect.com and they even delivered it to my door.
This car is undervalued and outperforms more expensive cars such as
Celica, new Mitsubishi sports car,Honda Prelude et al.

My previous cars were Honda Accord, Toyota MR 2, Probe, Mazda.
I strongly recommend this car.
