Strength:
Good power, comfortable for trips with a family of 4. 4wd works good for travelling in snow.
Weakness:
Brakes, Constant repairs, Handles terrible in snow unless in 4WD. Poor gas mileage. I''ve owned this vehicle for 2 years and have had many problems with. First, at 30,000 miles, it overheated and the cooling system was clogged. The dealer flushed the cooling system and replaced the orange coolant with regular coolant. That fixed that problem and cost 250.00. The 4WD switch went out next. Then, the front rotors had to be replaced at 35,000 miles. Then the brake booster went out at 65,000 miles and had to be replaced. 300.00 repair bill for that one.The alternator went out at 70,000 miles and had to be replaced. And finally the transmission cooler line popped loose while on the interstate and dumped the fluid and had to be towed. The clip had let loose where it meets the radiator. Now my service engine light came on at 83,000. What next? I love SUV''s but i think that I will shop around more next time. Similar Products Used: 1987 Blazer. |

Strength:
- 4x4 works great (when it works). - comfortable ride - fuel efficient (avg. 11-12L/100km -HWY) - pulls trailer well - mechanics love me (probably because all the cash I shove into their faces)
Weakness:
- replaced battery ($150) - gas pedal stuck (butterfly stuck) - replaced one wheel bearing ($750) - replaced 4x4 trans. controller ($500) - major oil leak from both oil lines ($600) - door hinges wearing out(both driver and passenger side) ($200 / door) I must admit it is one of the best ergonomical cars out there. Very comfortable, very roomy especially with back seats folded down. Climate control works great. Gas mileage is respectively efficient, compared with other SUVs. Layout of controls and panels are just right. And it maneuvre''s pretty good at high speeds. It''s not the greatest looking SUV but I wanted something that was built to last.... until 2 years and 100,000 km later..... Strength:
Good low end torque. Good transmission.
Weakness:
Poor EGR valve and exhaust manifold desigin, becomes a real problem with higher miles. Back window squeeked incessently from first day. My family purchased this car at 40k knowing it was a rental vehicle but it was in good condition and the price was right. Initially the transmission needed some serious adjustment but the warranty covered it. Now it has 130k and for the most part I can say things have held up nicely. I''ve replaced the alternator, fuel pump, and the front ball joints. The engine does run rough however due to poor EGR valve desigin in exhaust system. The valve has a tendency to stick but buying a new one isn''t always the answer because the carbon build-up in the exhaust manifold clogs up the new ones. The 4.3 vortec is a decent engine but 12 valves is a joke- makes for a short power band. Similar Products Used: 92 Ford Explorer limited- gutless but much more luxurious 93 Bravada- best ever suv |

Looks, power, affordability... Great cargo space and comfort; easy to use. GReat interior/exterior design.
Weakness:
EGR valve is annoying. Very impressed with looks, ride, power, and performance! Gas hog, though. Lucky to get 19-20 mpg. Purchased with 134,000 miles; now has 143,000 miles and running strong. EGR valve sticks occasionally, but no major problems. If you take care of a vehicle, it''ll run for half a million miles. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer |

Looks good and rides very nice.
Weakness:
I have only had the chance to use the 4x4 system once and now it is going to cost me 1200.00 dollars to use it again. We baught this Suv used but me and my wife fell in love with this SUV. Now with no help from Gmc I have to shell out 1200.00 dollars to fix my 4x4 system because the vacuum control swith was faulty and telling it to switch to 4-wheel drive when I was not telling it to switch to 4-wheel drive. I have already replaced the ignition switch myself. That was after trips to to shops and 4 days without the vehicle. I think it is pretty bad that I have to put this money into a 1998 vehicle. Powerful engine for towing, doesn''t roll in the corners like other SUV''s. Decent fuel mileage.
Weakness:
Read my review summary- too much to type again! I had this for just over a year and I ended up dumping money into this. Where do I start? Replaced ball joints, CV joints, fuel injectors ($$$), gas tank, water pump. The AC didn''t work after awhile. The truck was starting to rust in the same places as all the others- and it was even undercoated and rustproofed! The paint on these things was awful. This turned out to be the worst vehicle I ever had. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer |

Fuel economy could be better. I bought this Explorer with 34,000 miles as a replacement vehicle for a 1997 GMC Jimmy that I had a lot of trouble with. My Jimmy only had 32,000 miles but I was desperate to get rid of it. Overall, I love the Explorer. The controls are all user friendly and it is a good size- not too big and not too small. I like the compass and the CD player, as well as the rear air and radio controls. Ride and handling are much better than that of my Jimmy even though people say explorers are more likely to roll over. Mine has some General Ameri-Way XT tires and I have never thought the vehicle seemed like it could roll over. I also love the keyless entry keypad! OVERALL A GREAT VEHICLE! Weakness:
I bought my Jimmy in 1999. It was a year old. I started having problems with my odometer gauges. They would all bottom out and my car would not go into anything but over drive. After a few weeks of brainstorming, the guys working on it realized that it was an ignition switch causing all of these problems. Since then, I have replaced the ignition switch 3 to 4 times. My seat handles (plastic) have broken 3 times. They just fell off when I slammed the car door. I have had a new computer, A/C compressor, and many other parts. Right now my car has been in the shop for 4 months. Nobody can tell me what is wrong with my Jimmy. It smokes, spits, sputters and smells terrible. The guys at the GMC dealership have replaced my oxygen sensor, spider and many other parts that I can''t even remember. Does anyone know what is wrong with it now? Please contact me at SmithM_c21@hotmail.com if you have had the same problems. GMC Jimmy is the worst car to buy. GMC does not care if you have problems with their parts or not. They should have a recall on over a dozen parts. Similar Products Used: None |

Unreliable This is in response to Laura... My Jimmy has only 40,000 miles on it and I have started having trouble with the brakes. I don''t know a lot about cars, but the ABS light is coming on and now the brakes are making a knocking sound when I slow down to 5 mph. I need to bring it in for repair, but I am afraid i will die when I hear the cost. My dealer told me they base their business on the word of mouth of customers. Well, this one is spreading some nasty things. We bought this car in April 2001, a week later my husband is poking around under the hook and noticed they did not even change the air filter. What a ripoff? What is that $5.00 worth? Come to find out they had done no maintenance on this car before they sold it to us. How appauling!!! I think a recall on these brakes would be a good idea; I am all for it. We also have the broken handle on the seat problem and have had it replaced (under warranty) and it is now broken again, not even four months later. We also had to replace the pins where the door hooks on; they were rusted ( at 32,000 miles ) and we also replaced the weather stripping on the windows. Overall, I love my Jimmy; I just wish it didn''t have all these "little" problems. Similar Products Used: 1995 GMC Sierra- very reliable |
