Strength:

Very Roomy, Great turning radius, Dual A/C & Heater, Bombproof, Sound System, Does not bottom out easily.

Weakness:

All Wheel Drive works to good, Bad front end bounce(remedy is some nice Bilstein Shocks)4wd does not have the I-Beam front end.

Great Vehicle, Who cares about the gas mileage when you are driving an outstanding vehicle like this. Have had no major repairs and only an intermittent squeak. Dealer can not find it. Who cares though when you got an outstanding sound system. For increased gas mileage change out the stock exhaust(Boral) and put a K&N airfilter in. It will increase the performance of the vehicle cost about 300.00$

Strength:

One of the most stylish SUVs out there on the market. Incredible amount of power compared to other SUVs driven. Owned an explorer and simply does not compare. Love the new adjustable petal feature. Very plush interior. Simply the best combination of size and style out there (aside from the Navigator)

Weakness:

Rear cargo area a slittle slim if third seat used.

33,000 For a fully loaded 2000 XLT 2wd 5.4l, with leather, and all the options. Convinced dealer to throw in billet grill.

Strength:

After 2 years and upwards of 20K miles, Vehicle has never seen the dealership again. Excellent reliability. 4.6 V8 has adequate power and reasonable mileage. (Gets 2mpg less than my Q45 on regular gas!!) Roomy and logical ergonomic layout, Powerful Dual A/C (a must in S. FLorida). Strong value.

Weakness:

Factory tires leave a bit to be desired in terms of Road Noise and Wear. Rotating helps, but noise returns quickly. Can't wait to upgrade to new tires. Interior is aaesthetically very nice, but quality of plastic leaves to be desired. Third row seat is a real pain to get in and out of truck. I hear next gen. will have a fold down third seat!!

I was very fortunate to lease my '98 Expedition with XLT package (including convenience group with Dual A/C), and running boards for $1,000 out of pocket and $369.00 per month. This deal was also achieveable with the 1999 model, I don't know if 2000 pricing changed significantly. The secret to the price is the relatively high residual these trucks enjoy.

As soon as my Lease expires, I will probably BUY (not lease)another Expedition or possibly Navigator. Zero service department visits, safety for the little ones, and a vehicle that the whole family loves at a reasonable price is as much as anyone can expect from their chosen mode of transport.

Two thumbs up!

Explorer-Does not hold a candle to the expedition. Durango-I'll never buy another car that requires me to become intimate friends with a service advisor. Chevy Tahoe/Suburban-Better engine, have driven the redesigned 2000 and it is faster, a bit quieter (see note above regarding tires), seems to have a softer ride. That said, I simply prefer the styling of the Expedition to the Chevy, although this latest generation will give Ford a run for the money.

Strength:

Spaciousness, ride characteristics, comfort. Can easily fit 8 people COMFORTABLY. Excellent reliability.

Weakness:

gas mileage. I'm getting approx 13 mpg on average.

Paid approx $36,000 for Eddie Bauer package. With the lease available, my monthly payments were actually less then a comparably equipted Explorer or Durango. Has more room than it appears to have from the outside. Handles very well for a vehicle of this size and unlike most other large SUV's it fits in my garage!

actually rides better than my 1998 Explorer.

Strength:

Safety for my children is #1 and this is the vehicle to satisfy that need. The 5.4L engine is powerful enough to get this 6,000 lb. beast moving . . . FAST! Every option that was available in 1997 is on this one - very comfortable.

Weakness:

It's a gas guzzler! In 1997 the XLT model didn't offer a sunroof. Leather seats seem a bit cheap for $32K.

Paid $32K in April 1999. Have never had one moment of buyers remorse. This vehicle fits the needs of our family perfectly. Plenty of room for the kids and all the stuff that they need. Have driven the X over 30K now and no problems.

Our next car purchase will definitely be another Expedition, this time with the sunroof.

Strength:

Great power from the 5.4 liter. Outstanding towing abilities. Lotsa room in the front two seats; room for kids in the third seat. Turns around in my narrow street. Fits in my tiny garage.

Weakness:

Auto Leveling suspension is BoUnCy and HARSH. Also, I have owned mine one year and have had troubles with: 1)rear wiper motor, 2)washer pump, 3)hazard lights, 4)roof rack; all repaired/replaced under warranty. This quality was a disappointment after owning several japanese vehicles.

First of all, I would not recommend a big SUV unless you tow a trailer or need a third seat or go off-road. That said, I tow a camp trailer and paid $33k for a new XLT and got about every option except leather.

In comparison, a Suburban just won't fit in my garage. Also, its seats are uncomfortable for me. The Durango is slightly smaller and pricey when optioned for towing. It does have more head room in the back, a smoother ride and better handling.

The Expedition is a good value when you consider its comfort, technologically advanced engine, and large towing capacity.

Strength:

1. Lots of room.
2. Easy to read dash.
3. CD changer in the middle console.
4. Sense of security (even if it may be false).
5. Loose/easy steering according to my wife (also see weaknesses).
6. Two visors to block the sun from the winshield and the side window simultaneously.

Weakness:

1. Transmission had to be replaced after 14k miles!!!
2. Rear wiper motor burned out.
3. Rear air vents do not work.
4. Interior has a cheap plastic feel.
5. Poor fit and finish (large bubbles in the paint job).
6. Steering is too loose for a large SUV.
7. Uncomfortable seats.

Overall, the Expedition rides well for a large vehicle. Of course, the 4WD came in handy during the winter months (primary reason for purchasing the SUV). My wife and I don't have kids so we have no real use for the 3rd row seating. That makes the cargo space very usable :) Living in the midwest, there aren't many hills to contend with so I never really had issues with lack of power. For a such large vehicle, it had enough punch when it was pushed.

But the mechanical and electrical problems plagued this SUV during the short period of time. Maybe it's because my last car was a Honda which had hardly any of those problems and I am being too critical. But, a transmission needing to be replaced at 14k is a bit too much (the Expedition was out of commission for 1 month). I never realized what a hassle it was to leave your vehicle at the dealership every couple of months for problems. I am just dreading the day my warranty expires and I have to pay for all the repairs out of my own pocket.

If you are thinking of obtaining this vehicle, I would recommend that you lease it. It may be that I was unfortunate to have one of the few Expeditions that is plagued with problems. But if you lease it and you are satisfied that it is a superb truck, then you always have the option to buy.

Model Reviewed: XLT

Strength:

* Power (passing & towing) ,
* Durability
* Short turning circle for such a large vehicle. Far superior to GM products
* Safe - owned one before - walked away from a rollover. Damage looked like someone put a knee to the doors - minimal
* Ford's customer service policy - will do whatever it takes to resolve problems. Readily admits to issues and resolves quickly.

Weakness:

* I-beam suspension hard on tires (wear very early if you don't rotate on schedule).
* Poor storage behind third seat - Just a little more length would solve luggage storage OR under seat as in Windstar. One (possibly only)GM Advantage in Suburban
* Ford has cheapened or removed some components (CD cartidge is flimsy, removed leather front arm rests - replaced with oversized (O.K.) center console
* Gas mileage, but then again didn't you choose a 4800 pound vehicle?

Ford has a huge leg up on GM in Quality, Fit Finish (there should be a class action suit for GM's headliner glue failures - Check any model from about 1980 on) and attention to the customer (GM believes customer is an annoyance - excepting Saturn - GM is arrogant towards customer needs). Understand that I've mostly owned foreign brands over 30 years due to quality, fit finish, ergonomicsn and style. Ford attends to all these attributes best of the Big 3 and a lot of foreign models. More importantly, Ford takes care of customer. Wouldn't own just any Ford, but have owned Aerostar, Windstar, and Expedition. At the people hauling level, Ford is the best.
