Strength:

Extremely roomy. Rides better than mom's Cadilac STS. More power than other SUVs in any class. I have towed a couple of boats 18-30ft. and it did great. Best 4wd system on the market aside from Land Rover and Hummer.
A wolf (rugged dependable, performance, usability) in sheeps clolthing (luxury looks, styling, comfort)

Weakness:

Breaking is definitely the most noticeable weak point. After 10k miles, change the pads. After you turn the rotors for the 1st time, they just get worse from there on out. We have been experiencing 100+ degree temps and the air conditioning could use a dose of the old R12 refrigerant instead of the noticeably weak 134a.

Sticker MSRP:40,645
I paid $31,822. Before you get any ideas, that is with a General Motors Employee discount. The general public will have to pay a little more.
Excellent vehicle. Luxury, Comfort, Useability, and a pleasure to drive.
I even enjoy driving in snow when I go to Chicago. AutoTrac makes it easy to drive in all types of harsh conditions with confidence and control.
This is one of the safest vehicles on the road. Would you rather have your wife and kids riding in anything lesser? The stance, weight, and sheer size of the Tahoe are more of a safety feature than dual air bags, side impact door beams, and ABS;all of which the Tahoe has and more.

Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion, and Lincoln Navigator don't even compare. Durango will perform, but thats all you can say. The Fords don't come close in power or handling, but do come close with interiors

Strength:

Ride, engine power, 4 disc breaks, comfort

Weakness:

Gas mileage (but better than competitors), audio systems not as good as in the Grand Cherokee's, old/truck like styling.

I am very impressed with the ride quality of the new Tahoe.
Workmanship quality is excellent. I just wish the styling would be a bit more modern.

Model Reviewed: /LT 4WD

Strength:

The ride is extremely comfortable, and space is in abundance. 3 adults can honestly fit in the 2nd row without feeling cramped. The 3rd row seat adds flexibility not available in compact SUVs, but can be easily removed for traditional cargo hauling. Feels very refined for a Chevy product, and it looks damn good.

Weakness:

The sound system is not up to par with the rest of the vehicle. Also, even high end LTs do not come with accessories found in cheaper vehicles (e.g. fender flares, mudflaps, hitch cover).

MSRP: Over 40K. Yes, I would highly recommend this vehicle, although some may want to upgrade the weaknesses I charted earlier.
Early in the model year, it was difficult to find dealerships that would offer even modest discounts on these vehicles, which made the decision between them and competitors such as the Expedition and Durango, difficult. With a good discount though, I believe this is easily the best long term choice.
I would highly recommend the new Tahoes to (1) previous owners of compact SUVs who want more room but not that "I'm driving a Semi" feeling, (2) mid sized families who just cant picture themselves in a minivan, (3) Singles with very active lifestyles and lots of outdoor toys.

Strength:

Incredibly roomy, great power and great looking.

Weakness:

Unbelievably poor craftmanship with interior door post coverings cracking within 6 months of purchase. The vehicle basically functioned okay until 50,000 miles. I now have 86,000 miles and the following items have malfunctioned since 50,000 miles: air conditioner compressor (50k); water pump (51k); battery cables and posts (52k); fuel sending unit and fuel lines (55k); brake rotors (55k); alternator (75k); brake booster (85k); three different computer chips (65k-85k); intake valve for manifold (85k); and numerous others. The total costs of repairs, not including routine service and maintenance, has been almost $5,000.

I paid $28,000 for the vehicle, brand new. This is, without a doubt, the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I serviced the vehicle every 3,000 miles and had all regularly scheduled 7,500 mileage check-ups and service. I am deeply disappointed in the Tahoe. I rarely see any other negative reviews, but I certainly cannot recommend this vehicle. I will never buy another Chevy or GM product.

Strength:

Good power. Extremely comfortable for 5. Good towing. Great cargo hauler. Good off-road. Great snow/bad weather.

Weakness:

Spongy brakes. Weak Air Conditioning

Paid $28,000 new in 1995. We have 125,000 flawless miles consisting of moderate off-road and lots of highway. Been from one coast to the other with 2 adults, 3 kids, luggage, coolers and car seats. Plenty of room and comfort for all.
I dare you to find another SUV for under $30,000 that could fit 3 car seats EASILY across in the back seat (with room to spare)!
Replaced tires once, brakes 3 times and all other routine maintenance at 5000-7500 miles.
It still looks great inside and out.

Strength:

Great family car, Excellent Power (5.3L), handling, comfort/ride.

Weakness:

Spongy Brakes.
Fuel Milage...But I knew fuel milage would not be great when I bought it!
Running Boards to narrow.

Excellent Vehicle. Spent about 4 months researching SUV's.
Toyota Land Cruiser / LX470 were the only comparable vehicles. They were $15-30K more.

Was stopped twice by police highway patrol...Wanted to know how I liked the vehicle. (That must be there way of conducting research)
The car rides and handles well over moderate bumps, however, you will feel a jolt over big bumps. Stereo system is very good, Front and rear climate control system is very powerful. I especially like the "Quick Cool Down" & Heat Up function.(The fan sounds just like a jet engine winding up.)
The 3rd. row seat is really for children. They easily fold-up and remove.

Strength:

Incredibly smooth and comfortable considering the size and reputation of SUV's. Driving the Tahoe is like driving a Luxury car with a lift.

Weakness:

Not so great gas mileage, rear air is only A/C no heat control for back passengers.

We walked on the lot at just the perfect time and were able to take the Z71 off the lot for $3500 less than invoice, I saw it. I'd recommend this to anyone who can afford the gas to drive it, or for pulling a boat and other toys. As far as price goes you can choose between the Trooper, Montero, Explorer, 4Runner, and others all of which are V6. I think the Tahoe is a lot more Auto for the money.

Isuzu Trooper, the Tahoe is built with more quality in parts as well as structure. It seems much safer and is definetly heavier.

Strength:

great handling and visibility for large vehicle , especially by a small driver (5'). The best car I've ever owned in all respects. very roomy for family of 5 (3 full grown kids)and dog. can't say enough about visibility from all windows.

Weakness:

only room for 5? rear windows could open more. difficulty in stopping in rain on two occasions, believe due to weight, and momentum. gas mileage, but not surprising for size.

vehicle leased, should have purchased it as it is too costly to buy it now. Love it and hate to give it up, especially since subsequent "improvements" especially 2000 redesign have all been negatives in my opinion. 96-99 models are by far the most popular SUV I see. It wasn't broke, why tinker with a winner? New 2000 model such a disappointment, rear side windows useless and new seats cut off any visibility useful for parking, and new look so un-chevy like.

Similar Products Used:

first truck, so I can't compare rides, but visually, classic good looks beat competition hands down.
