Ford Mustang (2010 and older) Sports

DESCRIPTION

The Mustang has been redesigned for 2010. Fresh new sheet metal wraps around an updated interior, giving the icon a more modern look and feel.

The Mustang is available either as a coupe or convertible. Each is available with a V6 or a V8. The 210-hp 4.0L V6 carries over unchanged. The 4.6L V8 receives an increase in power - producing 315-hp for 2010. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a five-speed automatic is optional. Model Reviewed: Mustang SVO

Strength:

Very fast 2.3L Turbo engine. Koni struts and shocks from factory. Stiff suspension. Strong breakes > vented disk brakes in the front and back. Great gas milage on highway (27MPG) when I keep off of high boost. Rear wheel drive car, not many around these days. Good aftermarket support but nowhere near as big as the 5.0L. Simple but good looks! Unique head light design and front fascia to 84-86 svo's. Nice looking and functional hood scoupe (air flows through hood scoupe to cool the intercooler). Cool looking double plane rear spoiler. Collectible car in the near future since only 10,000 were produced.

Weakness:

If I crash the SVO it will be very expensive to fix it because body parts are very hard to find for it. Turbo charged engine requires higher than average maintenance schedules. RWD is bad in snow.

I love this car. There were only 10,000 SVO made between 84-86. Overall the 86 SVO is probably the best stock Mustang ever to roll off the Ford factory line. It has by far the best handling compared to any factory Mustang, GT, cobra of any year except cobra R. The steering is responsive and sharp. The brakes are very strong, 11" disks all around. The suspension is stiff due to the factory stock koni shocks and struts which are adjustable. There is very little body roll and stock 16" alloy wheels are good too.

The stock 2.3L turbo svo engine has 200 HP and 260 ft/lb of torque. Although the 2.3L turbo engine doesn't have as much torque as the 5.0L engine in stock form, it makes up more than enough on handling and braking. My car is slightly modified: 17psi boost controled, dynomax mufflers, 14 degrees of initial timing, k&n air filter. Maximum boost comes on around 2,500 RPM and once that happens you better get out of my way. It is just as fast a 5.0L with power pulleys, and k&n filter. Much faster than 97 Prelude and 240 SX. I can keep up with a 1992 3000GT, 1999 Mustang GT in strainght line and pass them in turns. Around town I get about 20 - 22 MPG and on highway I get 27 MPG (if I keep off of boost), which I think is great especially with these high fuel prices these days.

The only bad things about the svo is bad snow traction because it is rear wheel drive. If I hit a nasty bump in a hard turn the rear will try to come around because of the rear axle > something called rear bumpsteer. The valve cover gasket will leak oil if the engine has over 100K miles due to worn out valve seals. The radiator fan won't always kick in when the car gets hot. You have to watch that coolant temperature guage to make sure it doesn't overheat. I fixed that problem with a dash mounted toggle switch and relay. The engine is not that lound, but loud enough to annoy my girl friend and older people who ride in the car. I don't mind it at all, I actually like it very much.

These are hard to find cars and can be a handfull sometimes. If taken care of properly they won't brake down. They are easy to work on because of the huge engine bay area designed for a 5 Liter. Try one out if you find one in good running condition!

Strength:

The availability of aftermarket parts is unbelievable. The stock 225 H.P. can jump around the 600 H.P. mark and still be streetable with sufficient cash flow. Mine currently has the gt-40 intake, trickflow twisted-wedge aluminum heads(the BEST!!!), BBK chromed cold air intake, Vortech 73mm MAF,Motorsport 65mm Throttle body, Crane E-303 cam, tremec-3550 5 spd (originally had the pathetic stock A.O.D.), and has been lowered with eibach pro-kit springs and koni shocks/struts. I have around 400 H.P. at the wheels and currently did a 12.73 1/4 mile using my Dunlop 8000's. You can also make these cars look sick with some simple ground effects. I plan on making my car look like a '93 Cobra (the best looking mustang, ever!!)

Weakness:

Over $2000.00 in repairs. But i guess i should have expected with buying a car from a 18 year old who did all his own mechanical work. These cars also blow goats in the rain, but it also makes it fun too(Doughnuts anyone?) Oh, yeah. You will be tempted to make as much smoke as possible at every stoplight you encounter, as well as get stared down by the millions...and millions of other 5.0 drivers that feel you are cramping their "style"

I paid $5300 for it originally and after $2000 worth of performance mods and another $2000 worth of mechanical problems i still wouldnt trade for anything except a 1993 Cobra or 2000 Pontiac T/A WS6. I would reccomend a 5.0 to anyone who wants a performance car that can be easily turned into a modern Hot-Rod with the right amount of money. Caution, Flowmasters, 1- 1/2 inch lowering springs, and speed bumps dont mate well together. Neither do burn-outs and cops :(

Can you say POWER?? The redesigned 'stang motors eek out that extra power that makes this a VERY SATISFYING car to drive. Winding up through first, she really sets you back in your seat. Into second, you're along for the ride...The exhaust rumble is a real head-turner, and the stainless steel exhaust pipes round out a very nice system. Although the car is a real gas guzzler, if you can't afford the gas, maybe you should look at a different car.

The two tone leather interior (I got mine in black and silver which compliments the silver paint) is quite nice. Seat comfort is an 8/10. My last car was a 1996 T/A with deep buckets, so this has taken a bit of getting used to, plus, the 'stang just has an entirely different driving position (more upright vice the reclined position of the T/A). I liked the 'cockpit' feel of the T/A a bit more than the 'stang.

The redesigned hood scoop looks great, as does the rear spoiler. The ground effects package is sporty, yet subtle with very nice touches such as the cutouts for the dual exhaust.

Plenty of room in the trunk, unless you're hauling around caskets. Perfectly wide and deep enough to hold several sets of golf clubs or a few pieces of luggage. I'm single and I'm a guy, so I'm not hauling a ton of crap in my trunk. This isn't exactly the perfect grocery-go-getter though.

The 35th Anniversary trim package is neat. Nice emblems on the rear of each forward fender, a fancy pony stitched in each seatback (leather interior), a 35th Anniversary emblem on the instrument cluster as well as some upgraded floormats make that a nice touch.

At almost a year and 28,000 miles, there's still no hint of squeaks, squeals or rattles in the interior furnishings or body panels. I do however pamper the car, but drive it how it's supposed to be driven...hard.

Weakness:

Typical Ford paint problems - When water droplets dry on the finish in the sunlight, it leaves an impossible to remove watermark...very common on black and silver paintjobs. I guess the moral of that story is garage your 'stang and dry it after you wash it and keep a good coat of wax on it. Mine is almost a year old and has been extremely babied, and still, the watermarks appeared.

The cupholders are in an odd spot. The forward one is virtually useless as a beverage holder (mine has the ashtray there, unused, of course).

Due to the position of the shifter, it is a bit cumbersome to insert/eject CD's.

The MACH460 stereo system sounds great, but the buttons are small. Plus, I find myself constantly adjusting the volume as car speed/noise changes. I'm not sure why, but what was just right 30 seconds ago is now too loud. I should have gotten the steering wheel controls. My T/A had that, and I miss it.

The back seats, as with most cars in this category, are all but useless.

Could use a slightly larger glovebox. Barely enough room for the owners handbook.

The rear end is a little loose going over bumps in the road, but what else is new? Once again, typical sports car handling.

All in all, I'm quite satisfied with the 1999 Mustang GT. It has clean lines, a nice interior (definately go leather), a nice instrument cluster, a very nice sounding stock stereo if you get the MACH460, and plenty of get-up-and-go. There isn't much else out there that can beat the 'stang GT off the light.

It got a lot of looks from rednecks. It's a classic name. Nice sized tires.

Weakness:

The car doesn't live up to it's legendary reputation. Wasn't the most reliale thing in the world, had tranny problems, a lot of creaking under hard cornering, bad handling at it's limit, turned like a luxury sedan (mushy) Bad acceleration, I expected a much faster 0-60 time with a V8.

Not a fan of this car. It was my high school friend's car. I have driven it for up to a week at a time and never felt car envy, which I should have, I drove a lowly 97 Integra LS at the time. My little 140 hp LS would actually keep up (never beat though) with the Stang GT. On top of that it handled much better. The newer ones 99-01 GTs are much better, they have great acceleration, handle better than any Stang in history, and are at least trying to get that sporty look back. However, the 94-98s and the 5.0s right before them in stock condition are pretty sad...high 6 sec 0-60 times are not impressive out of a V8. If you can, get the newer 99 and up models. The older ones aren't all that good. Unless you're into after market tuning I don't think the Stang is a good choice (98-94 stangs)

Improved V-8 feels good with the manual transmission. Traction control is an important new addition for safety. Suspension control has improved espcially on rough surfaces. Steering is better as well. Turning circle has shrunk to add enhancing slow speed maneuvering. More suspension control allows it to mantain a comfort edge over the Camaro. Stopping power is good and so is the brake-pedal ratio. Position of seats presents you higher with an airy cabin. Dashboard is clean cut and gauges/controls are easy to use and comprehend.

Weakness:

The V-8 remains robust but still trails the Comaro/Firebird. Fuel Economy for this one ranges around 16 to 20. The GT still reacts stiffly on bumps and dips. Steering wheel is uncomfortably close to the chest. The long doors however can be a curse in tight spaces. Room in the back is kinda cramped and sometimes cramps come quickly. Trunk space is meager.

Fine value for its jub description. At $20,875 it was a good buy. Styling is dating back to the original Mustang plus more power. Returning are base and GT coupes and convertibles. The v-6 has gained 40 horsepower and the V-8 35. Traction control is a new option and the new Cobra gets 320 horses. So you have been presented with more liveable options.

Strength:

Unique and rare, powerful, strong, and just about everything else!

Weakness:

Back support could be better in the front seats. The opening to the trunk could be bigger. It could use a 6 speed transmission and a lower rear end gear...

The interior is a little cheep. The cup holders are not well placed, and they do not hold cups well...

There are very few cosmetic differences between the GT and the Cobra. All of the important changes are difficult to see (next to the snake on the sides (:-). 320 HP w/ 320 LBS of torque from a dual over-head cam, 4 valve per cyl alloy V8, oversized clutch, Tremac transmission, full independant suspension, full floating disk calipers, brembo rotors...

Put down the loud pedal, and it moves. Put your foot on the middle pedal, and it slows down very nicely, thank you. Gentle the snake through the curves and you will feel the grin on your face because the IRS keeps the chassis from rear-wheel-hopping or sliding.

Most of the similar products use 19" rims - Viper, Vette, Camero SS, Trans-Am. Total cost of ownership with the Cobra (using 17" rims) make it the most cost effective world-class sports car. If anything breaks, most ford dealers can get it fixed. If you have anything more exotic, it really costs!

My next purchase is a Cobra R

Model Reviewed: Mustang Convertible

Strength:

It has been a very reliable car (daily driver). The ABS and Traction control should be required here in Iowa during the winter. This is my third Mustang (85 GT and 94 Conv) and I can tell that ABS and Traction Control are worth the cost. My current convertible has a V-6 with a 5 speed manual transmission. The arrangement works well, but the engine has so much torque that I usually skip the first and third gears during normal driving. All in all, it is a really good sports car. I highly recommend the convertible. There is very little difference between the coupe and convertible noise levels. The only time that there is addional noise is during rain (the rain drops make a very distinctive "pop" when the hit the top).

Weakness:

If there is a drink in the front cup holder, the gear shift hits it when in second and fourth gear. This has been changed on 2001 cars. In certain driving positions, the LED odometer reflects on the windsheild at night (it appears upside down and backwards). The rear seats are not usable by anyone over twelve years old and are very hard to get into and out of. Ford could use the shoulder belt system that I have seen on the Sebring convertibles.

I like the convertible Mustang. It is the least expensive convertible on the market in this class. For a convertible, its a good buy. My local Ford dealership has been very helpfull and responsive to the smallest comment. The car drives very well and makes the trip home every day very enjoyable when it is warm enough to have the top down (65 degrees is my limit). The heater and air conditioning works really well. All of the controls are in the right place. I can not say enough good things about this car except for the LED odometer and the cup holders.

I would recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a daily driver convertible as long as no one is going to be in the back seats.
