Fast as hell car, can rape a 5.0 Stang, or Camero, and it really does handel like a dream car...
Weakness:
High mainteince, change oil every 1500 miles, or else!!! weak hoses, and So SO gas miliage If you love sports cars, and i do, i suggest getting this car, dont go out and get some domestic Peice of crap, you will only get spanked when i pull up next to you at the light (no joke) okay, okay, so they get crappy gas miliage, but who cars, i love this car, no matter what anyone tells me. Similar Products Used: Compares to a 911, Supra, Turbo Mr2, and 300Zx but still blows all of them away (anytime) (i still own a 88 turbo Rx-7, and a 82 Rx-7, which i drive on some occation, i have no non rorary cars. Strength:
Its fast as hell, looks great, and is rare. It's handling is amazing when you are on dry roads.
Weakness:
Most are in the shop at least a month or more per year. High maintenance and high parts cost...as well as far away specialists. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE MAZDA DEALER AT ANY COST! ESPECIALLY IRVINE MAZDA. driving it can be like dating a beautiful woman with long fingernails and perfect hair. Take her on a date at the local club and she looks amazing...take her home and you are glad you are with her for every second.....but there are so many things you can do during the week or she will break a nail and get upset with you. Body style is pretty nice.
Weakness:
I really don't know what's with all this hype about "speed", "leaving everyone in the dust", and "raw power." I've owned 1986, 1990, and 1993 Mazda rx-7's and they're all little weaklings. '86, and '90 both have turbos and I get blown off the line when I race my friends tiny V6 camaro. The 1993 is supposed to be the fastest of all and yet my other friend's 1987 V6 firebird blew me in the 0-60 race. The only reason I can figure out for all this "awesomest car in the world" nonsense is that nobody has ever experienced the power and speed of any REAL sports cars like the 2000 Dodge Viper R/T, 2000 Chevrolet Corvette, and 2000 SS Camaro. Strength:
Will out corner most everything on road. Very fast. Funnest car I've drove. Attracts lots of attention.
Weakness:
Gas guzzler. This is a true sports car. You should drive a few cars before making a decision. Make sure you can afford the price of the high maintenance, parts are expensive. You should also find a qualified mechanic who knows all the ins and outs of the Rx7. But if you can afford it, you're in for the ride of your life. Especially if you modify yours'. Mine has a Greddy airnex air filter, RacingBeat 3in full exhaust, boost controller, 2 500cc injectors, additional injector controller ( AIC ), and 15lbs of boost. The car just screams. I leave most of the American sports cars in the dust, even when they spray nitrous. Same with the other Japanese sports cars. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Strength:
Awesome performance. I now love being the first person at a red light. 0-60 performance is breath-taking.
Weakness:
Fuel consumption is high, as would be expected with a Turbo. Review several cars before making a decision. A good mechanic is hard to find for the rotaries unless you are in California, Florida, or a large city. Not a car for the average commuter. Tight ride causes rattles. No cupholder is a problem once in a while. Similar Products Used: Honda delSol. Quick car, but nowhere near the performance of the 3rd Gen RX-7. |

Mazda RX-7 Turbo II
Strength:
Amazingly quick. Handles like a dream. There is no better bang for your buck on the road. 1.3L Turbo rotary engine will dust 5.0L Mustangs, and about 95% of everthing else on the road. Rotary engine has only three moving parts, if properly taken care of will easily go 200k or more. Many easy mods to increase hp. It is almost like owning an exotic, but for 5% of the price.
Weakness:
No cup holder! This is not the car for everyone. It is a high end sports car, and as such, it requires a lot of TLC to stay in top form. As someone who likes to tinker with my cars, it is the perfect car for me. There is no better $ vs hp value on the road today. My 14 year old car that I paid $2400 for will more than hold its own with brand new Camaros and Mustangs. If you want the true sports car experience, and are willing to spend some time on upkeep, this is the car to own until you can save $100,000+ for an exotic. Weak interior, PROBLEMS!! I've had constant problems with this car, tomorrow, i'll be spending my saturday resoldering some electronics on it, finding an oil leak, finding a coolant leak (probably cracked radiator). Similar Products Used: 2000 Eclipse, 1981 Corvette, Firebird |

RX7 R1 Twin Turbo
Strength:
It's like driving a $90K exotic sports car and will always be mistaken on the road. The sequential turbos provide quick acceleration and top speed!! Not to mention that it rides like it's on rails.
Weakness:
Vaccuum lines need to be replaced... High maintanence. Many recalls for 93 but most have been already met. If you are an enthusiast and would love to have a true sports car, then I would highly recommend this car 100%. The most bang for the buck, 10K - 20K. It's more of a RACE CAR!!! Strength:
hauls butt, corners like a superbike, and i can work on it myself
Weakness:
have to be careful how you treat it, if you let it overheat, it's a goner.... run low on oil, it dies.... don't change the oil, it dies.... let it sit too long without starting, yup.. it dies. BUT none of these conditions are really that hard to keep up with, are they? this is a SPORTS car, a little maintennance must be expected! i found this car in a garage, been sitting there for about 10 years (owner had been out of country). it looked showroom perfect , except it didn't run. i got it REAL cheap, bought a used, low mileage rotary (from a wrecked 85 rx7)for about $800, and dropped it in myself. i'm no mechanic, just handy with tools. it was pretty darn easy to work on, and in a day and a half, i had a running, beautiful condition 1st gen! even the AC works! that was almost 3 years ago, and it still runs flawlessly. the engine is basically stock. most of the work i've done is upgrading. i put a limited slip rear end on, discs on all 4 wheels(with kevlar pads), eibach springs, tokico shocks, and the widest tires i could fit without rubbing (205/60 R13s). i still can't wipe the grin off my face! this thing goes fast, turns fast, and stops fast.... and it's almost 20 years old! i can't wait to put my dellorto 48 sidedraft on..... almost like bolting on 50hp! on my old gsl-se, the dellorto made fools of many a mustang5.0, camaro, firebird, and even an older porsche! now i've got a suspension to match that kind of power output and just itchin' to use it! like i said, i'm no mechanic. everything i've done has been: look for and bolt it on. i'd highly recommend a 1st gen to anyone.... they're cheap, fast, and easy to work on. i'll probably drive it till i die, or till i get a 95rx7 twinturbo! Best japanese sportscar ever made. Only NSX rivals and maybe new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI or Subaru Impreza Turbo or Nissan Skyline (all with at least 280HP and not available in the US). But the RX7 has better looks and is a true rear wheel drive drivers car like Porsche or Ferrari. I changed only the exhaust of mine and put a Bonez racing pipe and racing beat muffler and the car now handles at least 280HP and 0-100 km/h in 5 sec. and top speed of over 275 km/h (over 170 mph) My tach is always on max 180 mph) but real speed should be 170 or 173 mph I think. Handling is incredible and neutral because of very low weight and 50/50 front-back weight distribution. I do normally high speed driving( there is no "legal" speed limit in Argentina) and the car is very stable at over 160 mph.
Weakness:
The rubber hoses suck, they brake because of the high heat and pressure. I replaced them with aluminum aftermarket ones from Greddy or similar. This is a true sports car. Dont expect cupholders or space for fat guys or to move around. This car was made to be driven hard and at high speeds. Dont buy it if your intention is to drive it at 70 mph on the freeway or cruise around. But satisfaction is garanteed if you are a fast driver and love curvy roads, race tracks or high speed driving.
