A BLAST to drive,

Weakness:

Gas milage, upkeep

I absolutely love this car. It is old (89), has 80k on the engine, but still runs strong. Rotaries (RX-7's have rotary engines...) are kinda quirky in how they have to be treated and such, so, if you get one, be sure to read up A LOT on how to treat them. I also think that, unless you have unlimited money, you have to like working on cars to maintain one of these (when I bought mine I didnt know this, and didnt think that I would enjoy doing work on cars....I really enjoy working on this one a lot). It corners insanely well, it is fast (even though I dont even have one of the Turbo models), and I love to drive it. I find myself going for drives just for the purpose of enjoying my car. If youare going to get one, I would suggest you get either a TII (Turbo II) or a 3rd gen (93-95), because they are even faster than my car. 3rd gens are especially nice...I think I will be making my next car a 3rd gen RX-7. This car is for someone on a budget who is willing to spend plenty of time with their car (and learning about their car). If you get one, you will not be disappointed.

Strength:

Just looking at a clean rx-7 can send shudders through your spine. This is one of the sportiest, cleanest, sharpest cars I have ever seen. Any more curves and the car would be ruined as would any less. This car is fast...my car is basically stock and it isn't even the turbo model and I can whoop on most other cars. Interior is a dream

Weakness:

There are very few people nowadays that know what to work on rotary engines, and the labor can be quite pricey. Parts are expensive, luckily rx-7's are reliable.

If you want a relatively cheap sports car that handles like a dream and will turn heads than nothing can suite you better than an rx-7!

Weakness:

Electronics
Useless 2+2 seats
Huge Blind spot

When you tell people you drive an RX-7 they immediately question its reliability. I can only speak for the second generation cars but for some reason these cars have an undeserved bad wrap for reliability. Ok, it is not as reliable as a 95 Civic, but it is just as good as any similar model year car with 100K miles on it. I have driven it for two years commuting 80 miles to school each day and have not had any repair cost besides routine maintenance. It has always started even in the coldest sub zero weather. However, you CAN NOT abuse this car. You must keep oil in it as it burns a small amount on purpose, change the oil regularly, and you can NEVER let it overheat. If you do these simple things the engine on a NA will easily last 150+k miles. Unfortunately, the electronics just plain suck. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can fix most of the problems however they are still annoying. The car also floods if you do not let it warm up before you turn it off (as result of a buggy computer.) That’s all the negatives, all cars have some, here are the positives. As it has been mention before in this forum this car handles on a level few other cars can match. The car is just quick enough to make it fun to drive (Turbo II’s are much faster), but be assured that it is no drag racer. However, on a curvy road while exploring the upper reaches of the tach few cars can keep up with you. Gas mileage varies dramatically depending on how you drive it. In the summer doing strictly highway driving I once got 29 mpg. However, driving just around town I usually get about 19. The car is light but it has a quality feel that is hard to define. It is also relatively safe considering its minuscule size. The 2+2 “emergency” seats are just about useless unless you drive around a small child. If you are looking for an economical true sports cars there is simply no better value; it’s a blast to drive and unlike some others reliable enough to be a everyday vehicle.

Strength:

Extreme Handling, Rev happy motor, Exotic good looks

Weakness:

Maintenance, Cheap looking interior and bad paint

The only bad quality about the car is the maintenance and the fact that it is high strung. I love driving the car, kinda gives you a superman (or woman) type feeling. Shifter feel is excellent as well as the feel of the road when driving. At 10/10ths it gets kinda hairy, but completely controllable. I would recommend only to someone willing to spend the time with the car.

Strength:

handling, speed and looks

Weakness:

lack of sufficient trunk space, maintainence, mpg

Because it IS faster and better handling than a V6 Camaro. I used to be a dilevery boy and drove a V6 camaro at work. Having driven both there was no doubt in my mind the RX was better. The guy a few posts below said they sold his girlfriend's 1993 RX-7 for $500 (What a deal, if you see this let me know if you have any more cars for sale). Apparently he's "heard and read about this car and how it claims be more than what it really does." (Heard and read? Didn't he own three of them? Couldn't have been that bad. After I own a crappy car I don't go and buy the same thing).
This car is recommended for people who aren't set in their beliefs that american cars are god. If you drive one chances are you'll like it. Its no Ferrari but it doesn't cost as much as one either.

Strength:

The power is crazy. The handling is great. The size of the car is good because i put in a little tube and it made my car sound like it had a system. Its tougher than any other import out there

Weakness:

WHen you put another rice rocket next to my rx7 there are no weaknesses.
but other than that synchros and interior need to be maintained.

Whoever decides to choose a 7, be in for a thrill. There is alot of people who think rx7 are real fast, so they buy them and expect them to gun so quickly. TO tell you the truth a rx7 is real fast if you know how to (hatowe) drive it. There are plenty of different ways to trick shift your rx7 you just have to know how to do it. My rx7 at this time was nailed from behind so it is no drivable but the next one i get will beat a lot of ass.

This car compares to all muscle or all rice rockets. There is no comparison to think that such a old car can beat most new ones. and all i have is a matrix air filter and adapter.

good looks, no turbo lag, handles, and breaks excellent, can't get enough of driving this car, it's so pimp, and it's also classy as well, you can get any lady you would like with this hi performance machine

Weakness:

high maintence, gas pig but great compared to other cars in it's class, also it lacks storage space, and only seats two, im not impressed with the bose radio system either, the leather is cheesy material,

IT's a beautiful car, and i can't get enough of it, im in love with this car, i will never sell it, it's a race car though, if you want something that has room and seats four this isn't the car for you, this is a car for you and your date, or just you looking to calmly dispose of a v8.

Strength:

The most fun car I've ever driven. Handling is second to none. Speed and acceleration is great.

Weakness:

Cost and frequency of repairs. High gas use. Shortage of qualified mechanics.

This car isn't the most reliable, however it was no worse than the Mustang I used to own. Now that I have switched to the RX-7, I will NEVER go back to the stang. It is a better car in everyway possible except for cargo space. The main reason I like it is because it is a lot less common than the american sports cars out there. Why own a high performance sports car that looks like everybody else's. What's the fun in that. I see supped up Mustangs and Camaros go by all the time rattling away from the loud stereo and exhaust pipes. I just laugh (they're like belly-buttons, everybody has one. You've seen one, you've seen them all). Sure some of the american cars go fast and look ok, but they drive like boats and as fast as they are very few can out perform the RX-7.

Model Reviewed: touring

Strength:

Fast, fast and fast! Superior acceleration time, perfect cornering. It is more or less the closest road race car that you can possibly get on road. Basically, if you get the touring version, it gives you alot of added luxury features, e.g. glass sunroof, BOSE system, Leather interior. On the other hand, if you get the R2 or R1 package, it foes not offer those features, however, you get an extra oil cooler and tougher suspension ( which I don't like ). RX 7 can be modded be a Viper killer with the right tools and hands.

Weakness:

First of all, you NEED a BOOST GAUGE, if not, you will have no idea what is going on with the turbos. Gas mileage is virtually a night mare. Every time when I gas up my car, it takes me a whopping 50 dollars ( on Premium gas ), and it only brings me to ~ 330 km during normal driving condition. If I would have play around with it, it would be ~ 250 km to a tank. It is not the car you want to take out for grocery shopping or so, and it is not as realible as a Honda, but these are always the trade offs for a high performance car. Having saying that, the RX 7 can still live up if you treat it with a lot of care e.g. oil change as timely as it should, make sure you have the right boost pattern 10-8-10. If you tend to modify it, make sure you feed enough fuel to the car and make sure upgrade your radiator to keep it running at a cooler temp.

Not a Joe Average car, but if you know the car cpabilities, you can outrun lot's of more expensive sports car with confidence!
