Strength:

The car looks pretty and can fool you if you don't ever drive it.

Weakness:

Where do I begin...We are on fuel pump #4 in three years. EGR Valve number 3, new brakes...twice plus several smaller broken pieces in the interior. We ar looking for people to sign a letter to GM regarding their lack of responsibility for these vehicles. If we can't get a response the nice way how about a class action suit? No one should have to continue to pay for a car that isn't a lemon but a testimony to the garbage being produced by GM. Interested? Please e-mail me at jenlydon@yahoo.com. Thanks!

To sum it up it SUCKS!

Strength:

Good pickup for such a massive vehicle. Tows alot which i need for towing a 6000 pund boat. does it no problem. Great offroad.

Weakness:

Very basic interior. Horrible stock stereo. Oil lines running to the oil cooler starting to leak.

I love my Jimmy! Not bad fuel mileage for a 5.7 liter 350. Pretty good pickup and tons of pulling power. THIS THINGS AN ANIMAL OFFROAD! I've gone with all of my friends and none can compete with me. (they also have full size trucks). Very good overall truck. Like the big size to it.

Strength:

The Vortec engine is powerful. It has excellent pick-up when trying to pass or get onto the highway. It's 8 years old and has 122,000 miles on it but the interior looks brand new and everything still works great(power windows, door locks, and mirrors). It's roomy and the seats are extremely comfortable. It rides great and handles very well in all weather and road conditions. I love the push button 4-wheel drive. The ride feels very stable for an SUV. I get EXCELLENT gas milage with mine. It averages 23 mpg with a combination of city and highway miles.

Weakness:

The brakes have been a constant problem. I had the brake pads replaced and 5,000 miles later they were worn down to the sqealers. The ABS works whenever it wants to... at times I've stood on the brakes and continued to roll forward at 20 to 30 mph for 100' or so. I found out there is a recall for the ABS system and the dealer performed the recall work about 2 weeks ago. Since then the brakes have worked quite well. I hope the problem has been fixed because I REALLY like this SUV.

I really like my 1993 Jimmy. It has been a trooper... I drive a car hard and expect a lot out of it. I've put 28,000 miles on it since I bought it a year ago and it has never failed me. Once I accidently left the interior lights on(2 map lights and the cargo area light)and 9 hours later after work it actually started... it struggled a little and then fired right up. It cruises great on the highway, it doesn't feel hills at all and the power to pass or manuever in traffic is right there when you need it. I would highly reccommend the 1993 Jimmy if you are looking for a good used SUV. I paid $8500 for mine in March of 2000... Just make sure you get the recall work done on the ABS system.

I am approaching 75,000 miles on this truck and have decided I will find some way to unload this vehicle and be free ! The $$$$ for the repairs of this vehicle has put me at the brink of bankrupcy ! The votex engine labeled as the strongest unbreakable( salesman pitch ) is no problem it is everything else. And extended warranty ?? What a joke it covers everything but what needs repair.GMC you have lost a customer here. I will unload this thing as soon as possible and you couldn't pay me to buy another GM Vehicle

Strength:

Price, sticker was over 30K but wirh discounts ($22800)it was the best bang for the buck. Gas MPG on the highway is 22. Not bad for a SUV. SLE trim level is nice as is the fit and finish.

Weakness:

I am very picky. I only have 5K miles after 10 months, but I have had a few minor problems. Each time I take it to the dealer for repairs, it seems it comes back with damage in the area of repair, or the repair has caused another problem. I have found this to be true with other GM vehicles I own. I live in a large metro area and some of this is due to the large volume of business these dealers do. You get rushed out the door so they can get to the next car. No pride in the work anymore! I currently have a small oil leak coming from the back of the motor. The dealer agrees there is a leak, but he has been unable to find it. I am betting it's the intake manifold gasket. I have a Corvette, Chevy Silverado, and Grand Am that have all had this same intake problem. Most repair garages agree that this problem is caused by the heating up and cooling down of the aluminum intake and aluminum heads. They say alot of American cars with this design have the same problem, but most people don't pay as much attention to small oil spots on the motor as I do. They say with a forgen vehicle instead of replacing the intake gasket, you will be replacing the head gaskets at considerable more money.

Overall the Jimmy is just OK

Explorer seems to be a cheeper feeling vehicle than the Jimmy. My best friend own a Toyota SUV and he seems to have it in for repair as much as I do and his is under powered according to him

Strength:

Plenty of power. A/C blows cold. Stereo is decent.

Weakness:

Too many repairs bills. Just replaced injectors for second time in two years. Each time I spent around $900. Water pump was bad.
Brakes are awful. At 36,000 miles the right front pad was gone and left front pad was still in good shape. They are imbalanced and don't stop well. Differential leaked and was repaired. Side mirrors break too easily. I see a lot of GMC's, including mine, with this problem. A plastic part in the dash (where the 4 wheel drive button would go if I had it) broke. My friend had the same problem.
I wouldn't buy another Jimmy if it was the last car on Earth. It is the biggest piece of crap imaginable with so many repair bills. I bought it because I thought the 4.3L engine was good. It is powerful, but I have spent $1,800 on it in two years and the car is five years old. The transmission is starting to slip. I replaced all of the steering components because they were worn and sloppy. I took it to three different places to get it aligned and they couldn't do it right. It was out of alignment when I bought it and it is still out of alignment. I have run out of gas three times because when the gauge gets in the red and the brakes are applied, the car stalls. If I park on an incline with a quarter or eighth tank of gas showing, the car might not start. It has happened several times.
I drive a piece of crap car and I hope to sell it soon. Even before the credit card statement with the last repair bill on arrives in my mailbox.

20K used. I would not recommend it at all. Buying a Jimmy is dangerous unless you don't mind spending a lot in repair bills.

Model Reviewed: Jimmy SLT 4 door /w sunroof

Strength:

Nice gizmoes; power seats, compass, stereo with cd, and pre-set equalizer. Nice sound too. Nice interior layout, no stupid wood grain simulations. Thanks for the lumbar support, my back feels better.
Nice tint, good outside looks. Tows heavy trailers easily. Lots of torque, and HP.

Weakness:

Developed rattles in its 3rd year - I'm still looking for them. Sunroof drains leaked to the floor pan. Dealer replaced the carpet - ONLY WHEN I REMINDED THEM THAT IT WAS A LEASE, and underlay (I think they just dried it and charged GM) and electral wiring - which had corroded - there is where the shorts occured NOT in the computer as the GM techs thought.

When the hell does the computer EVER have control over the power windows, sunroof locks and 4WD buttons? Dummys.

Driver side mirror 'rattled' around when driving. The brakes "moo'd" when the ABS kicked in. Dealer said that all Jimmys did this. I found that other Jimmys that I have rented during repairs never did either of the problems. When I left the truck at the dealers to repair these problems, for DAYS, and rented another Jimmy, when I got the truck back, everything was the same as if there were never any repairs. DO THEY DO ANY WORK? At least I don't pay for these things under a Lease. Good thing I didn't buy this.

The Leather seats cracked after 2 years, and I oil them with Mothers regularly. My '74 Firebird formula with vinyl/leather never cracked to this day. Gee - guess they don't make leather like they used to.

If you get one, expect NOT to get as good a gas milage as the brouchure says this truck can get.

Replace the stock tires. I did. Its much better.

I've encountered many minor problems in the first month of driving this truck, nothing serious, but I would expect that a top of the line SLT would not have ANY problems. Also the dealerships should be at your beck and call if you have a top of the line (or any line, but anyway) if you drive off the lot and find something wrong. Once I signed the cheque, they wouldn't even change a light bulb right away. By the way - GM techs took 4 hours to try to figure out how to change the head lights' bulbs. I left without it being changed, and went home, took off the front grille and assembly (20 mins) and change the bulb. I could not find an easier way. The bulbs are NOT easily accessable.

- I installed the 'installed' trailer wiring. GM techs messed up.
- I fixed the 'mooing' brake pedal (seals on hydrolic). GM techs said that this was normal.
- I fixed the light bulbs for the headlights. How many GM techs does it take to change a light bulb anyway?
- Jimmy's headlights are VERY dim, or don't light up the road very well. If your have poor night vision, get the Blazer. It does this better.
- I bought the reciever for the hitch that I had to pay to be installed. GM should do a complete job, It's not the money, I would of paid for the reciever, but to pay for an item, and then to still be missing a major part......
- I changed the air filter; GM techs have not even looked at it to this day, and I take it for regular, scheduled maint. I think that they are supposed to do this.
- I changed and machined the brakes. GM Techs want $350+ every time. Costs me, pads ($40-$50 for the best metallic name brand) and $35 for machining rotors or drums at a local mechanic. Mechanic installs brake pads and cleans off brake dust and lubes. Costs me $75 and a coffee. Total: $150.50 (.50 for the coffee)
Whats with the hump in the floor in the passinger side? Just make the truck higher if you want to fit exhaust pipes, don't chew up the interior space.
Interior space may be large, but with all the funny bumps in the floor pan around the exhaust and rear tires, this thing does not have 'usuable' space unless you drop the rear seats for a bigger flat area.
Back seats suck. Don't sit their unless your a dog.
I got stuck in the snow in an unplowed parking lot. ONLY 8 inches deep. I thought this thing had 8.5 inches of ground clearance. Oh well, by the end of the day, the snow melted and I could drive out. The truck is too low to the ground for 4x4'ing. I've tackled similar in a 80's RX7. Believe it or not.... I think the RX7

If you buy, don't bother with the extended warranty.... GM Dealerships don't fix anything anyway. Make friends with your local mechanic, he'll be your best friend anyway, because you put his kid through University.

Lease this thing. You'll get more respect when you need it.

If you want to impress people, the interior is the best one I've seen. Especially if you get ALL of the gadgets.

Don't even waste your time with GM mechanics. I fixed all of the above mentioned problems (except for the mysterious rattles) my self. I'm NOT a mechanic, I'm a programmer.

Although the trucks been faithful..... its the GM service that sucks. I can't give it a high value rating, this things' depreciated too fast. Good thing I leased. ($350 a month, 36 months, $5000 down with $1900 of that being used up in security, taxes, first month, freight, gas tax, hitch.) To lease another one startin in 2000..... $660 a month, $5000 down, with only $800 going to taxes. Security and lease is passed on from lease to lease. No Freight. No first month. WOW..... 35% increase. Guess I should ask my boss for a %35 increase. GM - Your getting greedy.

Strength:

Roomy, engine has a lot of power, good leather, smooth transmission, great in snow and rain, sound system is excellent

Weakness:

ABS system is unsafe, it has a mind of its own. Also, the rear side windows should be able to vent

After about one year, I have been very pleased with my Jimmy. I paid $19000 for a 97, and I like it better than a $40000 lexus SUV. The acceleration in the Jimmy blows away most comparable SUV's. I'm not a fan of ABS in any car, and the ABS system in this Jimmy is especially frusterating, but that is my only major complaint. The stereo is better than any factory system I have ever heard (with the exception of the 2001 mercedes C-class). The interior is very roomy, which is often appreciated by my 110 lb dog. I heard a lot of horror stories about these trucks, but my fully loaded, 5 door, 4WD, Jimmy SLT has been nothing short of exceptional so far. Perhaps I have just found a gem in a pile of lemons, but nonetheless, I would recommend this car to anyone looking for an SUV. I may be headed for rough times ahead, but so far nothing has gone wrong. GM's V-6 Vortec engine makes any Japanese engine look like a pile of rubber bands with some shoe polish. It is a pleasure to drive, and it looks pretty sharp too.
