Strength:
The Vortec V6 seems to have plenty of power for what we use the vehicle for.
Weakness:
1)Transmission - replaced at 42K Our experience with the Blazer has been a series of mixed emotions. There are pleny of things we like about the vehicle but also there are things that seem to pop up that are inconvenient, can be costly, and puts a sense of anxiety about what will happen next. Weakness:
No manual transmission offered. No ground clearance. Small tire options. Not really meant to go off road. Relieabilitiy the worst. A disaster. Couldn't keep the thing out of the shop. I bought it only to take advantage of GM visa and employee discounts. List of problems: missing weld on front frame, electrical faliure in wiring harness, Brakes gone at 17000 miles, engine constantly coming on, seat belts not retracting. Worst new car I have ever owned. Got rid of it at 20,000 miles after wife became afraid to dirve out fear of being stranded! Bought a Toyota and never looked back. EGR VALVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many other 1993 +/- blazer owners has had the same EGR valve problems? I bought mine in Oct 2000, two weeks later it would barely idle. I took it to the dealer, and he fixed (hahahaha) it. Ya Right. All he did was clean out some carbon....and delay the problem until the warrently went off. Then when i took it back, they claim it has different problems, although it acts teh exact same way. "Could be anything causing that problem"....if you hear this quote...swing first and think later. BULLPATTIES!!!!. Now they tell me its this part and that part....parts alone costing $500-$600...this time...as i read from this and other articles...this problem never goes away. Funny how the warranty problems don't require parts to be bought...sone as that warranty is up though.....LOOK OUT. Take my (and plenty others) advice do not buy a BLAZER!!!!!!!!!!!! Looked good...but that's were it ended!
Weakness:
I've had more repairs with this vehicle that it prompted me to pass it down to an employee at about 32000 miles and buy a Toyota. It started out with an electrical fire on the passenger side mirror...just started out of the blue one day. Then came the numerous brake jobs, constant rattles, radiator problems, battery replacements. AND NOW at 49,000 miles I have had to replace the transmission and radiator because of some small faulty part that created an overheating problem that was not recognized until it was too late. I've had it fixed but feel that it is more good money down the drain and probably should have gotten rid of the vehicle. However at 49,000 miles it just seems a little premature and from what I'm reading here I wouldn't get anything for it anyways! I now own a Toyota 4-Runner and have been looking at a Highlander. At the time I purchased the Blazer, I had also purchased a Chevy S-10 diesel truck at the time which gave me nothing but problems and I traded it in for a Toyota Tacoma! The last thing I need is constant down time, not to mention the constant expense when the warranty is up. There's also a safety factor involved here...I'm just glad the fire started when the vehicle was sitting in the parking lot and not while I was driving on the highway! I've always believed in purchasing "American"...but this experience has changed my way of thinking! Similar Products Used: My Toyota 4-Runner puts this vehicle to shame. Since purchasing it I've also rented Olds Bravada, Jeeps and Ford Explorers...wish I had of tried these before purchasing the Blazer. |

CHEAP! barely even deserves to be called an automobile. more akin to some sort of experimental aircraft in terms of refinement, reliability and quality. see my review summary for my full mad rantings. blazer LS was the absolute worst of the seven cars ive ever owned. in fact is the only one i didnt like a lot. the 2000 gave off burning smell and then would stall while driving. power (including stearing and brakes) would fail on highway. used to lurch and hesitate from stoplights or during highway cruise. had times when i pushed it or rolled it down hills. sometimes wouldnt start at all. all the warning lights made various appearances. all the while the dealer was telling me how normal this all was or how they had finally found the problem. they replaced the computer twice. the catalytic, etc.. still was a wreck. they would plug a computer into the dashboard - it would say everything was fine and theyd keep it in a corner for a few days before telling me to pick it up for the next round. chevy HQ practically accused me of scamming them for a new model. said my gas was contaminated. ridiculous. i always used mobil or exxon gas from many different and new stations. finally won an action and got a 2001 LS 4x4 (still requiring new money out of my pocket). within 10,000 miles my 2001 was a disaster also. the brakes sounded like a dying T-rex. every light on the dash had its 15 minutes of fame and never for any good or even explained reason. chevy should name this car the Service Engine Soon model, so owners dont have to constantly explain to passengers why that phrase is perpetually broadcast on the dashboard. light should say Service Engine Again! car would rumble and rattle when starting up. every friggin thing squeeked or rattled. felt like a 1970's workvan with 150k miles and a ladder strapped to the roof. i never knew what it would do next. finally gave the lease away to someone to whom id fully explained what they were getting and they took the risk knowingly. i never thought a material object like a car could become so all-troubling but when you count on it to get around and for your family's safety it really becomes very personal when your being jerked around by a big company. after two blazers there will be no third chances to jerk me over with one of these rolling garbage cans. I got a 4runner which is like a miracle from heaven compared to that garbage. i turn the key. i drive. i sleep at night. The window in the back is too high All those people dont know what they are talking about. Its all cr@p! I bought my blazer brand new and I love it. I haven't had 1 problem with it. On the other hand my brother bought a toyota landcruiser and he hates the damn thing. Driving my blazer is a reward for him! It drives like a car and you feel you have total control of the brakes! Traction control system. Body exterior and paint very good. Handling very good at any speed. Transmission will always find right gear for your power needs, at any speed. Cruise works great. No leaks on engine. Except for "weaknesses", has not left us DOR. Plenty of power for most tasks. Dealer service very good.
Weakness:
56K: tranny makes noise like RC car. Dealer finds bad torque converter, mentions problem with "OEM maker of the torque converter", fins blue then fall off. Due to towing? Nope. OEM. Dealer replaces torque converter, cleans metal pieces out of tranny, $1800 bill covered by extended warranty thanks to God. Mech suggested tranny cooler; I put the biggest one on that I could find. Tranny fluid has 40K on it, still looks and smells like new with cooler. GET A COOLER. 65K: ABS system fails. Shorted solenoid. $1100, NOT covered by warranty. Ouch. Had to use the system the next week to avoid hitting German Shepard at 45 MPH (us, not the dog). Saved amt of repairs by not hitting dog. Have had to replace brake linings three times, but we drive it pretty hard. I am getting good at doing brake linings myself. Don't buy the cheap ones! We use the semi-metallic ones sold by Autozone and get 25-30k. Lotsa rattles inside per other reports. We use earplugs on mtn roads (just kidding). With exception of tranny and ABS problems, no major repairs needed. Extremely hard to reach middle left hand sparking plug, steering column in the way. GM engineers ever tune up their own cars? I think not. When vehicle purchased at 36K miles, test drive on summer day revealed very hot engine compartment. You could not place hand on ABS or ECM computer fins. Maybe reason for ABS failure later. I removed the seals in the front and rear of the bonnet (hood) and that cured the heat problem. Get some air moving in the engine compartment, or you will be sorry. CD player won't work when it's hot and it gets REAL hot, even on cool days. Car makers need to start thinking about cooling their electronics. Sure the stuff is rated to 85 deg C, but it will last longer at 40! Fairly reliable, with exceptions noted below. Styling very nice. Lots of rattles. 4 wd traction system is the best I've ever driven, it's like a little tractor in 4 low. Unlike many vehicles I have driven in the snow and ice, this one really does go AND stop faster in 4wd. Love the pushbutton electric transfer, works flawlessly... but read on... Similar Products Used: Way better than 95 chev c10 p/u we had which was junque. Not as reliable as 1986 Caprice which needed no major repairs in 8 yrs. Come on GM you can do better than this. |

Overall, this is a piece of Junk. Everything from the radio to the alternator has been replaced. This thing eats brakes alive also. As i heard about American cars, get the extended warrenty! They will break down consistently! The only thing that has not gone wrong is the basic engine. Similar Products Used: None |
