Strength:

Can't think of any

Weakness:

Mileage lower than specifications
Serious reliability problems
Very bad build quality

I bought this truck over a year ago and had to sell it after 11 months of ownership. This is the lousiest vehicle ever imaginable!! A week after I bought the piece of crap metal, the power steering started freezing up when making left turns!!! It took 5 painstaking trips to the dealership to fix that problem. Then at the 3 month mark the power window motor blew out because water had leaked in through the insulation into the circuitry!! Geez! It does not end there...after this I had recurring electrical problems that cause the thing to suddenly die for a period of 5-10 seconds and then come back to life!!!

The bottom line - this is a piece of SH*T. I had to trade it in and take a heavy loss. I now own a BMW X5, and although its not a same class comparison the quality is about a million..er..make that a billion percent better!!

Strength:

Powerful engine.
Great interior storage space.
Great handling for such a heavy vehicle.

Weakness:

Braking could be much better. If GM can give the Corvette incredible braking why not on all cars? Loud interior highway noise. Seats lack lumbar support.

The last owner seemed to neglect this sleeping beast. I bought the Jimmy smoking and without being able to pass brake inspection. I replaced the brake pads, rotors and drums to get the brakes right but with a lifetime warranty on those parts, it's no brainer. You have to be able to stop! I also had a complete tune-up with gasket replacements to stop the blue smoke. With $800 in repairs I saved $2,500 on the street price. Now it runs like new. The interior space is surprisingly large. It doesn't seem so large on the outside. I have put a full sized refrigerator in the back all while closing the gate completely.I have already put 16,000 miles on it in 10 months. I believe in running a car till it dies and this engine seems like it can live forever with proper maintenance.

Strength:

LIGHTNING fast (0-60 in under 5 seconds), AWD keeps great tractions, 4.3L Turbo V6 requires little maintenence, Looks great, good cargo room, Leather seating, decent gas mileage

Weakness:

Paint has to be babied as it tends to fade, especially on the cladding. If involved in a wreck, most cladding is discontinued by GM and thus a quest to find at a decent price, all electronic trannies from 92/93 tended to shift harder and harder, requiring a new trans after several years. No option for manual trans.

Best vehicle I have ever owned, quicker than most sports cars and dependable too. Great traction in snow and DEFINITELY gets looks. GMC only produced 2500 in 1992 and 2200 in 1993, making them a real unique truck to own. But with unique comes the problem of finding parts, especially the cladding and rims. If anything happened to the special Syclone 4.3 Turbo Intake, I'm sure that would be a pain too. Overall an EXCELLENT vehicle. Blue book value is only at about 14000 for a mint one, and its hard to find them under $15000, so a good deal is few and far between.

Only really comprable with super-quick SUVs/Trucks, maybe the 91 GMC Syclone or the Ford Lightning

HANDLING, HANDLING, HANDLING

So far I'm quite unhappy with this truck...I've owned GM trucks before (this is my 2nd brand new GM truck) but this one seems to have a major handling problem, the truck is all over the road and leans to the passenger side...I had the truck in with the dealer 4 times so far and they tell me nothings is wrong....I noticed on the work order from the second visit that they did a 4 wheel alignment on the truck, took it for a test drive and noted it still didn't handle correctly, so then they rotated the tires and said everything is fine...when I picked the truck up, it still leaned to the passanger side and was still hard to drive...I'm am prepeared to send a registered letter to the dealer holding him and GM responsible for any accidents or injuries because of the POOR handling. Also have a small coolant leak that smells like burning rubber, I've been waiting 3 weeks now for the coolant line to come in at the dealer....WHAT NEXT???????? I bought this truck BRAND new...it had 7km on it and it has 3100km now.

Strength:

Power- The 4.3 Vortec had more power than all other 6 cylindar V6 SUV's,
equivalent to the small V-8's that year. I have been thoroughly impressed
in mountain driving with this power. I got the sport handling package
which is between the stiff off road and luxury suspensions. This gives
be better cornering ability than most SUV's and better off road handling
than that found on luxury suspension SUV's. I've taken this 2 door SLS
Jimmy off road in the southwest deserts on 2 trips to Arizona from Ohio
and was impressed by it's skills both on long interstate drives, over
steep mountain passes and off road in the desert- not real tough rocky
rides, but enough to feel in control at all times. Both of these trips
exceeded 5000 miles in under 2 weeks with an oil change in the middle.
Very impressed with everything this vehicle has. Exceptional handling in
deep snow as well in 4WD with the Wrangler tires. One other plus though
less vehicle wise: the buying experience was outstanding in that I was
not hassled at all with sales gimmicks or pressure and bought using the
exact same prices quoted for options at Kelly. There were no games.
While this may not be at all GMC dealerships, I found this actually an
enjoyable 20 minute experience.

Weakness:

The front brakes will wear out sooner than most vehicles (usually by 20K).
The rear hold up like normal. I was aware of this characteristic prior
to buying due to internet reviews and found it an acceptable price to pay
comparatively. I've now got around 56K so far since buying this model on
a factory order. Besides the brake, I recently replaced the belt tensioner
which was going bad around 50K- that's all the failures I've encountered
so far. Gas milage is average for mid-size SUV's 12-29 MPG depending on
use and environment. Averages around 17 in Columbus day to day driving.

I have been overwhelmed on the performance and value the Jimmy has given
me in these past 5 years. I've given it a rigorous trial, though I am
a stickler for regular 3K oil changes. The body is in excellent condition
and I still get complements on it, though the brush bars give it an
additional appearance upgrade. Overall best value for your SUV dollar.
I will be a return GMC customer after this experience. I'm eying the
soon released 2002 Envoy which has improved milage and lots of new bells
and whistles!

I test drove the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nisson Pathfinder and found power
to be anemic compared to the Jimmy/Blazer 4.3. I didn't even try the
Explorer or other SUV's due to poor power reviews by auto magazines.
I required above average pick up as my minimal requirement and found
this was the best alternative to an expensive V-8 then offered on the
Jeep.

Strength:

Just about everything

Weakness:

The seats are a little too high and hard to see out of rearview and sideview mirrors when changing lanes.

I don't know what all the bad reviews are about. We purchased our first Jimmy in 1993 and were so pleased, we've purchased 2 more since then. They're great! The interior is great, the ride is great...can't think of anything too terribly bad to say. We had our '93 for 7 years and had no major problems.

Strength:

I truly can not think of anything at this time.

Weakness:

the worst qualities: ABS brakes are worst, the gas mileage, the repair prices which is adding up at this time, the inside plastic moldings/interior falling off, the check engine light is alway coming on at time, but goes off after a few day

I brought my truck new a 1995 GMC, I thought that I would be happy with this truck. On the 17th day after having this truck I kept hearing this noise which was coming from the dashboard, I took it back to the dealer only after a screw hit my foot. I was told that the dashboard had switched to the passenger side. Then, no sooner then that my steering wheel was off, I took the truck back again, this time I was told that there was nothing wrong, but it was after I took it somewhere else I was told that my tires had cupped and that there was problem with the front end, so back to the dealer I went. Again, I was told that there was nothing wrong with the front end but I have to get (2) new front tires (no cost to me this time because it was under warranty. But I keep hearing this sound. After going back and forward to the dealer I called the Headdquarter (GMC)and I had the change to buy out of the contract for 21,000, but I only had the truck a few months. So, let say so far I have replaced both upper and lower balljoints both side (front) replaced the brakes both back and front 3 times but before I forget the brakes were repaired the first time at 900 miles which also had the front rotor replaced. lucky me I had to have a male with me to get my money back, because I was told this is a truck and it rides hard. (smiles). As of today, I am still having lots and lots of trouble with this truck and today taking it because the engine light comes on. the ride is hard. And if I did not buy this truck new I would swear that it is possessed.

Seeing that others are having so many problems just lets me know that this model is a lemon.

Strength:

Great vehicle for the first three years while it was under warranty. Good fuel mileage for a vehicle like this. Comfortable seats, and good power.

Weakness:

There was one problem before the warranty ran out. At 10,000 miles, one of the original Uniroyal tires blew for no apparent reason. The gearbox was also replaced under warranty. But the Problems- Two months after my three year warranty expired- at 24,000 miles, I experienced several problems- a whining sound, a gurgling sound during acceleration, and electrical items such as the buzzer when you leave your lights on and park lights that would not work. I took it in to the dealership to have it repaired. They told me that the whining was an alternator about to go out, so I had it replaced. The gurgling was a clogged radiator and they said the fluid was thick and looked like mud. (the owner's book says the coolant lasts 150000 miles?) They told me I hadn't had the radiator flushed enough. So they did the power flush, and three months later, here is the sound again. The electrical problem was a short in a module, which cost a ridiculous amount in labor to have fixed. The result- a $625 repair bill for a car with less than 30,000 miles. Now I don't think the brakes are that good- I may be ready to try the new Ford Sport Trac or Escape.

Do not buy this vehicle unless you are going to trade it in as soon as the warranty runs out. It could be expensive, aggrevating, and dangerous.
