Strength:

Performance, comfort, State of the art systems, value, and FUN. The car is very viable as a daily driver. Removable top on the coupe. Icon of American History.

Weakness:

No back seat/use as a family car. However, the seat belts will allow the use of a childs seat and the drivers side air bag can be switched off.

The Corvette redefines the term no compromise performance. Others have used this phrase to justify a lack of amenities, comfort, and/or civility. The C5 has taken this concept to a new level by offering outstanding performance in a package that also includes (does not copmromise) the creature comforts and refinement you would expect from a car in the $40,000 - $50,000 price range. The performance is enough to set the car apart. Handling is equaled by few, better acceleration can only be had at a much higher price, and the brakes are second to none at any price. On the other side of things the spacious interior and options like power-adjustable leather sport-bucket seats and dual-zone automatic climate control make the car equally competent on long drives and in rush hour traffic as it is on the racetrack. It is truly a great car and whole lot of fun to drive.

Strength:

Lots of power, lots of torque. Handles nice and looks good. I like the easy entry seat feature.

Weakness:

Radio antenna (Installed in front window) had lousy reception of many FM and all AM stations. Numereous electrical and computer glitches ranging from irritating to serious.

This is my second Vette and it's been a daily driver for the three years I've owned it. It is stylish, cool and powerful, but my enjoyment of this car was severly impaired by its legion of irritating electrical problems. Vettes are still a lot of car for the money and I would recommend this car to others, but on a 3-year lease instead of a buy: Once it's out of warranty you're out of luck! In the end, it was fun to drive but I expected more from a $43K car.

Similar Products Used:

1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 (Much more reliable than the Vette and almost as fun!); 1988 Corvette Coupe (The '98 was much better than its older brother, but it still has a way to go to be perfect.)

Strength:

Power, design, overall ride, strong handling, affordable, head-turner! Nothing beats driving around in the summer with the top down.

Weakness:

Hmm, can't think of anything except the low ride leads to an occasional bottom scrape on sharply angled driveways. But, the car is designed for the this, so no damage is done. Excellent design.

I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a performance car. It is easily the best value for the dollar. It is also an incredibly fun car to drive, and brings a smile to my face every time I do. I love taking it up on Skyline drive, through one the of best twisting mountain roads here in N. California.

The power is outstanding, with the ability to hit about 54 MPH in FIRST gear. The engine sounds great, and the exhaust note is awesome (especially with an aftermarket exhaust). The mileage is very good for a car with this power. People are constantly stunned when I tell them I have averaged over 30 MPG cruising with the top down at 80 MPH. Remarkably, this is as good of mileage as many imports, albeit not in the city.

The C5's styling is nearly perfect. Some complain about the wide rear end, but I think it looks pretty muscular, especially with chrome exhaust tips (which the 2001 models have standard). The front is absolutely outstanding, and has a great, mean look cruising at dusk w/ the parking lights on. I love seeing another C5 coming at me down the road.

The interior is also very well designed, with everything in easy reach. The seats are probably the most comfortable I have ever ridden in. I have driven 8 hours straight in this car with almost no back fatigue. Outstanding. Also, be sure to get the Heads-Up Display. This is an excellent feature, both for convenience and safety. The AC is ice cold, and the heat really cranks. Enough to keep me warm with the top down when it is only about 54 degrees outside.

Another great feature of this car is the community you join when you drive one. You will soon notice nearly every other Corvette owner waving at you and sharing big, knowing grins. You will also get a lot of comments from others if you are into that sort of thing. Best of all, there are some great sites like Corvetteforum.com that bring the Corvette ownership experience online.

End Summary: I absolutely love this car!

Porsche 911 (friends)- Very favorably. Even he says the Corvette is a better ride, easier to shift, and gets more comments from others. It also costs half the price, and is surely faster off the line. His car also has a variety of quite noisy rattles, not quite what you would expect for $95,000! Sorry Porsche fans, you overpaid big time :)

Strength:

Agresive Aerodynamic influenced styling.
Powerful yet efficient LS1 Engine.
Long list of amenities.

Weakness:

None that come to mind.

I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who wants the best America has to offer in the sports car niche`. This is an American Icon and Legend that has supercar status and a bargain price tag. I am not new to Corvette and this is my 4th (I currently also own a 68 Coupe)and I have yet to be dissapointed by any of the vette's I have owned.

This Generation Five Corvette (C5) employs the all new LS1 (1997+) All Aluminum OHV V8 Displacing 5.7 Liters and producing 345H.P & 350 Lbs/Ft Trq which is funneled through the world class Borg-Warner T-56 6 speed manual that sends the power through a Porscheesque Prop-Shaft to a Getrag rear mounted differntial. Fuel economy for the 6 speed manual is listed as 19 city 27 highway and I have personaly experianced 30+ MPG highway. THis engine also meets California's stringent L.E.V and U.L.E.V standards.

The list of amenities is mind boggling (and some would say frivelous for a sports car) my particular coupe is optioned with the Z51 Road Race Suspension Package and the "1SC" package which included every option available (I do not have the 6 disk changer, but have everything else)

Ergonomics in my opinion are excellent for my 6'2" 260 LB frame (I fit great) and controls are well placed and easy to read as well as see.

This isn't my first Corvette, and it is not my last Corvette, But as of now this is "The Best Vette Yet"

Strength:

Power, looks, handling, American made, the best value for the buck you will ever find

Weakness:

Noisy

The only negative is the road noise. You cannot use a hands free telephone (not that you would want to but it does give you an indication of the sound level)
Other than that it is a marvelous sports car. I have owned corvettes since 1980. I drive them everyday to work. I live in Chicago, they do OK on all but the worst snow days - 3-4 days a year I cannot use it. The C-5 is significantly better than the previous models for day to day use. If you want to use your corvette every day I suggest ONLY considering the C - 5.
As I live in the suburbs I have had sticks on all but one of me vette's. It is not the same experience with an automatic.
It is really cool that it is american made.
It is an unbelievable value . It's competition is the Porsche - too small, too expensive, not as many comfort creature options, and the handling is not better (esp as a day to day car - I do not know if it handles road america better - but I never go there.) I also considered the new supercharged Jag - again $80,000, less space, not as quite as quick however, it was quiter, and it is VERY luxurious (I owned a 4 door Van den Plas and never had any mechanical troubles). This would be my second choice - pass on the MB and Lexus - nowhere near as sporty.
It has an unbelievable amount of storage room. I can carry two sets of golf clubs PLUS a substantial amount of other items.

Strength:

Engine Power, options, styling

Weakness:

Tranny, window rattles when down, stereo...

I bought a used 2000 'vette convertable last month and I really couldn't be happier. There's so much power on tap it staggers the imagination. However, it really quite simple to drive. Just be aware thqat this is NOT a small car- about the same size as a Jeep Cherokee 4-door. The manual top is a slight hassle, but I'm willing to trade power for the wicked "waterfall" styling between the seats. Glass rear window is a nice feature (though I have yet to drive it with the top up for more than 2 miles) and visibility is actually quite good with the top up (the S2000 is REALLY bad at this).
I got nearly every option possible with an exception of the F45,Z06, and cd changer. The stock suspension works just fine for me- firm but still soft enough to not hurt on the smallish holes. Stay away from the big ones, however, as you'll regret hitting 'em. Ground clearance is pretty minimal (what did you expect), but at least they wisely made the air dam out of flexible black platic/rubber so you don't wreck it on curbs, ramps, etc. Just be careful on those driveways and it's a piece of cake.

Traction control right now is a mixed bag for me... I intentionally romped on the gas in a corner in an attempt to step out the rear and it did so- for about 1 foot and a half. The traction control stepped in and straightened it out, but while I was correcting it with steering. The result was quite surprising and it ended up overcorrecting between the two. For drivers used to correcting such oversteer, the TC is unwelcome. For the masses, it'll probably save their life. Basically, I'll turn it off if I want to do some craziness.
The 6-speed is quite peculiar in that 1st and second gears don't always feel "set". Sometimes I find myself wondering if it's in gear or not when shifting. I've been rewarded with a loud "GRIND" a couple of times as it slipped out of gear. Before this car I can count the number of times I've ground a gear on one hand. It's doubled in the last month. Sigh. Additionally, the shifter has a fairly long throw which isn't really to my liking. It'll be replaced soon enough, however.

The radio is fairly plain-jane having been taken out of the stock GM parts bin. However, it's simple as hell to use, easy to read, and the speed controlled volume ROCKS. I really cannot say how much I like this feature. Additionally, all the buttons are very "sort-throw" in that they don't have to be depressed very much to be selected. I really dislike the buttons that have a half inch of travel.

Heads-up display is the coolest feature on this car- bar none. How I lived without it is a mystery. You simply MUST try it.

Memory package has been giving me a little trouble. The easy-entry feature works but it seems to lose my seat setting- often it never returns to the forward position after I get in. Perhaps I'm not setting it right, but everything else works just fine.

Echaust note could be a little louder and deeper, but that's why a nice cat-back system is going to be added. What's a few hundred bucks among friends?

Finally, the driver's side window rattles when it's down and both window leak when they're up. Granted, I'm blasting it with high pressure water at the car-wash, but the S2000 doesn't have this problem.

Overall, I LOVE this car. As fast as I'll ever need, sporty as hell, tons of trunk space, and a list of very nice features. And I almost forgot- 'vette owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

S2000- much smaller and more nimble than the 'vette. However, you have to drive it like you hate it for it to move.

Power, handling, prestige in owning a Vette!!!

Weakness:

Bose system, security system, interior integrity

I always wanted a Vette, and now that I have one I am saddened that I waited so long!!! The car is a dream, but keep repeating to yourself ITS ONLY A CHEVY!!! What I mean is it exhibits the same need for TLC that all GM products need; ie keep tightening screws, little PITA things go wrong, etc. Be very willing to break out the screwdrivers and wrenches to fix annoying little squeaks and rattles!! However, I am still quite impressed with the comfort and power and gas mileage. The ride is harsh, but again repeat after me ITS A SPORTS CAR!!!!! Don't expect a BMW or Jag! If you want one of those, buy it!!!! And, if anyone knows the secret of the security system please email me!!!!

Strength:

Lots of great stuff, but ok...hmmmm....here we go:

awesome braking, decent turning, engine is a right in itself, seats very comftable, and the C5 has to be the most stylish of all models (well stingray rules, but the C5 rocks!, rear visibility is pretty good all things considered.

Lots of great stuff minus the power and the roar, what feels best is getting a wave from other drivers, truly makes you feel great about plopping the cash down to buy this baby!

Weakness:

The column lock issue has been commonplace, there's a fix for it, but other than that, it's a high-end muscle car, it satisfies a certain need and makes a great 2nd car.

Overall the cars a winner, I like the long product cycles and it ensures you don't have a car that changes models a year after you buy it. Seen some "ideas" for the C6, it will be interesting to see what comes to be!
