Strength:

Powerful 5.9L, Comfortable seats, quiet and well layed out interior, great exterior styling, reliable and safe.

Weakness:

Some interior plastic is not up to the quality of the rest of the vehicle, gas milage, but it is really not any worse than my previous V6 Blazer.

Outstanding SUV. We have had our dark green Durango SLT Plus 2WD 5.9L for exactly one trouble-free year. The Durango is powerful, stylish and great fun to drive. It reminds me of the muscle cars of my youth. So far our Durango has proven to be very well built and has been a wonderful, long distance cruiser.

Gas - it's no !@#$ Honda people!

Would buy another in a second. In fact I already did, this is my second Durango. Used to have '99 SLT, love it too.

Strength:

After my experience, there are no strengths. I'm worried about the engine, the brakes, and the airbags.

Weakness:

Chrysler absolutely refuses to take accountability or responsibility for the failure of the oil pumps in this automobile. They do not back this car through regular or extended warranty. Research the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website for Safety Issues and Problems with this car and you will be stunned. Search Dodge Truck, Durango, 1999 or whatever year you are interested in. Also search the website The Complaint Station for Chrysler products.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT but this automobile. I bought the car because I wanted something bigger than a traditional SUV but was tired of driving a mini-van. This was a real step up, the most expensive car I've owned. Oil pump failed at 38,000 miles and cracked the engine. I was sure I was protected by my extended warranty but Chrysler refused to honor it claimimg negligence. We routinely maintenanced car (far more that the recommended 7500 miles in the owner's manual) but because we couldn't provided receipts for every 3000 miles Chrysler said oil sludge was our problem and a $5000-6000 repair. After extensive research on the internet, I've found this is a common problem with 1998-1999 models between 20,000 and 50,000 miles. Just received and email from an owner of a 2000 model with the same problem. Owners who could produce receipts were accused of forging the documents and lying and Chrysler is across the board and across the nation refusing to acknowledge it's liability in this oil sludge/engine repair problem. Delaer kept my car for 6 months while negotiations with Chrysler and dealer went no where. Fianlly paid independent repair place $4000 to replace engine, transmission, oil pump..basically the entire guts of the car. Got it back and the passenger window doesn't work. Guess I'll have to find a dealer to repair what is apparently another common problem. I don't know how to get out from under the lease.

I've driven Toyotas, Mazdas, and Hondas that never needed anything but routine maintenance and brake pads.

Strength:

Many. Good looking truck all toghether. Powerful 5.9 engine, I blow away everyone in the Durango. VERY reliable, have had no problems whatsoever. Leather seating. The extra 3rd row seat comes in handy.

Weakness:

VERY outdated interior, For other vehicles made in 1999 it could have been better organized. THe interior is exactly like a 1993 Grand Cherokee. Gas mileage is TERRIBLE. Other then that the truck is wonderful.

If I had to buy one again I would. We have had only minor problems, rust under the outside window panel, and needed new breaks at 34k. The good definatly outweighs the bad. I still feel about it the Duragno now as I did the day I bought it. This car is definatly a keeper.

1994 Ford Explorer XLT, the explorer has had so many problems and is very slow. The durango blows it out of the water.

Strength:

roominess.

Weakness:

poor gas mileage, Poor power, Horrible pinging and knocking sound at high RPM's and especially when towing trailer, power windows constantly going out, very rough suspension.

The power windows constantly brake. At higher rpm's the vehicle makes a horrible pinging and knocking sound that 4 different Dodge service centers cannot figure out. They say it is normal.
We only have 28000 miles and have had it back for warranty work on 9 differnt occasions.
I would not reccomend a Durango to my worst enemy.

Strength:

Styling, Size, and Value

Weakness:

- Gas Mileage stinks in the 4.7 V8 AT 4x4
- Audio system - I burn my own CDs that play in all CD players except the one in the Durango (I've been told that Dodge has purchased old technology in some audio systems players). Plan to replace with Pioneer.

No problems except cable in steering wheel can loose and no controls on steering wheel worked (including air bag). Dealer picked it up and replaced cable and spring mech. and delivered back to my house. You don't see that much anymore.

Similar Products Used:

Ford Explorer - Not as roomy and peppy as the Durango.

Strength:

Solid performer, nice looks, decent ride for a truck, been very reliable, plenty of room for 5, has taken a massive beating from the kids and never complained

Weakness:

likes fuel

Had it since they first came out, got the first one at the dealer (ordered it months ahead). 3 Kids needed 3 rows of seats and the expidition won't fit the garage. Have had absoutely no reliability problems other than the battery died. Have done nothing to it, except beat on it with family life. One of the seat belt buckles broke from which they replaced, but this was the only bruise that was wear induced.

Will buy another one when the lease comes up in 2 months.

power, large interior, style (of course).

Weakness:

gas milage (of course)

yes, recomend to anyone who drives with both hands on the steering wheel, cos', if you hit a bump in a high speed curve (happens often in new york), the steering will fight you like mike! gas milage is always at pain at the pump, but i don't see myself easing up on the throttle. my last car was a z27. different power, but similar torque. 5.9 liters are awesome with the chip!!

Strength:

- Very comfortable seats
- Infinity Sound System is EXCELLENT
- Handles extremely well
- Braking is great
- Aggresive sytling
- Power when you need it
- Roomy seating & storage space
- Smooth ride when on the expressway/highway
- Power seats make any driver comfortable
- Low highway noise
- VERY simple cruise control, best I have EVER seen
- A head turner, but not as much as it was when first introduced
- Large gas tank (25 gal) means fewer fillups

Weakness:

- Transmission is a little quirky sometimes
- Gas guzzler, I average 13.4 MPG w/ the 5.2 V8
- Bumpy ride.. some larger bumps actually make you leave the seat
- Rear A/C problems.. to be repaired soon when my warranty info comes in

I bought my Forest Green 1998 SLT Durango for $19,600 with 37,000 miles on it... was like brand new when I bought it. Only problem I have had was rear air conditioning.. all it does is churn our hot air.

The quality of it is very good, the only other SUV that it can be compared to (in terms of styling) is the Toyota Land Cruiser, which costs twice as much. The car rides very nice when on the highway but sometimes hitting a small hump in the road can send you to the ceiling (if you're not buckled up.)

City driving is going to be the clincher when it comes to trying to conserve gas. It costs me roughly $40 to fill my Durango up and that gets me around 315 miles. If aren't looking to spend much money on gas, look elsewhere. The V6 even gets a misley 15 mpg, but if power is what you want then be prepared to get 12-13 with the various V8 set-ups.

Good quality car, I have only noticed a few rattles that havr gone away quickly.. sounds very soundproof on the highway. Would recommend.
