Strength:

I always told myself that I could never own a V6 Camero. That all changed when I test drove the "97. At 51K miles, the car is still very strong. Great off the line! Good power at higher MPH, great for lane changing. For the mostpart, the inside is very comfortable. The factory CD player and speakers crank!! The stereo automatically adjusts its volume according to the speed - very handy when the T-Tops are off!!! Plenty of leg room, I feel like I'm laying on the floor - just the way a sports car should be in my opinion. Can you say "BABE MAGNET"?? Gas mileage is excellent as well (30+/- mpg)

Weakness:

The seatbelts are somewhat uncomfortable, and the corners are difficult to see which makes parking a bit of a task. I've cracked my head on the roof-rail 4 times in 3 days getting in and out... but no pain, no gain right? As far as available seating; plenty of room up front for two. In the rear, there is room for two of your closest midget friends... assuming they didn't eat a big dinner. Overall - Nothing major to report.

Very pleased so far!! The car is a blast to drive! The T-Tops are so easily removed and stored, it's a crime not to take them off. I'll check back and post another message after a catback upgrade and 15,000 miles.

Compared to my 1968 Camero SS, the "97 makes up for its lack of character with modern ametities like "power everything" (brakes, steering, windows, locks, doors, mirrors, and seats). Can't match the "68s power, but it's much more drivable.

Strength:

Great looks, power, drivability. 4 wheel ABS, 16" wheels, and front/rear sway bars round out a super platform.

Weakness:

Plastic around the speakers rattles a little. Easily fixed.

I owned a '87 Porsche 924S since '92 and went through years of pain, pride, joy, high insurance, high maint $$$ and on, and on..... Fun car but very expensive for what you got. The Camaro, on the other hand, is a conventional layout (front engine/trans, straight rear axel), more comfortable and easier to maintain. Many of the things that attracted people away to foreign built cars are now standard on US cars. 4 wheel disks and ABS, aluminum rocker covers, and overall better engine sealing (no leaks) and super engine performance for a six are all qualities of the new Camaro. Now, the Camaro is not set up like the Porsche and really isn't a direct compairison. That said, the Camaro is very well suited to duty on US roads. Here in Kansas, we're primarily running on straight, flat roads (go figure). Also, the speeds are held to 80 or so on the turnpike. Not 140 on the autobahn. Combined with extensive city driving, the requirements for different spring rates and a higher engine tourqe rating is a better match to US roads and daily driver chores.

Similar Products Used:

Previously owned a Porsche 924S. The Camaro is much bigger and has different ride characteristics due to its upper and lower "A" arms in front vs. the struts. The main attraction of the Camaro is that parts are readily available and inexpensive.

Strength:

The frame is pretty solid, EVERYTHING built on it from there on up is CRAP

Weakness:

EVERYTHING, read the overall impression to see what I mean! It's time for GM to wake up and smell the coffee, customer satisfaction and product reliability are more important than maximum profits! Hell, I wouldnt have minded paying an extra 3 or 4 grand for my truck if they put that money towards using QUALITY parts and not stuff out of the local preschool's toy bin!

I bought this truck a little over a year ago, since then I've had nothing but stupid things go wrong with it. The whole rig caught on fire in my garage in november '00 due to a wiring problem but was quickly put out and only 8k worth of damage was done and it was fixed rather than replaced. Besides that little problem (sarcasm) nothing major YET but this thing just feels like it's a time bomb waiting to explode, probably right after my warranty goes out. My biggest problem with it is the BUILD QUALITY. EVERYTHING on this truck rattles, squeeks, groans, squeels, and shakes for no reason. I like how the tranny realizes the motor has enough torque and doesn't downshift every time you touch the gas, but the tranny itself does not feel quality. Sometimes the shifts are really mushy, sometimes they are really hard, no consistancy and not really based on how the truck is being driven either. When it shifts into second EVERY time it makes a high pitched squeel for 1/2 a second like a belt come loose, which speaking of, the belts squeel for 30 seconds when the truck has been sitting for more than 12 hours cold. It's so embarrasing for people to see that happen in your brand new truck and they get in their reliable little 15 year old imports and drive away as quite and solid as can be. Should I continue? Sometimes the starter all together refuses to work, the catalytic converter lets out a high pitch whining noise while cruising at partial throttle around 1.8k-2k rpms. Somewhere in the suspension system in the front right wheel well rattles every time I go over a speed bump or pothole or anything. Did I mention every time the darn truck even MOVES the whole dash rattles and vibrates like its about to fall off? I have taken it apart to install an aftermarket stereo system since the one in the truck to begin with SUCKS and the whole thing is practically hollow with a few rusted metal parts here and there, but it is 95% hard plastic, about 1/10th of an inch thick. The kind of plastic they make squirt guns out of, not real plastic.
Oh lets not forget steering, lots of problems with that, before the truck even got off the lot it made a very high pitch noise that sounded like a belt or something every time the steering was turned to the right, bad steering pump, then the steering wheel sounded like a rubber eraser on a chalk board every time it was turned a few months later, bad bearings in the steering column. Did I mention the driverside airbad spontaneously deplolyed while the truck was sitting still? The seats are horrible quality, the cloth feels like denim in texture and satin in durability, the whole seat squeeks like a whimpering dog every time I get in and out.
Wind noise is horrible, road noise is as well, I spent 1500 bucks on sound deadeners and now it sounds about EQUAL to that of my trucks '97 toyota truck. The interior and exterior scratches and dents VERY easily. I never had a single blemish on the interior of any of my cars, now my truck has scratches (some a centimeter deep) all over the interior plastic, I am NOT that rough with it, the crap they use just has no durability whatsoever. Oh, replaced two sets of daytime running lights, has anybody noticed that the silverados have more burnt out lights out of any other car on the road. No joke I once pulled up to a 4-way stop and the other 3 trucks were 99+ silverados like mine any all 3 of them had a burnt out daytime running light, one had both burnt out. It seems like about one out of 3 99+ silverados I see on the road has a burnt out daytime running light and that's not an exageration, keep an eye out on the road and see for yourself. I must admit, they extremely easy to change though, so they must have thought that was a good enough excuse to put nightlights in for the daytime lights. :(
Please do yourself a favor and buy an F-150, or even better, a Toyota truck, or something japanese anyway. At least the japanese actually care about the quality of their products.
By the way, I had similar experiences with my '94 Z28 camaro, so chevrolet is sworn off my list for good!

well built, looks, performance, feel safe, very reliable, good sound system.Gas is great on this car for a V8 THE BEST THING IS YOU GET TO EMBARRASS MUSTANGS, THEY FEAR MY CAR AND I LOVE IT.

Weakness:

not easy to work on-plugs are barried in the engine., the check engine light stays on-it is very sensitive to allot of things.

I love the looks of this car it is white with the two anniversary huggar orange stripes. the car is pushing well over 350 HP with a kaandN and the custom SLP exhaust system. I like the inside of the car and I think for a big V8 it is excellent on gas.

Weakness:

Drinks a quart of oil every couple of weeks.

Overall an excellent car for the money. Great engine, torquey, powerful, sounds great even stock. Attracts many a Mustang however. But this is not a problem, being that it'll dust even most Cobras. Mine's slightly modified, around 310 horsepower. They're 275 stock. Heavy insurance, but well worth the money. Interior can rattle at times. AWESOME sound system. Good car for any age IF you can keep your foot out of it. Those who do not will pay the price of a beautiful new speeding ticket.

Model Reviewed: Camaro SS

Strength:

The LS1 motor is the cars biggest attribute. It's sleek styling makes the car look like it's going 150mph in the garage. It will turn heads wherever you go, especially with the younger set.

Weakness:

Those seats (I have leather) are the worst.I'm upgrading to some racing seats for mine. Also, a general lack of aftermarket parts, though as time goes by this will not be a real problem.

The Camaro is the final word in factory horsepower. Its stiff suspension and mind bending acceleration are not for the timid. I've owned my SS for 3 years now and everytime I climb behind the wheel I get the same elevated heartbeat as the car growls to life with that throaty exhaust note. I've done alot of mods to the car and have it at over 450 hp now. Overall I would recommend this car to anyone whose does'nt have a heart condition or a perpetual lead foot, as either would spell trouble for the owner.

Strength:

Fastest stock car in town. Gas mileage is incredible for a 300HP V-8.

Weakness:

It's a GM. Leaks when it rains/ carwash. Window mechanism inside the door scratching the windows when they are rolled up/down. Slight hesitation at low RPM. Plastic body scratches easily, paint is blemished easily. visibility is low. Impossible to work on yourself (unless you have a garage with a car-lift). Parts are excessively expensive (like $250 for a starter). Etc.....

The 4th generation ('93-'02) Camaro Z28 is strong! Mine has the LT1 V8...which is the best V-8 engine I have ever seen. I get 22 miles per gallon in town...25 miles per gallon on the Interstate, and the engine is producing close to 300 HP. Name another car that can do that. The car handles well, though the steering is a bit touchy. Mine has four-wheel disc brakes, and they are nice and strong. I had to make an emergency stop at a light once, and they quickly pulled my car down from 60-0 without loosing control. The car all around is an excellent performer. Very fun to drive. The interior is muscle-car looking, a LOT better than the mustangs, but I don't like how hard it is to judge the front end. I haven't had any trouble with the car yet...but it's a GM product so I assume that will change. This car is made for ONLY two people...the back seats will fit small children only. The passenger side floorboard has a huge hump for the catalytic converter that makes sitting on that side uncomfortable. The only metal in the body is the hood....I dont like that personally. The car is super dangerous in bad weather....this is a summertime good weather car ONLY. This car does not like bad weather at all...it leaks (and I don't even have the T-tops!) and it's easy to kick the rear around when you don't mean to in the rain. Overall it's a good car for good weather. It's been dependable for the first three months I've owned it...and the gas mileage is excellent.

Similar Products Used:

Mustang GT....I drove the 'stang, but the Camaro would eat it's lunch. Also, the Mustang's interior looks like the inside of a cheap family car or something. The Camaro is a much better performer, but I still think the Ford is a better engineered car. My Camaro is for sell...and it's the last GM product I will probably ever own. Time to go back to where I started...FORD. They never let me down....

Strong V6, Great looks, handles real good for a car its size.

Weakness:

If I had a choice I would get power windows. Rolling down the window can be a little aggravating because the handle is 6 inches from the floor. Other than that nothing.

Great looking car, jet black. Was a little leary of buying the car with the 3800 V6, but my worries were soon taken care of. This engine can move. No it doesn't compare with the SS 350, or the LT1 350, or a japanese V6 with $10,000 worth of mods. For a base V6 its got plenty of power, went 110 mph on interstate and was only pulling at 3200 rpm pretty impressive for a V6, and still had more to go. Not only a chick magnet but an everybody magnet. Since I bought this car everyone asks about it. Great cruising car.
