Strength:

This car is pretty quick. It has a lot of torque and is ok to drive. The interior isn't too bad and the seats are faily supportive

Weakness:

GM quality. This car isn't as fast as they say. The six speed is a marketing gimmic. I get beat by lightly moded stangs all day long

Well, this car is ok but I sold my stang for this and it was not worth it at all! The stang offers a lot more drivabilty and lets you feel the road. A 96+ Cobra will beat my car badly and do so with a little 281 ci. I should have kept my stang!!!!!

Strength:

Great straight line acceleration, cheap parts, very reliable.

Weakness:

The only complaint that I have is the lack of handling. This may improve on the Z28 model with stiffer springs and better tires. I wish the car had independent suspension (I guess I dream of a corvette someday!)

Ok, I bought this car used in 1988, it was a GM exec's daughters summer car, only 13,00 kms, one year old. Now the car has 287,000 kms and still going strong. I've repainted it once and it looks great. I love the t-tops, it still has reasonable pickup, and because my model is a 5.0L V8, 4BBL Carb, its quite easy to tune up yourself. I've replaced the alternator, radiator, belts and hoses, the power antenna broke so I replaced that, the automatic trunk mechanism is garbage too... but that's it, Those things together amounted to 500 bucks in repairs over 12 years. Not bad.

I'm still driving it and fully expect to reach 500,000 before I give her up...

Keep it up Chev.

Its a big american sports car. It compares well to all of these types of cars, better than its asian counterparts for cheap repairs and acceleration, but worse for handling almost always.

Model Reviewed: / Camaro SS

Strength:

Excellent acceleration, speed, braking and handling. I have pulled 28 mpg (6 spd). The looks on the new model are classic, not all gody like the Pontiacs (and let's not even discuss the Ford product). With a couple of modifications (subframe connectors - Kenny Brown $225) the car is squeakless and handles flawlessly. I have the SLP Y2Y options as well as headers, Y-pipe, nitrous, gauges, brake upgrades, etc. I keep it looking stock and performing great. I recommend black with chrome ZR1 wheels. I have driven a lot of fast cars and for the dollar you CANNOT beat a Camaro SS for looks and street performance.

Weakness:

Cheap interior (cup holders are nice) and it had a few fit and finish problems. Champion Chevrolet in Houston fixed it perfectly! The rotors warped (the brakes overpower rotors - get some cross-drilled $240) and should be recalled.

Bought it perfect with 500 miles on it. Sticker was near $34,000. I paid $24,500. Awesome deal, never heard of one better. And I bought it from a police officer. Buy a Corvette only if you want the better interior, an independent rear suspension and you like it's looks better. There are no other reasons (well, knowing you have that cool hydro-formed frame is pretty cool).

Similar Products Used:

1991 Camaro RS V8 (Should have changed the name, nothing in common)
1993 Corvette 40th Anniversary - nice car, starting to show age, not as tight as Camaro - much slower. Handling at least as good with FX3 suspension.
1970 Chevelle SS454 LS6 - faster than a new LS1, but it's not a pony car and can't handle. If you are considering both cars, you must be confused.

Model Reviewed: Camaro SS Convertible

Strength:

Awesome acceleration, lots of torque, excellent handling and brakes, quality of the canvas top, mileage, excellent transmission (T56), price, though it has a sport suspension the ride is fairly smooth.

Weakness:

Front seats (headrests too low), insurance premium is a bit high.

I would definitely recommend it. The price is excellent
considering the performance. The reputation the car has
with many people is undeserved. It is a true Gran Turismo,
a sports car you want

Strength:

Accleration. SS model does 0-60 in like 5.5 seconds! For what it's priced thats some explosive preformance!

Weakness:

No weakness. This car rules.

I would defenatlly recomend it. I look foward to buying one. I have liked this car for years but espically for the last 2 for some reason. Don't want to pay the price of a Corvette but want the preformance. Go for the Camaro.

The Corvette. It's almost just as fast for a fraction of the price.

Strength:

I have an '86 model with a 5.0 liter engine (by far the oldest model reviewed here). I bought this car used when i turned 16 and i have abused it for eight years, racking up 145,000 miles. This car has never left me stranded even though I might change the oil every 8,000 miles and don't do any other type of preventive maintenance. I have only had to do minor repairs such as replace hoses and switches. I know that these cameros are not known for their reliability, but I guess I must have gotten lucky because this car lasted me through high school and college without letting me down.
So, I would say the strengths are these:
-reliable, never let me down yet.
-economical, when repairs are absolutely necessary, parts are plentiful and cheap
-it has pretty good pick-up and I loved passing my friends in their Accords and SUVs.
-Not too bad on gas and because it is such an old car, insurance is manageble.

Weakness:

Its pretty big and rather ugly. Paint is almost gone now and it has a symphony of bangs and rattles. It leaks and knocks and smokes and stutters, but keeps running!
So, weaknesses are as follows:
-its old and ordinary looking compared to new Celicas and Preludes (not exactly a chick magnet)
-where are the breaks? The breaks lock up way too easily.
-Suspension could use some work and the back end gets loose on quick turns
-not really fast considering it has a 305ci engine with a 4 barrel carb, but has good torque.

In 1991 I paid $4500. A couple of months ago I retired the Camero to one day becoming a hot rod project and bought a '94 Honda Passport (can you say "lemon," the Passport uses more oil in a week than the Camero ever did). I wouldn't recommend one now because you cannot find a Camero this old that hasn't been tortured, but I have enjoyed my experience with one.

I've driven all of my friends Mustangs, Preludes, Accords and SUVs and while I was jealous of their newer rides, somehow my beat-up Camero has outlasted almost all of their cars.

Strength:

great looks (navy blue w/ beige top & beige leather interior), excellent power, decent handling - all in all- amazingly fun to drive (especially in the summer w/ the top down

Weakness:

I've had a few problems w/ mine and I've not even had it one year- brake rotors were warped, a spring in the convertible top broke, the driver's side power mirror got hosed, and the serpentine belt needs replacing- all before 20k miles...
but I think its just bad luck and after these problems are over it should be better, because in general Camaros get decent reliability ratings...

I bought mine in May '99 for 30,500 - 1st all- this is way too much to pay for the car- I paid this because I didn't have the time to order one from the factory, and the only one close to what I wanted was over 500 miles away and not quite equipped the way I wanted it- so I paid extra for the accessories department at the dealer to properly equip it... and they charged me full MSRP because they were a losing a sales person for 2 days (he had to drive to Maryland and bring the car back to Georgia)... anyhow- despite the fact I paid too much, its worth every penny- the car has an amazing bang for the buck value... the only sports car w/ a similarly amazing amount of performance for the money would be a Vette (which I plan to buy next... or maybe a used '95 RX-7...) I wish mine were more reliable though as its been in the shop twice, and is going back soon - for repairs not covered under warrantee- a new belt and re-machining broke rotors- which should not have to be done w/in a year :(
When I have to pay money, beyond the high monthly payments and insurance, its depressing since the car is less than a year old, but its so much fun to drive- everytime its nice out and I take her for a spin down the highway w/ the top down, it makes it all worth it.

Model Reviewed: Z28

Strength:

Power to spare! The Z28 has more power than you really need except on the drag strip, but when you want to pass or get on the Highway, there is no substitute for the raw power of that LT1!
Style: The Camaro says it all, people still turn their head and look at the car even after seeing this body style for seven years.
Maintenance: It's been in the shop only twice in the seven years I have owned this car.

Weakness:

Home mechanic? I dont think so! You WILL draw blood and lose some skin when you try to work on this engine, the spark plugs are extremely hard to get to and even simple maintenance will cause a few cuss words to utter from your lips.
Room: The back seats are there for looks because unless you are putting some very small people back there, it makes for a good luggage area. The trunk cant really be called a trunk, I've seen glove compartments larger than this!
Visibility: Ok, you really dont want to be looking out of anything but the front windshield because you really cant see out of the rest of the car. Consider anything outside of your frontal view as a total blind spot. But isnt that what power is for, just floor it and leave everyone else behind!

I paid the price for this car. I bought my 93 Z28 when they very first came out and it was one of the first one's in Southern California at the time. I was a little amazed at the amount of times I was visiting the gas station, but after the first time I got pulled over by a CHP JUST so he could check out the car, I knew I had bought the right car. It's seven years old now, and has over 121 thousand miles (Just got my first tune up!) on it but it still goes like it was brand new and the body has withstood some really bad weather over the years (I had it in Scotland for 3 years, the ONLY one in Scotland, THAT was a blast!) You can not beat the bang for the buck with the Z28 and the new models are even faster! Why would Chevy ever think of dropping this line, maybe because enough people just havent realized how much fun this car really can be!

Similar Products Used:

78 Camaro, loved the car but it only had a 305. I ran this car with minimal problems for almost 10 years.
66 Corvett Coupe (Duntov 327) Ok, there is really now comparison here, but the power of the Z28 reminds me of that car!
