Strength:

Power, Comfort, Ease of driving for the size and turning radius.

Weakness:

The rear windows dont go down far enough, and when they are down there is an awful noise that resonates throughout the vehicle at highway speeds. AC wont hold a charge. Gas mileage and Brake rotors feel warped.

Overall I love the Tahoe, especially the power.

This is my second review, thought I would give an update. This vehicle is still by far the best vehicle we have ever owned. Engine power and handling continues to impress us upon entering the highways and driving through LA traffic! We have taken many long trips since owning this vehicle and it continues to offer a smooth and comfortable ride. My husband has driven all the full size SUV's(used as cop vehicles) on a regular basis as he has been a military cop for over 20 years. His oppinion stands that this is one of the best full size SUV's he has driven. His current cop vehicle is a Ford Expedition, not very well suited for off roading or extreme driving conditions. Access to controls on dash is great, as the dash is angled towards the driver,ME w/who is only 5'0). Third row seating with headrest is very comfortable and the front and rear AC controls has prooven to be a huge benefit. Keep in mind, when I say comfort, I'm talking my husband who is over 200lbs, two tall teen sons and a large 100lb dog, can find all have our own space when traveling, YES!

Weakness:

None we can think of, but will submit an update if one occurs. But our local Chevy dealer is pretty sorry as far as saleman are concern. So we purchase this vehicle via internet and drove 4 hours to pick it up, which was worth the trip in order to get the better deal!

I still recommend this vehicle. If our family was still a small one, we would've stuck with the Rodeo. But I can honestly say, it has been a real joy to own this vehicle, and FINALLY have the room while traveling, which we do often.

We currently own an Isuzu Rodeo, and husband has driven almost all full size SUV's except Excursion on the job. We did enjoy the Navigator, it performs the same as the Tahoe.

Strength:

Features are excellent. A beast off road, yet rides great. Very roomy in 2 door form--would not own 4 door due to extra size and overhang offroad. Smooth ride--good handling. Absolutely best featured vehicle I've ever owned.

Weakness:

Like all others, problems with brakes being mushy. Fluid res. almost empty, yet dealer says no leaks. Fuel pump already defective (30,000 miles)dealer replaced under warranty. CD player went out. Hope this truck doesn't have to spend excessive time at dealer in future due to defects.

I would recommend it for people who are going to keep the vehicle and don't mind a few trips to the mechanic. If you don't care about offroad ability and need dependability seems like you shouldn't buy a Chevy.

1997 Z71 Silverado, 1990 Dodge Ramcharger--ramcharger was defect ridden, underpowered. Silverado had some minor flaws-ABS lost power over bumps (strayed) alternator and starter had to be replaced at 25,000 miles-defective.

Strength:

Great looks, roomy and comfortable interior. Good power.

Weakness:

When I bought it, the air conditioning wasn't working properly. I would tell the air to come out of the front vents and it would come out of the floor vents. The rear air conditioning didn't work at all. The dealer had to replace the air conditioning computer.
At about 5,000 miles the transmission started jerking from first to second. I brought it back to the dealer and after a week of testing, GM gave them the go ahead to replace the whole transmission. No problems with it since (I'm now at 15,000 miles).
The brakes started squeaking early.
I am now having problems with the windows. First, the driver's and right rear window wouldn't work. After a few days they miraculously started working again. This came at the expense, however, of the Passenger and left rear window. Now there is a recall regarding loose or missing rear wheelhouse plugs which, I'm told, can lead to exhaust fumes entering in the car.

If you buy this car, definitely get the extended warranty. It’s an American car, enough said. Instead of highly motivated workers, we have lazy union guaranteed-a-job workers who don't care if they install a broken A/C unit or faulty transmission in a car before it leaves the factory. Good Job Detroit.

Lots of power from a 5.7 Liter vortec. Strong on and off road. 311,000 true miles of nothing but pure comfortable power. Purchased with 300,260 miles.

Weakness:

Handling isn't the best in the world but what can you expect out of a stock SUV like a Tahoe. Reverse isn't the best in the world.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fully loaded, comfortable, powerful, roomy, good looking vehicle.

Strength:

The 5300 Vortec engine is the only way to go. Going up steep grades is not a problem, getting on the throttle to merge onto the freeway gives me goosebumps. As big of an engine as it has (5.3L V8), the Tahoe gets great gas mileage. If equipped with the bucket seating, the driver and front passenger seats can be adjusted to accomodate practically any height and size.
In the first two days of owning the Tahoe, I put over 1700 miles on it, and trust me, the suspension on this truck gave me the feeling of almost gliding on air. Also, as mentioned in many other reviews, the handling of the Tahoe is similar to that of a car's. Some people may dislike this aspect, but I think it is one of the Tahoe's biggest strengths. If you drive through any kind of traffic, you will greatly appreciate the way this truck handles. The turning radius on this truck is relatively tight for it's size and makes those U-turns/3-pt. turns/parallel parkings a walk in the park.
The Tahoe is virtually a tank (as the case with most full size SUVs) which should make the passegners feel very safe. Although if the sheer size isn't enough, the Tahoe comes equipped (standard I believe) with dual front airbags, and side impact airbags as well. As far as any kind of road side assistance is concerned, I recieved a free year of the ON-STAR SYSTEM.
Well, I can't say enough good things about this truck, so for the sake of time, I will conclude this section.

Weakness:

As many of the great features the Tahoe has, I do have a few complaints. The biggest of these complaints is that the rear passengers do not get enough leg room. I had a Toyota 4Runner and it seems that there is only a marginal difference in leg room between these two SUVs. In this regard, the Ford Expedition (if that is what you are also considering) clearly has the advantage. Another weakness about the Tahoe is that there is no locking mechanism for the gas port? hole? (where you put in the gas). I admit, this is a minor issue, but I was dissapointed by this fact.

If a full size SUV is what you are looking for, I would highly recommend the 2001 Tahoe. Originally, I was set on a Ford Expedition, and I would have probably bought the Ford if I did not happen to stop at a Chevy dealership. I test drove both the Tahoe and the Expedition, and the power in the Tahoe absolutely blew me away. If you do ultimately decide to purchase the Expedition over the Tahoe, I would be lying if I told you that you made a horrible choice. I still believe that the Expedition is a good vehicle, but as I mentioned, once I test drove the Tahoe, I just had to have it.

Similar Products Used:

Compared to the Ford Expedition (which originally, was the SUV I wanted), the Tahoe has much more power, and seems to have a much more proven reliability as far as drivetrain is concerned. As I mentioned, the Expedition does seem to have a little more interior room, which wasn't a significant issue for me.
I have also owned a Toyota 4Runner for 10 years, and in my opinion, there is no basis for comparison since the 4Runners are notorious for their underpowered engine (although the 4Runners do last forever). The difference between comfort with the 4Runner and the Tahoe is radical. The Tahoe has so much more head/leg room, it is like comparing my house to the Hearst Castle.

Strength:

Powerful, roomy, great ride, A/C, 4-wheel drive, comfort. Reliable--not one mechanical problem. Only regular oil/filter changes, new tires every 40,000 miles or so.

Weakness:

Weak front air dam, front impact strip was loosely installed but was replaced under warranty and remains in place.

This Tahoe was ordered during August 1996 in Quicksilver/Onyx Black (1997 was the last year Quicksilver was offered as a color) and with almost every option available. We had to wait a year and it arrived just days before my family was to leave on a long 3 1/2 week trip that would take us cross-country.

It was worth the wait. Going cross-country allowed us to put this SUV through its paces, and it never failed to deliver. It was off-road in the mountains of Colorado, through the heat of California with the A/C on, and even went through a light snow storm in the Bear Tooth mountains, all without a single mechanical problem. We were never disappointed. By the end of the trip, we had put nearly 8000 miles on it, and this was within the first month of its life.

Even today, as it approaches 100,000 miles, it still has not had a single problem. For those who want a vehicle that is comfortable, capable off-road, good at hauling a trailer, and can handle just about any condition, the Tahoe is ideal.

The only real problems would only be with gas mileage (which is ok--16-27 MPG), considering the cost of gasoline today, and the weak front air dam.

Gas mileage, smooth ride.

Weakness:

Since I have owned this vehicle it has been repaired so many times that I can't even remember everything that has had to be repaired. These are the items that quickly come to mind;
The volrtec engine has been rebuilt TWO times! The fuel pump has been replaced twiced, the starter has been replaced, the lumbar in the seats go out on a regular basis, an electricle surge continues to happen which blows out the fuse that operates the door locks and the rear hatch. So far, after numerous times to the repair shop, the problem is unable to be diagnoised. These are the big items that should scare any consumer away!

I would tell anyone looking at a Tahoe to run in the other direction with your check book in hand! My son owns a 1998 truck which also has had the vortec engine fail and after 1,000 dollars later he is still having problems. His horror stories are worse than mine! Although the size of this vehicle is nice and roomy and the gas mileage is very good there is a reason why "Consumers Buyer Guide" has the 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe listed on their page of used cars to stay away from.

Strength:

Really big, gigantic cargo area, very roomy seating, rides great, very powerful, very comfortable, good looking truck, handles pretty good (it IS a big truck, not a performance sedan).

Weakness:

The brakes are way too spongy. You really need a lot of pedal travel to stop it. They also don't last very long. We basically knew this up front, though. A front brake job is easy to do. Although, I didn't expect that it would need one at 10,000 miles. They glazed. GM took care of it under warranty with no fuss. Gas mileage is a common complaint, but let's get real. It's a big truck with a powerful V-8. You don't buy a big SUV for gas mileage. We get around 13 city and 17 highway (with a rather heavy foot). That's really not all that bad.

It's really good large SUV. However, you DO get the luck of the draw with GM. Their quality isn't consistent. You'll find some that go the distance with hardly a problem and some that just have a lot of problems. Sure I'd recommend it. I haven't driven the redesigned 2000, but it's way too expensive.
