GMC Jimmy SLT
Strength:
It has a nice paint job, homelink infrared transmitter is a nice feature. Decent power, although towing capacity could be better. The tires are still OK (they must have been replaced before I bought it!)
Weakness:
Where do I begin?!? I purchased this Jimmy in July of 1999 with about 25,000 miles on it. It is the SLT model fully loaded with every bell and whistle available. I now have just over 50,000 miles, and am ready to trade it in and take the loss. I still haven't decided if buying the extended warranty was a good idea. I've had this piece of junk in the shop about 10 times for repair in the past year and a half. Here's a few of the problems I've experienced: I WOULD NOT EVEN RECOMMEND THE GMC JIMMY TO AN ENEMY! Unfortunately I'm just hurting my resale value by posting this, but I really don't care. I just hope that this will help prospective buyers make an informed decision. Hopefully GMC will get a clue and drop this piece of junk from their lineup. I will NEVER buy a GMC product again, or anything from GM for that matter. They just don't get it. After having 2 Toyotas, I understand that car companies ARE capable of putting out a quality product. We as consumers need to expect a great deal more from the American auto manufacturing industry. Similar Products Used: '95 Toyota Corolla and '95 Toyota Tercel. I think I'll stick to the well made foreign automobiles. Had the tercel for 4 years and NEVER had it in the shop for repairs. Have had the Corolla for 3 years so far and have only had to replace the battery and a belt, and brake pads. |

Strength:
Classic body style with chrome, and ample room for everyone. This year's model had the Throttle Body Injection (TBI) which increases the horsepower and torque over older carbed ones. Easy to work on and find parts for. I would like to know if those who owned these trucks, who claimed they didn't last, if they actually took care of them.
Weakness:
(a) Acceleration, but after installing a Holley TBI, this was less a weakness. (b) Borg-Warner T-5 trans, only because the synchro's wear quickly, luckily mine hasn't yet; when it does -- a build kit is only ~$125. (c) Sunroof, can't have everything I guess. I feel as though I came across a great truck, it was repainted and had a new GM engine in it. The 4-wheel drive works like a charm and with 235/75/15's (stock option tires) on it, you can take it anywhere. I have been averaging around 23 mpg, mostly highway driving, but it only seems like it should be less than that because it has such a small gas tank. The only major things I have done are replacing the clutch and converting the R-12 A/C to R-134A. If you don't have much money (college student) and you are patient, you can find a truck that has been taken care of, that will last, and is inexpensive to work on (and insure) -- you can work on it yourself fairly easily and save even more money. Similar Products Used: The GM 60* 2.8L V-6 engine (stock) still out accelerates the Ford 2.8L V-6 one, my brother has one with a rebuilt engine and trans in it. |

What's the problem? I am the pickiest consumer out there. I love this vehicle! It is the best looking SUV bar none. Mine has the All Wheel drive option (not 4 wheel drive) and is the best thing going. The Jimmy will cruise at 85 mph all day long in comfort. I feel safer in this car than anything I have ever owned. I came from a Jeep Cherokee (never again!)
Weakness:
I agree with all of you that bought this vehicle new. I bought a loaded 96 in 98 and paid slightly over $18K for it. Resale value is terrible! Also the turning radius is the worst I have ever encountered- ever! I love this vehicle. I own a VW, BMW, and a Geo in addition to this Jimmy. Sure, there are better SUV's out there, but if you buy used and save the depreciation- you can't beat it. Similar Products Used: Cherokee- never- 4Runner- too expensive, Explorer- felt cheep to me |

Nice looking car, like the interior and it seems to have a bit power.
Weakness:
Brake system and build quality. My girlfriend and I loved this car when we first bought it. After a couple of weeks we started to notice the inferior build quality. The rear windsheild wiper kept jamming, the driver's side window trim came loose, and the rear panel that houses the jack wouldn't stay attached. We bought the car at 48,000KM. At 55,000 our brakes started screaching heavily when we turned corners. We took it back to the dealership and they told us that the brake system needed a lot of work. They needed to replace front and rear rotors and brake pads. This work wasn't covered in our bumper-to-bumper warranty since it was classed as wear and tear. The dealer wanted to charge us $2000 CAN. We caused a lot of fuss in front of the dealers other customers asking why the rotors had gone after the low milage and pushed the onus on the dealer to make the repairs. Basically, it was my opinion that the dealer sold me faulty goods. After a lot of heated discussion I managed to get the price down to $800 CAN. I still wasn't happy because rotors should last for much longer than 55,000KM. I asked they dealer if there is a known problem with the Jimmy's brake system, he just shrugged and said no. After reading this page I believe there is a major problem with the Jimmy's brakes. I would heavily discourage anyone from buying a GMC Jimmy. I would never buy a GMC again. Cheap to insure, $800 a year, Easy to fix and repair and not too costly for parts.. LOTS OF SPACE!! (Good for anyone who likes getting girls into to back seat! it folds down and leaves you tons of room to pack your bags if your moving, or that little something, with that special someone!)
Weakness:
Gas milage SUCKS! I've had some choke problems which may have something to do with it, but even if it was in exelent condition, 15 - 20 in the city, about 25 on the highway... If you can afford the + 80cents a liter (in canada) buy it! This being my first car, I loved it, knowing it had 4X4 is awesome! The spare tire rack hindges were rusted and was starting to bend, but it's still got about 3 or 4 years before I have to replace it! The rear hatch is a pain to close, I don't know if its just mine, or for all 85 makes, but you need to hook the window and the hatch up together, then push it into place! Its a real pain, and apperently the ex-owner lost the window doing it the wrong way before! Similar Products Used: None |

Spacious, lots of room for everyone, great to take camping, gets you anywhere off-road you want to go. You can feel safe in a Jimmy in a collision.
Weakness:
Like others, my rear-defog worked off and on, my automatic door lock (on one side)no longer worked. The driver and front passenger seat tend to be a bit uncomfortable during long road trips. Did have some troubles with the a electric sensor which caused it to hesitate, but don't all cars & trucks with electronic components have troubles?? Very impressed with this vehicle. Love the interior. Leather is of exceptional quality. Dual power seats with memory wonderful. Bose sound system is great. No longer have to go with an aftermarket cd player. A/C is superb. Power of the 4.3 is great. No problems towing or passing. Brakes have a firm pedal. Stop better than my 97 Explorer sport. Interior is very luxurious.
Weakness:
Have to beat my wife to the keys so I can drive it. Sorry to hear older models are having so many problems. We have two boys and couldn't have picked a better vehicle! We are very happy with our Jimmy(as if you couldn't tell). The power is great. Interior is as nice as my leather living room set. Wonderful Bose stereo. It is a 2000 model bought off the dealer showroom floor in 2001. Great discount from original 32080.00 price. I have a 1972 GMC truck, and this Jimmy. I am going next week to pick up my 2001 GMC Sierra-vortec 5300, extended cab, same great leather interior and sound system! Can't wait till Thursday!!! GMC rules.
