My overall impression of this SUV is a poor one. I have had repeated troubles that the dealer has not been able to correct. I have also contacted Chevrolet about some of these issues and never heard back from them despite their claim that they respond to all complaints in 24 hours. My car has had electricla trouble, the rear motor for the wiper had to be replaced, there is a strange banging noise that will not go away, the seat handles have busted off, and now for the latest problem the car started serking when changing from 1st to second gear.

I was very excited to have bought my forst new vehicle and have been nothing but disappointed with from the first week of ownership. Now the warranty is almost up and I am oging to sell the car before I am paying through the nose for costly repairs. PLEASE LISTEN, DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!

Strength:

The engine is the strongest part of the blazer. The 2.8L has given me no problems whatsoever. It even survived without coolant for almost 3000 miles. Hey 4.3L blazers, I may have less power, but I save more money by keeping the same engine!

Weakness:

The transmission is deffinately the weakest link here, that and the paint job.

This year model blazer is the best for off-road use. Although it doesnt compare to the full-size blazer, this S-10 SUV can tear up the trails and local trips to the grocery store.

Strength:

the blazer is certainly a go anywhere vehicle. our '96 has run flawlessly since we bought it new in '96. the truck is fantastic in snow! it's actually fun passing all the *one-wheel* drive cars stuck in the snow.

Weakness:

we bought the full time four wheel drive which was a mistake. you loose fuel efficiency with this. full time 4wd is a waste of money. especially with 4wd on the fly available now. space - the blazer has plenty of room for 2 people to go camping or skiing, but 3 or more and your maxing the trucks space out. we added a thule box to the roof for some relief. it helped somewhat. but for a family of four to go skiing or camping, the blazer is just too small. think long and hard about how you're going to use this truck. if you have a family that you're traveling with in an active way, at some point you'll think about adding a cargo trailer to the mix (new $2K). another thing, if your new to the sport utility scene, get used to driving a top heavy vehicle. the stance could stand to be a little wider on the blazer.

(pre 1997 Model) - overall, we love the way the blazer performs. however, our family has grown out of it though. packing it for weekend get aways has become too challenging and stressful.

Strength:

Roomy, plenty of power, great looking

Weakness:

Price (like all SUV's!), gas mileage (like all SUV's!)

(1999 Model) - I bought the truck new after some moron ran a red light and destroyed my Cherokee. No complaints after 7 months. I got the locking rear differential and the automatic 4WD, which is nice on slick roads. I noticed a few places where I was slipping and sliding in the Cherokee, without those features, were no problem in the Blazer. There's plenty of room inside, especially since the spare is underneath, and not inside like a lot of SUV's. It has much less wind noise than the Cherokee, and less than a few other SUV's that I test drove as well.

Strength:

Fun to drive, great in snow. Comfortable seats (when they work).

Weakness:

Everything not mentioned above. Trust me, you can do better. Shoddy construction.

This is the second 2-door Blazer that I have owned, and while I admit to a deep, abiding love for the car, I also admit that the love is virtually unreasonable. My current car has 124,000 miles on it, and has done fairly well: no major (with the exception of an alternator and a transmission) repairs, just the standard tires replaced, oil change, etc. So why the poor rating? For the money that one spends on this car, you should get more. Just last December the door handle on the driver's side broke off and had to replaced at a cost of $150 (including labor). The car, just like my last Blazer, is LOUD. Not just due to engine noise, but the interior squeaks! It is almost unbearable without the radio on, which I can see other Blazer owners have noted. Which brings us to another problem: the radio works intermittently (you have to press the "on" button just right) and the tape deck has developed a taste for my cassettes on several occasions. Not only is the car interior loud, the car itself squeaks, and not just minor squeaks, either. It has become embarrassing to drive it. I assume the car is rusting out, or some other item (struts?) is causing the loud squeaking. The bottom of the car is rusting out, especially near the mudflaps in the rear and near the doors; you could probably put your foot through the rust areas. The center console lid is broken off, and the cup holder cracked. The rear seat is difficult to get in and out of; definitely not recommended for families. the passenger seat is broken and does not sit completely upright, a problem encountered by my brother with his Blazer. The hatchback window no longer stays up on its own when you open it, a problem that occured in my first Blazer. The passenger side power window doesn't work. The heating element broke a few winters ago and had to be replaced (no heat in a Chicago winter!). The a/c stopped working 2 years ago. And just recently, my rearview mirror fell off. Given the age and mileage on this car, perhaps all of this is to be expected, but for a car this expensive, I want more. Did I mention that I don't trust this vehicle enough to take it on a trip more than an hour from my home? You can get better for your money. Buy foreign!!! I expect to get rid of this car soon. I never want to buy American again, especially Chevy.

Strength:

Attractive Styling.

Weakness:

Characteristic Coolant System problems. Assorted other fixes. Too many problems for a vehicle with just over 40K miles.

Given all the posts I've seen about the Blazer's coolant problems, I would have expected the dealer's service department would have been better able to diagnose and fix the problem.

Previous car was a Honda Accord and my next vehicle will be a Honda Odyssey. I wouldn't buy another Chevy/GM product if they offered a $10,000 cash back. Will take whatever the dealer offers on a trade-in, as I could not, in good conscience, sell this vehicle to another owner.

Strength:

Great looking. The 4x4 is great in snow. Nice sound on the CD stero system.

Weakness:

Idiotic design! Unless you have keyless entry (which should be standard when you drop $35K, but isn't) there is no way of opening the rear hatch unless the entire vehicle is unlocked - there is no key entry on the hatch! So, to get stuff out of the trunk like hockey equipment, you have to leave the truck unlocked, open the hatch, get out your stuff, put it down, then go to the driver or passenger's door, lock the truck, pick your stuff back up, then go. Then do the reverse later after the game. What a pain!!!!!!!!

The mounted spare tire blocks out about the bottom third of the driver's view out the back of the truck. This is bad enough, but get this - the rear hatch's windshield whipper only whipes the area obscured by the spare tire. So the whipper's only purpose in rain or snow is to give you a better view of the spare tire!

The rubber drink holder liners that look like a great idea when at the dealership ("makes it easier to clean"), lift out and stick to the can or bottle when you take your drink out of the holder.

And some other typical GM stuff: The mileage sucks. I have a bunch of different noises that the dealership claims are the product of too low tire pressure (which is bull because they check the pressure every three months when I take to them for sheduled maintenance!!!!), or "standard" engine noises (more bull, but not unusual for a GM dealership). The vehicle felt great on the road for about the first 10K (kilometers), but then loosened up fast, and now feels like crap on the road. And all that plastic in the interior makes it sound like it was made of Lego when I'm on anything but pristine, newly paved road.

Crap! This is my third Blazer and without doubt the last GM product I will every own. I worked at a company owned by GM and having seen that company's mentality, and how they coddle the dealerships (those guys are snakes!) and the drunk and stoned, grade 3 educated bozos that put these vehicles together, this vehicle's poor quality is no surprize.

Comfortable interior. Looks good going down the highway. Lots of options available.

Weakness:

Rattles - rattles - rattles. Always seems to need some kind of repair. Poor quality.

I finally got my first 4-wheel drive SUV. My '98 Blazer looks beautiful sitting in the driveway. But I don't have to wonder now why the original owner got rid of it at 28,000 mi. In the 6 months I've owned it, all these things have happened: CD player wouldn't work - they replaced it with a reconditioned one; the first time it snowed I discovered the 4-wheel drive wouldn't work - I was without it for 3 days while they ordered a part; then there was transmission fluid leaking - replaced gasket; next came an oil leak; then a rattle/vibration in the dashboard - something was loose; now it needs new ball joints and a serpentine belt. And the worst of all are the RATTLES - I've never owned anything that seems so poorly put together. Junk. My last vehicle was a Honda - I owned it 6 full years and it was trouble-free - only needed regular oil changes and tires. The Chevy Blazer was my LAST American-made vehicle I'm sorry to say. GM should be ashamed.

Most parts under the hood.

I bought this truck because of the deal I got on it. I can now understand why the sticker said 28,000 and I paid just 22,000. The battery blew at 20,000 miles, not their fault, but they didn't replace the brake cable the acid ate through. The stearing control arm had to be replaced. Wiper moter went out, found out it was defective during a rain strom. Fuel pump moter was next to give out. Oxygen sensor went at about 45,000 miles. Finally the rear end went at 66,000. Almost had to sue the dealership for that one. The fuel injectors had to be changed after 90,000 miles. I have changed the front brakes 4 times and the alternator once. Oh, I just dropped it off this morning. Check engine light came on.
