Honda CRV
Strength:
Honda reliablity and value. Excellent ride and gas milage. Smooth AWD when needed.
Weakness:
No low range 4x4. Just purchased a 2002 Honda CRV-EX. Vehicle is everything I expected from Honda. Ride is smooth and the new 160hp engine is more than enough power and gets excellet gas milage (about 28mpg on highway). Traded in 1997 CRV and got excellet trade-in value and it had 90,000miles on it. The 2002 has all the added accessaries that one needs, but added on running boards for the look. Strength:
Enough interior room to comfortably seat four adults (don''t even consider the Rav 4, Tracker, and Forestor if you need a back seat). 23 to 26 MPG More than enough power for a vehicle this size (very comparable to the 4-cylinder Outback). Smooth car like ride.
Weakness:
General handling is not has precise as the Outback and Passat. No available leather seating Fog lights and roof rack should be standard on the EX, not a dealer installed option. My wife and I were in the market for an AWD station wagon. We really liked the Subaru, but happened to look at the 2001 CR-V. It had great interior space and milage, but no power. We waited to see the 2002''s and were impressed enough to buy one a week later. The new 2002 CR-V has a great new 4-cylinder with more than enough power to cruise the Idaho freeways at 75 mph with the RPMs still under 3000. With the automatic transmision, it''s probably the smoothest, quietest 4 I''ve ever driven. The AWD system has had no problem with up to 4 or 5 inches of fresh snow on the roads. It definitely has a car suspension, and should not be compared to true offroad vehicles (I have a Ranger 4x4 for that). The back seat has more room than any of the competing compact SUV''s and definately more than an Outback or Passat wagon. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for an all wheel drive wagon, but tempted by the better visability and seating of an SUV. If you didn''t care for the styling of the old CR-V or the small noisy engine, take look at the new 2002. Strength:
Bigger, Faster, Quieter, Sturdier, and less toy like than the first generation.
Weakness:
Can''t adjust the distance between the cross rails on the rook rack. The second generation Crv is bigger then the first generation and it has maintained it''s good mileage. I have experienced a record setting 30 mpg twice on the highway, I never got that on the 98 Crv that I owned previously. I am very impressed with its power and smooth automatic transmission. It feels like I am driving something much more beefy but it still maintains it''s car like attributes. It feels somewhere between a car and a truck, and this is what I like best about the Crv. My significant other, drives around an Xterra and I love it, but if I drive it a lot I really get tired of the truck feel. I must say it takes bumps smoother and quieter than the first generation but some of the less common bumps seem louder. I cannot explain why, but it just seems to be that way. Maybe it is because there is less engine noise and less wind noise so the big bumps seem louder in contrast to the smooth quiet ride. I would love the roof rack, except I have an 18 foot sea kayak that I would like to put on top. The racks are not adjustable so I cannot space them as far as a part as I would like. Other than that, I think the rook rack is a step up. Similar Products Used: Nissan Xterra, Jeep, Explorer |

Strength:
Reliability, Japanese craftsmanship. Excellent AWD for inclement weather. Very good drive and feel. Great value for what you get. Gas consumption is good.
Weakness:
Revs quite high at 120km/h and above. Note that my 1998 only has 127 horses (1999 and up got a 20 horse boost). Dont like the centre console, cup holders are useless. No arm rest for 5-speeds, makes it uncomfortable for trips. Dont like placement of power switches for locks/windows. Rear door should open opposite way for North America...currently opens for Japanese market. Lack of power (torque and speed). I have a had a hugely successful run with the CRV. 3.5 years and I have had no problems whatsoever. Honda service and reliability have been excellent. Visibility is excellent and it handles like a car (based on Civic frame). The AWD works well in rain, snow and Ice (we get all of that for 5 months straight). Dont consider this vehicle if you want a truck feel and do a lot of off-roading. Although I have some peeves about some of the features of this vehicle, I dont feel they are very critical. I am definitely purchasing a new one when the 2002 comes out ... Strength:
Gas milage Manuverability (fun to drive) Space Comfort (the reclining rear seat is best in class) AWD Features (the picnic table and the storage under it are great!) Honda quality.
Weakness:
Could use some more power. Transmission is a little hesitant to upshift after cresting a hill. My wife and I were in the market for something a little larger and less costly to maintain than her Jetta. So we spent the better part of last summer researching and test driving wagons and suvs. After much consideration we decided on the CRV even though we couldn''t get as good a deal as we could with its competitors (they sell them about as fast as they come in). After over a year with the vehicle and taking it on seveal canoeing, hiking, and mtn biking trips I can say with confidence that we made the best choice. The engine and driveline are much smoother than its competitors and the build quality is superb. Even with bikes or a canoe on the roof we still averaged about 29 mpg on the highway. Overall an excellent vehicle. Similar Products Used: I own a ''95 Trooper and I love it. My parents have a Durango and its OK. Strength:
Build quality, economical and trouble free.
Weakness:
None I have been driving the crv for 2 months now. Very impressed with the build quality. Have had no problems with it so far. I find acceleration to be adequate. Most impressed with lots of space and ride. Cant wait to try out the 2002 CRV. Heard it is even better. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Gas mileage, roomy, lots of head/leg room
Weakness:
Not much power on long, steep hills. Drives like a car, sits like an SUV ... Love it!! I bought the CRV for gas mileage and for traveling, and it has been excellent. Went on a 2 week New England trip and slept in the back instead of the tent one night when it was raining. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Reliability, Solid Build and feel, good fuel consumption, heaps of features for the price and comfortable ride/safe feeling inside.
Weakness:
-Different to USA, this car does come with passenger armrest in Australia and daytime lights - in fact all of the omitted features commented on by other reviewers from US/Canada. I do agree however that the rear tailgate release and power window controls are in an awkward place. I am surprised by some of the comments of cheapness in US reviews. I always thought that US Customers had far more choice. Similar Products Used: Landcruiser Prado, Toyota Forunner. CRV more comfortable and less 'truck like' |

Strength:
Comfort, Driving position, Cruises at 80mph no problem, excellent fuel economy in most conditions (see weakness!) and easy to drive/park. Passenger Armrest installed by dealer at purchase (available for 99-2001 interior)
Weakness:
Needs more power. OK for most conditions but driving into a headwind or up a long hill requires a heavy foot and returns poor mileage due to engine working too hard. It has been quite possibly the best vehicle we've ever owned. Swallows tons of cargo, seats 4 in total comfort, gets great gas mileage, and handles like a car. A couple of little problems fixed by selling dealer with no problem, even one out of warranty he covered. Similar Products Used: Looked at RAV4 & Tracker, not impressed. Considered Blazer or Explorer but a lot more money and truck-like ride. Would seriously consider V6 Escape or Tribute at trade in though (are you listening, Honda? We need a stronger engine!) |

Strength:
The Cr-V is easy to handle in city traffic. The MPG are from 20 to 26 around heavy town driving.
Weakness:
The A/C has to be the biggest weakness. It blows and I don't mean that in a good way. I love the Cr-V. It still drives and rides like new. I have come to expect the most from the Honda line of vehicles and it will not let you down. Similar Products Used: The Rav4 does not come close to the Cr-V in room and performance. |
