Strength:

Power, Power, absolultly great as stock but even better with aftermarket computer chip, air intake, and exhaust. Now near 300 hp and no problems after 6 years. None

Weakness:

None, okay maybe the tire location inside but that is taken car of by a back tire mount.

It sounds like the newer jeep grand cherokees are having there troubles so my suggestion is to go with the good old trusty style of jeep. My 1995 is awsome and have had no troubles.

Strength:

My wife and I both own a 1999 GC. She has a 4.0 Laredo and mine is a 4.7 Limited with quadra track 2. The Limited is definitely a better car, much more power, better handling etc. The 4.0L six cylinder engine shows its age and lacks any power above 4,000 rpm. The V8 however is awsome. The Laredo was fitted with cheap awfull tires which account for its inferior handling (compared to the Limited). Overall, these are among the best SUV made. Superior handling, they will easily out-corner any SUV on the road except for the MB or BMW. You get the added bonus of having a superior off-road vehicle as well. Unlike the Ford Explorer which feels like a truck, the GC can be driven safely at regular sedan speed on paved roads and never show any unsafe handling. I use my limited to tow a boat which greatly exceed it 6500 lbs rating (for short distance) and the Jeep has no problem pulling!

Weakness:

The gas mileage could be improved, my V8 model actually gets slightly better mileage than the 6.The Limited however exhibit a slight rocking from side to side on bumpy roads. It is not dangerous but can sometimes be unconfortable. I think it might be due to the shocks absorbers. My wife's car had some minor glicks which were fixed by the dealer when we first got it. Both front windows stopped working and the right one fell off its track. This was taken care of by the dealer and no problem since. My Limited had a defective Fuel pump which resulted in poor starting and stalling. The pump was replaced under warranty at 1000 miles and no problem ever since. The pump was working but not putting out enough pressure to feed the engine correctly. Overall the car have been great, the rear brake pads were replaced at 15,000 miles for the Laredo and 17,000 miles for the Limited. I am somewhat astonished at that since the front brakes are usually more stressed than the rear. (in most cars that is!)

A good car but Chrysler needs to improve its manufacturing quality control.
Definitely the best value for the money. Highest towing rating in its class.

Strength:

1. Well designed and sleak interior (especially for an American car).

Weakness:

1. Like most other Gr. Cherokee drivers, the worst about the G.C. was the brake shuddering at 15K mi.
2. Another problem is slight squeaks on the left rear wheel when going over bumps or potholes. I addressed the problem to the dealer (Connell C-J in Oakland) and they could not hear the noise and it still bothers me. 3. The shocks are a bit hard and the ride gets rough when driving on poorly paved roads.
4. Rough transmission.

2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo
I was drawn to the G.C. by its design and reputable 4WD system. My previous vehicle was a leased 1998 Jeep Cherokee which was totally problem-free. This led me to the G.C. after the lease ended but I regret it now and its a fortune to end the lease early(19 mon. more to go). I've never had a car with such poor brakes that ran out at 15K mi. I called Jeep Customer Service but they repeated that brakes are covered only for 12K mi./12 mon. So I reluctantly paid for the replacements. Yet, I just read today in 'Consumer Guide for 2001 Vehicles' that their test vehicle had the exact problem at 15K mi. and Jeep replaced the brakes for them because Jeep had extended their warranty for the brakes to 24K mi./24 mon. due to frequent complaints. You guys should all read about this in the Consumer Guide if you look up the column about Jeep G.C. Please provide any suggestions in which I can go about contacting Jeep to inquire about this because I want to get the $300 back I paid for those cheap brakes.

DaimlerChysler (Jeep) really disappointed me this time and no wonder they're losing so much money. It'd be hard to persuade me to buy another DaimlerChryler product anymore. Beware of its poor dealer service and horrendous maintenance fees as they frequently possess a "I don't care attitude" and do little to try solve your problems. This G.C. makes me realise the importance of the free maintanence plans provided by more luxury brands.

Strength:

Makes it to the dealership for repair well enough!

Weakness:

Everything else.

Mike from CT....you need to play nice! Just because you have the one Jeep that they made that actually works right does not mean you need to throw that in every other dissatisfied Jeep owner's face!
Barbie, I feel your pain. My rotors have been replaced or cut down 3 times,it comes out to every 10k miles. The car starts shaking so hard, it would knock your fillings out! They had to replace the front shocks, both front tires (the belts kept breaking because the front end is so misaligned), the u-joint on the front axle, I can't even keep going. I wish I had found this site before I bought this car. The Jeep is a big piece of junk (well, except Mike's from CT). MY advice for anyone looking at a Dodge/Chrysler product.....RUN THE OTHER WAY!!! Chrysler could care less that their cars are this defective. I am currently in arbitration over this vehicle, trying to get a buy-back. This car was the biggest mistake I ever made.

Model Reviewed: Grand Cherokee Ltd. 5.2L

Strength:

Love the styling, great power. I'm short 5'4" and the seats adjust just fine for me. I like the way this vehicle handles. It has Quadra trac and that makes it much more positive handling in the snow, ice, rain, mud etc. It has the 4-wheel disc brakes ABS...a good thing.

Weakness:

That spare tire in the back. They could have done better in placing it somewhere else (I know they changed it in later models). The factory luggage rack is lame and I replaced it with a Yakima rack. Some of the dash instruments and controls are behind the steering wheel making it difficult for me so see and reach. I have a few rattles and interior noises that I find distracting and when I decelerate or disengage the cruise control there is a clunk caused by the cable linkage from the engine.

I've owned this vehicle for a year and it now has 134,000 miles on it with no major problems (knock on wood). I had to replace the oil pressure send unit so far. Everyone seems to complain about MPG, but even with a V8 I've been averaging somewhere between 19-21 mpg (and I'm not lying either!). If you own one of these make sure you change oil every 3,000 miles and have the drive train fluids changed regularly (I have it serviced with T-Tech total replacement). It appears that certain years are definately better than others for these vehicles. As far a recommending Jeep, I would say it's up to the individual to do research and test driving themselves because when it comes down to it, the decision is subjective anyways.

Strength:

Its super quick, for an SUV, the interior seats are exceptionally soft and comfortable, there is plenty of storage room, Infinity gold sound system is truly A+ for a factory system. All kinds of buttons and controls. Quadra- drive transmission has the best traction capabilities of any jeep.

Weakness:

Paint quality is less than superb, but better than average. Requires lots of TLC if not waxed well.

The car is great and looks fabulous after a good washing and waxing and buffing. The black paint really shines! There is plenty of traction to go around, and the only time i have gotten the tires to break loose was when i was four wheeling and did a donut. The cd-player never skips, unlike the navigator does when you use a burned cd, and the sound is very good. I especially like the quality of the engine. I got a flowmaster exhaust and a k&n air filter, the combination of the two gave it about and extra 25-30hp. So my jeep now, has at LEAST 245hp and over 305lb ft of torque. if you buy one, i would reccomend doing that. By the way, these jeeps will smoke any and all v6 mustangs, remember that when some punk kid wants to race you.

Lincoln Navigator- it has all of the features that the lincoln has, but having driven a navigator for over a year, i can say it is a better vehicle, everything to how the buttons feel when you push them is better.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer- definitely nicer than my dads 1989 Wagoneer, but wagoneer had more power, the 5.9l 360CI engine. That jeep was strong enough to pull a moving truck out of a ditch one day. It too had good features (relative to 1989). remember those awful looking mustangs of those days!

Strength:

Solid I6 engine, Great stero/CD player, Large enought to carry a lot of gear but small enought to drive well and rides nice for a truck.

Weakness:

Front brake rotors are junk! Brake rotors should not wear out in 15,000 miles on any vehical. I replaced them with PowerSlot rotors and Raybestso QS Pad and have had no more trouble. A lot of wind noise for a vehical that cost over $31000!

Over all I really like this vehical execpt for the brakes and wind noise. I believe the best part of the vehcial is the steering wheel radio controls.

Strength:

The 5.2 liter V8 has tons of power.
The rear seat has lots of space.

Weakness:

It is mechanically unreliable. Every time we have taken it to the dealer for a routine maintenance, they have found significant problems that go from the brakes to the steering.
The dealer service is the worst I have ever experienced. I would call them crooks. They are unresponsive, unreliable and lie through their teeth. I have taken it to two dealers with equal results.
The five-star program is a joke.

After spending over $3,000 in repairs in 2 1/2 years, I would never buy another Jeep product again. I will not put up with the terrible quality and the lousy dealer network. My suggestion is to avoid this at all costs.

Strength:

Stengths, I suppose it does have some. The ride is nice compared to my 95 Dodge Dakota 4x4 short bed. The engine seems to be strong.4x4 works pretty good so far.

Weakness:

Like most I have read here today...where to start.
I have owned this vehicle a little more than a week and already I have to replace the radiator, thermostat and belt.
The typical crack in the exhaust manifold, which I fixed for $10!!! if anyone else has this problem, either buy a aftermarket header for the I-6 or use a product called Permatex, it's a liquid metal made for manifolds and headers and with stands heat up 2000 degrees. My exhaust leak is 95% gone with this stuff!
The tranny seams rough, but so far shifts ok, have a battery drain when I shift into reverse????
The interior is noisy over bumps, but it is almost 7 years old.
The transfer case and tranny pan leak constantly.
The front end needs some new ball joints and possibly a steering stabilizer.

I blame most of the weeknesses on the used car dealer and neglect from the previous owner. It will take some time and money, but I will get this SUV to perform and run like it should.
The truck seems to be "ok", this is my first SUV aside of a 85 Bronco I owned about 10 years ago. I have not been off-road yet or driven it in the winter to see what the hype is about with this 4WD system.

Plan on buying an extended warranty from a third party company to cover yourself. I have not bought one yet, but plan on spending the money for the very first time of buying a warranty. I don't trust it enough not too.

Anyone living in the New England area looking for a used car or SUV, DO NOT buy a vehicle from Automile Wholesalers on RT125 in NH, they do not stand behind their vehicles and do not do any maintenance before they sell them to you. Everything they tell you is a line just to rope you in to buying from them. The one NICE vehicle they have on their lot is the truck I just traded in to them for this junk JEEP.

I'll need more time to be fair on the Jeep review.

Poor repair history. Can't wait to trade Jeep in for the new Toyoto Highlander SUV.
