Strength:

-Power. Massive amounts of torque, and just as much horsepower to back it up. It'll burn tires all the way through 3rd gear, and scream all the way to 160mph. -Excellent handling. -Aggressive styling. -Fun to drive. -Best bang for the buck, hands down. -Gas mileage, far above average, especially for a 3,400lb. car being pushed by 5.7L of displacement. On average, I can achieve 18-20mpg in the city, and upwards of 30mpg in sixth gear on a highway. Contrary to popular belief, these cars actually burn less gas than other "high-performance" 4 and 6-cylinder motors that have less power all around.

Weakness:

-Dated chassis. You'll want to purchase a set of weld-in subframe connectors to stiffen things up. It'll run you about $200 installed, and makes a night and day difference compared to stock. The connectors will also reduce body roll, improving handling. -Rubbery shifter. The transmission is a great piece, but the shifter should be replaced by a more precise aftermarket unit (I chose a Pro 5.0, the B&M Ripper is also a good choice.) -Traction. These cars are very easy to lose control of at full throttle. Always ease into the gas. -Requires premium gas due to the high compression. The car will run horribly on 87 octane, a mistake that a lot of people make. -Unwanted attention. You'll get a lot of people wanting to drag race, and cops will always look at you first when you're traveling at the same speed as the other cars on the road.

Purchasing my Formula was one of the best decisions I've made. The car accelerates like no other thanks to the underrated 346 cubic inch LS1 V8 (which is grossly underrated, it most likely has 50 more horsepower than the advertised 305.) The Firebird handles like a dream. Generates high amounts of grip, and the steering is responsive. It could be improved with 17x9 wheels and 275/40/17 rubber over the stock 16x8s with 245/50/16s, also. As far as styling goes, it's unparalled. The car has excellent lines, a very sporty stance, and I always receive compliments on it from all types of people, including kids, women, and older men. There's not too many of these late model Firebirds on the road, so you will be noticed and draw attention wherever you go. The T-tops are a must-have in my opinion, they multiply the car's appeal in the summer months, and the roofline still looks attractive even with the tops in, something a convertible usually cannot claim.

Strength:

Raw Base Power. Pontiac underrates this LS1. Mine dynoed a baseline of 310 rwhp. That is much more than the claimed 325hp at the flywheel. Gets lots of looks...gotta love it!

Weakness:

Very cheesy plastic interior and plastic like leather. But that's not what you buy this car for. Also, some instrumentation is hard to see - bad placement by Pontiac.

This car is great. Its a shame they are no more (for now at least). Excellent acceleration and handling. Kept the car stock for about a year, then the got the "power adder" obsession. Added on a Vortech supercharger and Borla catback exhaust and now it REALLY flys. No Corvette or Mustang can catch it. Definitely recommend this car for any sports enthusiast especially those who love adding mods.

Model Reviewed: Pontiac Trans Am

Strength:

- Awesome power, even before I upgraded it - Excellent handling, the car could easily take expressway offramps at 75 mph - Very comfortable front seats, if you have the optional adjustable lumbar support its even better - T-tops give you the open airedness of a convertible, without the hassles of a convertible - Awesome styling, some say it might be too much, but nothing says get the **** out of my way more than this car - Great bang for the buck, other than the Chevy Camaro Z28, you will not find a better performing car in this price range

Weakness:

- Car suffers from poor GM fit and finish, dashboard creaks sometimes and has intermittent gaps between panels - Crappy power window motors, this is common with almost all GM cars - Aluminum driveshaft is noisy, but doesn't affect performance - Monsoon audio system may be sufficient for most people, but if you are a true audiophile, you'll want to upgrade it

I bought my dream car when I was 20, and four and a half years later, I still have it. This car was the first year that GM put the LS1 5.7L V8 engine in the Trans Am, and redesigned the front nose of the car amongst other slight detail changes. I bought the car in early 1999 as a left over from the previous year, but it had never sold and only had 400 miles on it. During the 36,000 mile factory warranty I had the aluminum driveshaft replaced twice because of a ticking which I have found out is a common problem with my car and the Camaros. I purchased an extended warranty on the car and under the extended warranty, I had an ignition coil go bad around 40k miles, and I had the fuel pump go out around 45k miles. The drivers side power window motor went out at 67k miles, but I fixed that on my own since it would be cheaper than paying the deductible for my extended warranty. I have done considerable engine upgrades to my car and am roughly around 500 engine HP, and this car continues to drive well. The handling is great, power is amazing, comfort levels are amazing. The stock Monsoon system is good for a stock radio, but I am an audiophile, so I replaced the whole thing with an aftermarket setup. In a whole, I absolutely love the car. Everything from the styling, to the power, to the handling, to the interior, to the T-tops (a feature that no other car company offers anymore). Its a shame GM had to discontinue this line of cars. I have had my car for 4.5 years and plan on owning it for much longer.

Model Reviewed: Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air WS6

Strength:

-Incredibly powerful 325hp LS1 (Corvette) engine (162mph top speed, 13.0 second 1/4 mile at the track). - Excellent fully adjustable power seats. - Handles and corners extremely well. - Solid rear axle makes this car best for drag racing. - Beautiful and intimidating musclecar styling. - T-tops beat convertibles anytime. This is the last car to have it. - It's a 2+2. You can put kids in the back seat and they love it. - Pontiac's red gauge instrumentation very easy on the eyes. - Headlights are excellent - rare on modern cars.

Weakness:

- You can't see where the front of the car is. - Paint quality and application is poor. - Road noise from large tires can be annoying on rough roads. - "Skip-shift" feature on 6-speed transmission is a pain. - raked windshield distorts road slightly.

This fully loaded musclecar runs like a dream. Incredible power at all speeds. Throaty exhaust rumble makes this beast sound like a race car. Excellent handling doesn't even notice corners, though solid axle can be a disadvantage on bumpy corners versus split axle of pricier sports cars. In-your-face musclecar styling gets looks everywhere you go and intimidates Euro-exotic owners. Ride is good for a sporty car, large tires roar on certain roads. Difficult to see where the front of the car ends so you have to be careful. Dash is large and hard to see over - not a suitable car for smaller people. Raked windshield distorts view of the road, gives the impression of heat rising from the pavement at times. Having a 4-seat sports car is great. Kids love going for a ride in the "Batmobile". This is more car than you'll ever need for performance unless you got to the track. It hangs with Ferraris and Corvettes with a good driver. 100mph feels like 30mph, and you'll never arrive late for work again. I love the cockpit style interior and the fully adjustable leather seats hold tight for serious driving. Much better than average climate control. Overall the car is much better than the published press would have you believe. The trunk is small though, and rearward visiblity is not the greatest (but in this car you're never worried about what's behind you unless it has a flashing red light). All things considered this is a good solid car that is a lot of fun for the price. The best North American muscle car to date.

Strength:

THE SPEED OF A FIREBIRD IS DEFINATLEY WHAT SETS IT APART FROM THE OTHER SPORTS CARS THAT COST ABOUT THE SAME. WHETHER IT IS THE 3.8L V6, OR THE 5.7L V8, YOU CAN BE SURE THAT NO "ORDINARY" SPORTS CAR WITH THE SAME SIZE ENGINE CAN TOUCH IT.

Weakness:

THE USUAL FOR A GREAT SPORTS CAR; BUMPY FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING, NOT MUCH CARGO SPACE, POWER LOCKS AND WINDOWS ARE FAULTY IN SOME AND ALSO THE CRANKSHAFT TENDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT IS A TWO-PIECE AND THE JOINT IS DAMAGED.

OVERALL THE FIREBIRD IS EVERYTHING THAT YOU WOULD EXPECT OF A TRUE SPORTS CAR; VERY FAST, GOOD HANDLING, AND MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE A PART OF THE CAR RATHER THAN JUST THE PERSON DRIVING IT.

Strength:

Drivetrain is sweet, firm but comfortable. Stylish and nice looking, very good seats. Drove once 2250 miles in one day (from Norway to Switzerland) in winter, and arrived tired, but without backpain.

Weakness:

too bad mine hasn't the 5.0 L motor... 3,4 L is a bit weak, but ok. As on every GM car I owned so far, had to replace the alternator at 50 K. Targa roof is still waterproof even in heaviest rain, but a few drops of water may enter in a high-pressure car-wash.

one of the best cars I ever had, out of about 30 cars I owned so far. Had 30 K miles when I purchased it in July 02, and added 22 K more within 10 months. Had only to replace serpentine belt and alternator since then. Very reliable, even in deepest winter. Would buy this car again.
