Weakness:

Air Conditioner blows hot air and engine revs after idleing.

For anyone considering the purchase of a Dodge Durango, please do your homework first and save yourself a lot of hard- earned money and tons of unnecessary grief.

We purchased a brand new 2005 Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 in February of 2005. By April of the same year, we discovered that the air conditioner did NOT work. In fact, it simply blew hot air which made driving a miserable experience in even the mildest warm weather. That was repair attempt number one. Throughout the summer, constant troubles continued with the a/c. To this day, not even a year and 1/2 after buying our brand new vehicle, we can't even drive the thing in warm weather because the a/c blows such hot air. After more than seven attempts to have the problem repaired, we are going to let the attorneys handle it under the Lemon Law. There's just no sense in throwing away so much money on a new vehicle that cannot be utilized fully and comfortably. Remember -- if you have had a similar problem, look into the Lemon Law for your state and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Strength:

Hauling capabilities are all you could ask for, passenger windows roll all the way down for maximum comfort, cargo holds are plentiful and easily accessed from every where, there are a plethora of AC outlets all over the truck, including four in the rear cargo compartment. A full size air mattress can be blown up in the rear compartment with no problem.

Weakness:

None so far...

We bought our Durango on July fourth weekend of 2004. After two years of owndership, we are just as much in love with this beauty as when we first drove away in it. Our truck has taken us all over the country, and as a military family, we have been on the move quite a bit. Our Durango has never slowed us down and has been a pleasure. Though many people complain about the gas mileage, it is worth every penny. We owned a V6 sedan before the truck and had worse mileage before the upgrade. This is the most beautiful, rugged, powerful vehicle I have ever owned and I have no regrets. The long Iowa winters have been pleasant with the 4WD and the V8 has been able to haul anything we can find. To date we have moved with this truck three times, moved our friends five times and been comfortable through it all. The ride is comfortable and relaxing with plenty of room for everyone. We have never had any problems with the truck and have put 40K on it since the purchase. With regular maintenence a Durango will last you a lifetime!

DONT BUY A DURANGO. I bought this vehicle with 28,000 miles on it and already I've had to replace the upper and lower ball joints at $1600, The stereo stopped working, replaced. Now the passenger windows front and back dont work anymore. The last straw is the transmission just blew out 2nd gear. This job just cost me $2200.00 more. My Durango only has 92,000 miles on it and it is basically junk. I have freinds with toyotas and nissans with over 160k miles on them and still running great not too mention better gas mileage. Yeah, the Durango has great power, but at 13 miles per gallon I should be able to burn rubber on a 1/4 mile strip. You would think after all this work on my truck I would be able to trade in or sell, $4500 is all I can get after my investment of $5000 in the last 6 months to get it running.
My next obivious choice will be Toyota or Nissan. Sorry America...I'll give up some horse power for reliability

Have not found one yet. Grand kids like the DVD player, but don't they all have that?

Weakness:

Transmission. Service. Reliability. Cost. Gas mileage.

Owned 06 dodge darango for 3 months, took one trip up north with 1000 miles on it and the check engine light came on and the transmission stopped working (went into limp mode). Middle of June and the air conditioner went out, both problems persisted for 800 miles over two days. Took it to dealer when we got home, and they see the storred failure, but the check engine light had extinguished before they saw it. They can't find any problem and they think that some sensor was stuck or overheated. I have to take another trip and can't trust this 36,000 dollar vehicle out of my driveway. If nowbody is experiecing any transmission problems, than mine must be bad, but that would be too easy for them, they would like to put me 1000 miles away again to make sure. Customer service stinks. Dodge Darango stinks. During the few highway miles that it did work it was getting far less than reported mileage on flat interstate.

Gas Mileage

I am a mechanic and I have worked on many durangos and have never had any transmission problems. My R/T runs smooth as can be, has exceptional handling and acceleration, and the styling is great. The only problem is the GAS MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE!!! But that is expected with a large all-time four wheel drive 5.9 V-8 SUV. Mine is now 6 years old and the carfax came back almost perfect when I bought it with a minor power window problem probably related to water damage(leaving the window open when it rains). I have had no problems. I have delt with transmission problems with performance trucks especially the chevy extremes and the reason for these problems is that idiots try to use the automatic transmission as a manual and force shift it, then when the transmission drops they wonder why. USE THE TRANSMISSION AS IT IS INTENDED AND YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS!!!! Also try changing your fluids more than once a decade and you will be surprised at the outcome.

What started off as a great investment, has now put me in the poor house!! Luckily I have an extended warranty, but let me say this.... DO NOT BUY A DODGE!!! I have definitely learned my lesson!! The transmission is garbage in these trucks.. I have been car less for about 2 months now.. The transmisson already has over 6,000 dollars into it and it still doesn't work right. Every part has been replaced in it and now the dealership doesn't know what else to do and engineering at Dodge headquarters, can't even figure out what the problem is. When I am on the expressway and I hit the gas to pass someone, it hits the rev limiter.. Will this ever get fixed?? Who knows!! The hood began to rust, along with the tailgate.. So I replaced both of those.. The leather on the steering wheel melts to your hands!! I only have 60,000 miles on it! The truck looks good parked.. Thats about it!! Unfortunately I am strapped for cash so I am stuck with it for now.. Dodge does not stand behind their customer's as I have asked for them to look into the problem I am haveing, and since its out of their warranty they said it's not their problem!! Whose problem is it then?? Their own engineering can't even figure out why my truck is acting the way it is.. It's a sad sad story!! My buddy has a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the transmission went out at 10,000 miles. I think Chrysler in general needs to focus more on their transmissions, and not so much on their styling.. I am extremely frustrated with my truck as you can tell, and I am fair warning you people, don't buy a Durango/Dodge vehicle!! They are junk!! No matter how nice they look, they are not worth the money!! I am at a loss of words now... I hope I have pursuaded you people to never look into buying a dodge! They are junk, and very ignorant, and wont stand behind their vehicle!!! If you choose not to listen to me, you will find out, just like I did and will be kicking yourself in the @ss for not listening to me...

UPDATE: This morning I called the Customer Service center in Orlando Florida. Mr Armstrong after speaking with the dealership made the decision to repair my vehicle ALL of it for $200 deductible. He said the dealership really stood behind me. This goes to show you that if you get to the right person and the dealership wants to help you then you can get things done. Thank you Chrysler, AND MOST OF ALL , Peidmont Chrysler. I love my Durango and you just saved a customer.

Looks, why would they put so much time and effort into the looks of the vehicle to sell it and then not stand behind it and loose repeat buyers?

Weakness:

transmission, center console lid

I have read all reviews on this product and it is not the product but how the manufacturer handles the complaints on its product. My Durango was wonderful too untill the transmission went out at 45000 miles!! I am told this is a manufacture defect and that the bolts fell out of the transmission and into the clutches, stripping all the clutches. The dealership has been wonderful and is backing me 100% however DaimlerChrysler doesn't care. This is a $2800 repair that has apparently happened to others as well. I was told by DaimlerChrysler that I should have purchased an extended warranty!! Man if only I would have known that the transmission was going to go out at 45000 miles i would have ! Better yet I would have chose another manufacturer! I have reported this to the BBB and to consumer affairs and hopefully will get some help. But right now I am stuck with a very nice looking statue.

I love my Durango. Hate the gas mileage. It rides really nice. So far no problems. The stereo is awesome. I thought all Durango's had a 3rd seat. Mine doesn't wish it did. The tape player is the only thing that doesnt work. Really a great truck so far. Had it this Winter with a lot of snow. It handled it really great!
