Ford Bronco (1996 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Ford Bronco is a sport utility vehicle that was produced from 1966 to 1996, with five distinct generations. The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), intended to compete primarily with Jeep CJ models and the International Harvester Scout. The redesign of the second generation Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened full sized F-100 pickup. It had a removable top and forward folding rear bench seat, similar to the competing Blazer.

(1980 - 1986) The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series pick-up truck. The new Bronco was shorter, and had cosmetic changes along with powertrain, suspension and other odds and ends.

(1992 - 1996) The Ford Bronco, along with the F-Series truck, was updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with safety in mind, incorporating front crumple zones, rear shoulder seat belts, a third brakelight embedded in the removable top, and after 1994, driver-side airbags.

Strength:

THE BRONCO IS THE ULTIMATE 4X4. STRENGTHS:DURABILITY, IMPRESSIVE LOOKS, THE BRONCO STANDS OUT IN A CROWD. THE 351W PROVIDES PLENTY OF POWER FOR THE BRONCO. I TOTALLED MY 1ST BRONCO(82XLT) T-BONED AN OLDS CUTLASS & WALKED AWAY W/ A BUSTED SHOULDER,PEOPLE AT THE ACCIDENT WERE SURPRISED THAT MY PASS & I WERE NOT INJURED SEVERLY. THE STRENGTH & DURABILITY OF THE BRONCO PROVED ITSELF TO ME THAT DAY.

Weakness:

THE ONLY WEAKNESS THE BRONCO HAS IS GAS MILEAGE.BUT IF YOU WANT A REAL TRUCK THIS IS THE ONE.

I BOUGHT MY BRONCO BRAND NEW W/ LESS THAN 50 MILES ON IT, AT THIS TIME I HAVE ALMOST 93,000 MILES & SHE STILL RUNS LIKE THE 1ST DAY I GOT HER.
MODS: FLOWMASTER DUAL EXHAUST, K&N AIR FILTER, 3" BODY LIFT, 33X12X15 MUD KINGS, 15X10 AMERICAN RACING WHEELS, REPLACED ENTIRE FACTORY STEREO SYSTEM,
MANIK GRILL GUARD & 2 6" KC LIGHTS. THE BRONCO IS A VERY VERSATILE VEHICLE I HAVE GONE DRIVING DOWN THE BEACH IN ALL TYPES OF SAND, 4 WHEELING IN THE HILL COUNTRY, CRUISING DOWN RIVERS, PLAYING IN THE MUD TO THE POINT YOU CANNOT EVEN TELL WHAT COLOR IT IS!!!!(WHITE/SILVER) AND I HAVE RARELY HAD TO USE MY 4 WHEEL DRIVE! & WHEN I DID IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. JUST ABOUT NOTHING STOPS THIS TRUCK. I HAVE A PIC OF IT ABOVE MY COUNTER WHERE I WORK & I GET SEVERAL COMPLIMENTS A WEEK ABOUT MY TRUCK. AND I HAVE HAD SEVERAL OFFERS FROM PEOPLE TO BUY MY BRONCO, BUT I WILL NOT SELL IT. IT IS MINE TILL THE DAY I DIE - AS A MATTER OF FACT I WANT TO BE BURIED IN MY BRONCO. THERE HAVE NO MAJOR BREAKDOWNS, JUST NORMAL MAINTAINENCE. PEOPLE REALLY DO LOOK AT A BRONCO WHEN IT DRIVES BY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS ALL CLEANED UP. THIS IS MY 4TH BRONCO IN ABOUT 12 YRS & A BRONCO IS THE ONLY VEHICLE I WILL DRIVE. I WANT ANOTHER ONE!!!!!!

Strength:

TTB front end. Good road manners and durability above and beyond todays weaker IFS systems.

Weakness:

Rusty, leaky, transmission failed often, heads cracked.

capable 4x4. It became a little unsafe after I lifted it 9" and put 35" tires on it but when it was new it was good. The thing rusted like crazy though and the original transmission was total junk. The heads were another thing. They would crack like an egg regularly requiring a major repair. I eventually pitched the V6 and swapped in a 302, which was much more reliable and better suited to power the vehicle.

Strong motor, great 4x4 system and power everything,off-road and trailer tow package.

Weakness:

Trim inside work's lose and casset is sometime's slow to eject.

I got the Bronco with 2.3 mile's on it and it has been a joy to have.Has a K&N filtercharger,Flowmaster exaust, off road lite's by Hella,a 5-speed manual trany and a 3.55 limited slip rear end.I have yet to get stuck and with the heavy duty off-road and tow package have no trouble pulling my trailer.I would tell anyone that this is a great 4x4 s.u.v. This 4x4 is not for men or women wanting a small s.u.v that get's great gas mileage.

Great for Off-roading, 4 wheel drive couldn't be any better for snow and pulling. Takes a beating!!!

Weakness:

Gas mileage sucks, but it's better with the 302 than the 351, so i guess i shouldn't complain.

I love this truck i've only had it for a short while and there is still SO much i want to do to it, I'm putting on a flowmaster cat-back exhaust soon, and i'm gunna take the top off... I'd like to get a custom push bar too. There's so much to do and so little money... :( But i'll get there. I've never loved a car more. Some are faster but nothing quite as tough. I wish i had gotten a stick shift, and manual lock hubs... but my baby's doing me proud. Oh yeah, and To all of you who say "It's a mans truck" i beg to differ.

Starts everyday without a problem. Great off-road toy. It will go just about anywhere. Great through mud as well. Mine has 76,000 miles and it runs like it is bran new. Nothing more than a tune-up and a little bit of adjustments here and there and it was ready to go. I got rear ended a couple of weeks ago and the tire on the back acted as a cushion. There was no damage at all.

Weakness:

The gas mileage could be a little better. That is the worst thing about mine.

I am a snowboarder and I go up to the mountain every weekend. The snow on the roads can get pretty bad. This Bronco will go through about 6 inches of snow in two wheel drive. That is awesome. The tires on mine are a little bit bigger than stock with aluminum wheels. It does fine on all the terain. One time a friend of mine called me up and was at our local O.R.V. park. He has a fullsize bronco with about 27" tires on it. He told me he was stuck and asked me to pull him out. I went and got a chain went out there and hooked it up. I locked it into four wheel drive and pulled him out in like 3 seconds, it was a piece of cake. All in all I love my bronco and I will always have it.

Drivetrain. Mine has a Detroit Locker, so that too. Removable top. Lot's of torque. Short wheelbase. Great looks. Lot's of chrome/stainless. Sliding side rear passenger windows for these years.

Weakness:

FUEL MILEAGE!!!!!!!!!!! You thought you had it bad? Try 8 mpg! 10 mpg with that atomizer gizmo if I drive nicely.

Only two years of this version of the full sized Bronco. Factory equipped with 400 V8, C6 trans, NP205 all-gear (not chain) transfer case, Ford 9" rear end, straight Dana 44 front axle, and manual front hubs. A truly bomb-proof drivetrain. Factory quad front shocks, even. This thing was meant for off-road action. Why Ford went with the 8.8 rear and auto hubs is beyond me. Probably saved some $ on rear end mfg. and added a weak link in the form of auto-hubs for the lazy folks. Who knows what they're using for a x-fer case on the newer ones. I've even seen servo operated pushbutton ones on some imports and newer suv's. Talk about adding a weak link to your 4x4! But then most people with 4wd never use it anyway. Good thing the rearend and hubs are easy swaps for the people who actually go off road. I love this truck! You can jump these things. They're that tough. Really! I'm talkin' all four tires off the ground and still be able to drive it home with no damage (no revving as you land, obviously). A Dana 60 or 70 would be cool but my 400 is stock so the 9" should last forever with regular maint. The ride is as any 4x4 should be. Firm but not rough. Heck, it's a 4wd truck! Wadya expect it to ride like a car? The 78-79 Ford Bronco was recently listed as one of Four Wheel and Off Road Magazine's "10 Best 4x4's Ever".

Weakness:

5 speed manual tranny with overdrive and granny gear.

This bronco rocks!!!!!!!! its rules the dunes. hard to get stuck and will go almost anywhere in 2 wheel drive with out lowering tire pressure. have 4 in rancho lift, 35 12.50 super swamper ssr. put 9 in from 1978 bronco with 4:56 gears front and back. aubern limited slip in 9 in. msd ignition, headers k&n setup. rebuilt tranny and heavy duty clutch. 5.0 litre 302 has 145,000 miles and still running strong with only minor leak. can get crate motor for less than 1,500.00 delivered. im looking into an engine solution right now. i want to build it, but i have to pass a smog test. wheel base lets you go anywhere in the snow, sand, mud or anywhere off road! bronco jumps awesome. have jumped 30 + feet. need bigger lift for tires.

Model Reviewed: XLT 5.8L

Strength:

Lack of repairs, period (though my rear window key wiring keeps "breaking", but not an expensive fix); sturdy off-road, smooth on-road; space, space, and more space; sliding rear window (very key if you have a dog and convenient to load stuff); handles very nicely for how big it is; engine performance

Weakness:

broken record - gas mileage and 32 gallon tank!(hey, it's a V8); slight "clunking" noise when shifting from forward to reverse or park to reverse or drive; rattles in interior door panels from road/trail conditions and aftermarket stereo w/ NO sub; the wheel cover seems to be a "hot" item to steal (had 2 stolen in 3 months)

It saddens me to write this review as I'll be selling my Bronco in the next month. After spending some time looking into another vehicle (which will most likely be a 2000/2001 Grand Prix GTP), I've realized that I've had no major problems with my truck. You change the oil and check your engine fluids regularly, and you've got a very reliable vehicle. Anyone who has owned one will tell you of the Bronco's dependability. You can take this truck wherever you want: highway, off-road, and even in a little water (though I've never driven through anything more than a couple of feet deep). One would honestly have to try hard to break a Bronco. With the exception of gas mileage (which is ultimately why I'm selling mine), there's no reason for a first time off-road truck/SUV buyer or a veteran of the dirt and mud not to consider the Bronco (if not rule almost anything else out). Bottom line: If you can afford the gas, the weaknesses are all minor. Buckle up, and take your best shot. The Bronco will go the full 12 rounds before you do (damn short weekends!).

Plenty of Power 351 HO. Roomy I can haul everything and anything.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage (what do you expect)? It's made of steel not plastic.
Some rust in tailgate (what do you expect)? It's made of steel not plastic
If you have trouble getting in the back seat , try loading from the rear.

I have always wanted a Bronco. Very reliable, easy to fix. Replaced almost everything if it needed it or not. Just love working on it. Pulled a large stump out of a neigbors front yard no problem. I want to take the top off but I am afraid it may leak later. Very rare paint job Tan top then blue middle then tan again. All factory, down to the duel chrome exhaust tips on the passenger side behind the wheel. I haved owned this monster for 4 years usual maintenance is only required. Rebuilt transfer case, new carb, new tires, replaced all window motors, normal stuff. Wife doesn't like driving it for the looks she gets as she goes down the road. Guys love a pickup woman and good looking truck. I am going to give it to my boy at 16.
