Weakness:

None so far

Let me start off by saying that I have done more research than you can imagine with this purchase. I also felt that even though I have only had mine now for a week, I thought this would be helpful to those who are considering a ponycar. All of the reviews thus far on the 2001 GT seem to be nitpicking. I mean, look at what you are buying. You are buying a sports car. Not a family sedan, not an SUV, not a sports coupe, but a sports car. There are certain creature comforts that I am willing to sacrifice so that I may have a true driver's car. This car fits the bill perfectly.

The first thing on anybody's mind when they car shop is the price. For what you pay, the GT can't be beat. I mean $21000 for leather and loaded? Come on. You could go ahead and spend that on a Celica or Eclipse, but they can't compare to this. Don't feed my the whole Japanese vs. America thing either. I also own a 99 Nissan Altima and I can truly say that the Ford is right next to the Nissan in build quality. Let's not forget the looks either. This car will turn the heads of your neighbors and the traffic you are stuck in. The exhaust note is perfect for this car. Also, don't feed me the mpg argument either. On the sticker, the GT is rated at 18 city and 23 highway. The V6 stang is rated 19 city and 25 highway. Insurance wise, depending on your company and your driving record, the GT is only about $30 more per six months than the V6. Also, the GT will certainly hold its value better than a V6. The interior is comfortable and the Mach stereo is excellent. With the stereo, you can select to have the audio signal processed to fit to the driver's seat, all seats or rear seats. The actual sound produced, is the best I have ever heard in a stock stereo. Nothing needs to be added to this car except and K&N filter.

I drove the cars listed above in similar products used. The prelude is too pricey for what you get. The Firebird, looks awesome but GM has some serious fit and finish issues in every vehicle they make. The Eclipse is nice, but it is priced right at where the GT is priced and it has that chick car stigma to it.

In conclusion, I will leave you with this, find me another car that has the horsepower, looks, quality, and daily driveability that the Mustang has. At this time with what's out there, you won't find it.

Strength:

Looks Good
Decent gas mileage,
Decent comfort,
The top goes down,
Girls like it
runs good
Economy car gas mileage with hot rod looks

Weakness:

no power
Ford build quality (an oxymoron)
!@#$%^ 4 cyl engine is anemic and tends to crack pistons
cheap interior materials
Have to park it in winter
The trunk is only 8 inches deep

It REALLY needs more engine. A fully loaded convertible body with an 88hp 4 cyl and automatic? What was Ford thinking? Other than that I love the car. It looks good, accomadates my 6'1 frame (try that in a miata)

Strength:

Gotta love the power! It's exclusive and makes you feel special driving! Body styling is beautiful. Easily modded to add additional power. Nice stock stereo system. Very fun car to drive, especially with the top down on a warm summer day. I get lots of compliments about my car from strangers when just cruising around.

Weakness:

Recall, recall, recall. I've taken it in for 2 recalls sofar and just found out Ford is going to recall it again in the near future for another problem. Bad gas mileage and not a lot of space but that's not why I bought it. Slightly slower then camero and firebird but a couple cheap mods solves that problem.

Overall I truely love this car and would buy it again if I had the choice. I've only had one problem with the car since I bought it and Ford was very helpful and solved it for me right away. If you have the extra $$ and want a great fun car get a Cobra!

Strength:

Looks great, an inexpensive chick magnet sports car, small backseat to eliminate unwanted company (ex. mother-in-laws, unwelcome friends of girlfriend/wife.)

Weakness:

More fun to look at than drive, unless you CHANGE THE TIRES. Small backseat for welcomed friends and family. Trunk opening is too narrow and makes it hard to fit items into the truck which could otherwise fit when the seats are folded down. The OEM 205/65/15 Goodyear Eagle GA tires are the worst for this car and wear out fast with even "Grandmother" style driving. Invest in the 205/65/15 Michelin Pilot XGT H4 tires. It is a tremendous difference. I am so happy I changed the tires to the Michelin tires at only 19,500 miles.

My 6cyl. 1998 Mustang Coupe drives like a dream now with the Michelin Pilot XGT H4 tires. In the rain there was a road where I was the only car on the road and I tried from a stopped position to accelerate hard and make the wheels spin with the Michelin tires. It is not easy to do with the Michelin tires. When the Gooyears were new, they were slipping and sliding and hydroplaning all the time without even trying. Leaving a toll booth in the rain almost always caused the wheels to spin, unless you were extremely gentle. It was never a relaxing ride in wet or dry weather with the Goodyear tires. The car would lean and understeer. The Michelin Pilot XGT H4 tires hug the road. Going around the typical tremendous curves to get on and off highways in NJ are now a snap. Before, I always had the feeling that I was about to fall off the road. There was no room for any error with the Goodyear tires. The Michelin Pilot XGT H4 tires nearly drive themselves. Buying these new tires is a fantastic investment for this car. What a dramatic difference!!!! I strongly recommend these Michelin tires for all of you 15" tire Mustang owners. You will love them!

I have a 6cyl. 1991 Mercury Sable. The Sable as a much more enjoyable ride. The Mustang handles like a dinosaur, but better tires make a tremendous difference with this car. The Goodyear Eagle GA tires are the worst. They would make any car drive terrible.

Strength:

Great engine. Lots of horespower, decent torque, excellent sound. Body styling, though cliched, has plenty of presence.

Weakness:

Serious build quality issues. Fit and finish of the cabin is not up to par: can't compete with any current Japanese or European cars in terms of interior quality. Materials are mismatched, parts are poorly aligned, gaps too large. Uncomfortable driver's seat: seems Detroit doesn't have the slightest clue how to design a comfortable seat. Maybe its better suited for broader American butts...
Handling on smooth roads is quite good, but tends to lose the plot on lumpy/bumpy backroads. Too much body lean and understeer for a car with sporting pretentions. Fuel consumption not great, but didn't expect it would be.

I guess this is the perfect car for a mid-life crisis male. Its more a car to be seen in than one you'd use to attack a winding mountain pass. Which is shame because the high power 4.6 V8 is one of great engines. Ford has the potential to make the Mustang one of the great driver's cars, all they need to show is little more will and to greatly improve US build quality. The Mustang really is several generations behind even the cheapest Japanese import in terms of build quality.
Ford spent several million dollars converting the car from left-hand to right-hand drive for the Australian market, but in reality the money would have been better spent engineering the Falcon to accept the Mustang's engine. Then you'd have a great driver's car.
I still find it hard to believe that Yanks rave about this beast. Maybe after decades of sub-standard American automobiles the buying public can no longer tell the good from the merely average.
You can do a lot better than this, Ford...

Doesn't car with Australian built Ford Falcon. Falcon has superior build quality, refinement and handling. Put the Mustang engine in the Falcon and who'd have a killer product.

Strength:

Great looking Car, decent power, flotation seats are nice, parts are cheap

Weakness:

eats gas like candy, sucks to drive in the rain, forget taking it out in the winter, suspension is crap, handling is crap, sunroof leaked, tires go fast, gear shifting is terrible, everybody wants to race, oil leaks too much...

After driving this car, i now realize the poor craftmanship Ford puts into their cars. The Mustang gets too much credit then it actually deserves, most likely because it has been an American classic, or is envied by people who have not owned or driven the car for themselves... Mustang owners who think their cars are the best, obviously have not sampled many other cars. Although the power is nice, i found sometimes the car had too much torque in the first gear, ...not all the time did i want to start off like i was dragging ...and later found myself starting in second gear for a much smoother start. This car tottaly sucks in the rain and i feared taking it out when it was pouring. The good side to this car is that it provides ample power for steep hills and sweeping the stage clean for camaros and Trans Ams... but other then that, go buy this car if you can't afford a REAL car.

I recently test drove a 1999 mustang GT with leather and a 5 speed. It was seriously one of the funnest things i've ever done in my life, and i would recommend the car to anybody looking into getting one. I am currently in the process of trying to sell my truck in order to purchase either a 1999 or 2000 model. See you on the road!
