Looks nice, has get up and go.

Everything besides what I listed as a strengths.... ready the summary review. I refer to this car/suv as POS=Piece of Shi*, it's AWFUL!!!! I purchased in August of 2001 and have had numerous problems. In the first year of ownership I have had new front bearings, new power steering, 4 new tires, air conditioning smelling problems with the air conditioning twice and the noise inside the car while driving is LOUD!! It now has 30K miles on it and I just had to have new rotors installed on the front breaks!! Give me a break. I went to the Ford Dealer and they told me if I have only had to have the breaks and rotors replaced once in 30K miles then I should feel lucky!! I DON'T THINK SO!! Not to mention from the sound of it, every time I need new breaks, I will need new rotors. The gas mileage is awful, oh yeah and my battery light stays on now. The dealer told me to bring it back on Monday and most likely I need a new battery? GREAT! I plan on selling before 36K and running as far from any Ford product as fast as I can. It's a SHAME that Ford doesn't stand behind their products the way they should. If you are considering a FORD ESCAPE...DON'T DO IT!! So with that said... Good Luck! cheap, unsafe vehicle Don't buy this car. It was just named the least crashworthy small SUV by Money Magazine. Not to mention that it is built quite cheaply. Jeep Liberty is far and away a much better value. |

Strength:
Nice riding vehicle for the price. Powerful engine, and reasonably comfortable.
Weakness:
Limited operating time before several little items start malfunctioning. Gas mileage is not good either. I have had my Escape for over two years. Everything was great until this year. In the last month, I have had numerous problems with the emmissions system. First I had to have the ERG valve changed out then another sensor/switch on the same system. Now I am having a low idle/stalling problem. Based on the number of similar complaints, I feel there should be a recall for the fuel sensors. Also, seveal little electrical problems are creeping in like the radio goes out from time to time and the dash board lights only partially work. |

Strength:
Simple, great visibility out all windows, enough power.
Weakness:
Spark plugs deeply recessed into valve cover. Factory doesn't coat threads w/antiseize compound, so hard to remove them. Also, wire boots get stuck to porcelain insulator. While car is young, coat boots w/dielectric grease, and put antiseize on plug threads!! If not, a major headache "down the road". Nice car, see alert below Similar Products Used: Ford Escape, Honda CRV |

Fun to drive, plenty of room
Weakness:
everything listed in my review I've had my Escape for 2 years and have enjoyed it very much, up til now!! I just started having this problem about 3 weeks ago. I took it to the dlrship and they said it was probably the fuel sensor (?), so they took it off and cleaned it out and said it would work for a little while but I'd probably have to bring it back to have it replaced. Well, it's doing it again, so I'm taking it today. It does take a minute or two to start and once I get it started, I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it from stalling. This is not a safe way to drive, with feet on gas and brakes at the same time. It's wearing out my brakes too! A friend of mine also has an Escape and has had the same problem with hers, then another friends Mustang has done this also. I'm trying to find out if this has happened to any other Fords. If so, this should be THEIR problem, not OURS!! I've also had problems with "popping" in the front end when turning. I've had the rack & pinion (?) fixed once and it's starting again! And finally, my driver side window gets stuck and so does my moonroof!!! Has anyone had similar problems? Similar Products Used: I've only had cars before. |

Weakness:
Brake dust on the front wheels....I have heard if you replace the brake pads with some high end pads, it will fix this problem. I have had no problems out of my Escape. Bought new a little over a year ago and I love it. The leather bucket seats are very comfortable. The leather wrapped steering wheel feels great. I also enjoy the white inst. panels. I drive 50 miles to work one way, 1/2 of which is on the interstate other half on rural roads...comfortable ride and wind noise is not bad. Only once the wind noise was bad, and I realized that my sunroof was not completely closed. The rear folding seats are really handy..they are a 60/40 split. Plenty of room...I am 6'3" tall. It has stadium seating, meaning that the back seats are slightly raised. Gear shifting was a little eratic at first, but the manual says that it learns your driving habits for the first thousand miles. If you change your battery, it will have to re-learn. The stock 6 disc cd changer is great as well as the stock speakers. The independant suspension makes for a smooth ride especially through curves...I have never felt like the machine was out of control...it sticks to the road. It is a dream in rain and snow. Automatic 4WD is a plus. It has a peppy V6 under the hood. I feel very safe in the vehicle...it has front and side air-bags. Very fun vehicle to own and drive....I really enjoy it. Similar Products Used: Jeep Liberty --- in my opinion it did not compare with the Escape. |

Strength:
Strong Engine (V-6) Cheap to buy Lots of room for it's size Neat 4x4 system, but lacks 4wd low range
Weakness:
Loud - wind noise Transmission problems - hesitates and shifts hard Cheap interior, uncomfertable seats No low range for the 4wd system, which limits you 4wd options Controls are placed in hard to reach spots If you want a cheap 2nd car the Escape fits the bill. It is a good SUV for driving around town and for short trips. It has a lot of space to put stuff. But overall the Escape has a very cheap interior that does not hold up, the seats are very uncomfortable for long trips (anything over 100miles). On the freeway the wind noise is so loud at times that it is hard to talk in normal voice. The shifting is very rough somtimes the entire truck will vibrate and hesitate before it shifts, we have brought the truck in to the dealsrship several times and they keep tellig us that it is normal! Anyway, it does have very good power and a bullet proof engine. I have used the 4wd system a few times and it has gotten me out of some tight spots (4wd low range would be nice to have). If I had to do it all over again I would have bought a Nissan Xterra for a little more money. Similar Products Used: Nissan Xterra, RAV-4, Chevy Tracker |

Strength:
Sporty, excellent power and handling, great in the woods, very comfy to drive.
Weakness:
none except for the glitch we're dealing with now, which is ok, it's under warranty. I bought an XLT used. Got a nice deal, so I took it. Has all the goodies. I really enjoy driving it, so much so, I'm thinking of keeping it and letting my wife keep her van instead of selling it. After 2nd day of having it, tried the 4WD out. Works great on the hills with some mud. Would certainly recommed this SUV to others, just have problems calling it an SUV. Seems to small to live up to that name.Only problem I have, now the 4wd unit is stuck in 4WD, light isn't lit, but when you turn the wheel sharply to either side, you feel it stuck in 4WD. WATCH THIS!. If you back up with the wheel cut and you feel the back wheels grabbing real hard, you're in 4WD, the light just doesn't come on. Similar Products Used: A Mini Van, what a comparison. |

XLT V6 4X4
Strength:
** Wonderful V6 Duratec motor - with lots of potential ** A real "sleeper" when modified ** Great handling ** Braking distance is as good or better than most cars ** Aggressive styling - not whimpy like other compact SUV's ** A blast to drive ** Auto 4x4 a real plus ** Plenty of storage space ** Lots of "Band for the Buck" in stock trim
Weakness:
Needs a bigger gas tank My Escape now has approx 16,000 miles on it and still runs great. Had it in the shop once to replace a faulty sensor - covered under the warranty. I have extensively modified my Escape with a Kenne-Bell Supercharger, aftermarket exhaust, lowered it two inches, etc, etc. After replacing the el cheapo brake pads with EBC's the brake dust problem is gone. This is the Escape that Ford should have built. Hopefully, the SVT Escape scheduled to debut in 2005 will come with an OEM blower like the Lightning and Cobra. So Ford, if you build it, they will come. I have not had any excessive wind noise problems possibly due to my Zeibart undercoating treatment. I was able to achieve 25 mpg on the highway with conservative driving prior to my modifications. I still average 20 mpg mixed city/highway driving which is better than most sports cars.
