Strength:

Off-road capability, style

Weakness:

Nagging minor mechanical problems

Purchased with 73,000 miles. Use as daily driver, with some off-roading during hunting season. Reasonably good highway ride, great off-road. 6 cylinder engine is a little underpowered for towing.

Have had a few gremlins. Cruise control out twice (still doesn't work, and it's gotten me a couple of speeding tickets). Ignition coil failed and left me stranded on the way to work. Radiator started leaking, exhaust manifold cracked. Now has 104,000 miles. Within next year will be relegated to role of third vehicle behind wife's minivan and my yet-to-be-determined sport sedan. I'd love to make it last 10-12 years, 150K+ miles without major expenditure.

Manages to get us around in heavy snow conditions.

Weakness:

Poor quality of materials, adn poor workmanship. So far, interval wipers don;t work (have been fixed, but the motor burned out again), interference form engine means AM radio is useless, rear wiper has died, Alarm system stinks...goes off at unexpected times and is dependent upon the single remote entry key we have(can't open door with key except via tailgate), brakes have been replaced couple times, A/C system is terrible...very disappointed, and will not buy another Jeep. Can hardly wait to trade in.

I thought the Jeep would be a solid vehicle, instead of a fragile, fall apart machine. It is good in our winter conditions, but that would not convince me to buy Jeep again.

Fine looking, they run and run, picked this up for my 3rd jeep running, my other jeeps (93 cherokee sport w/183500 miles & 88 jeep comanche w/315000 miles

Weakness:

Suspension has a problem with rocking side to side, otherwise not much else. should give you a full size spare though.

All around good buy, even after 300000 miles mine never needed any major work except for brake lines. Great for women and men, handles off road better than any other truck I've driven (only ever got stuck once :)

Good power on the V8.I like the radio controls on the steering wheel.

Weakness:

Loud air noise when driving on the freeway. Problem with the power windows. They sometimes don't do what you want. It sticks until I put the car in drive and step on the brake. Damn if they don't work then! But the most serious problem I have had began a couple of months after purchasing the vehicle the "Check Engine Light" began coming on. I also began experiencing hard starts and easy stalls. The most recent stall happened while I was making a left turn as a city bus was approaching. After a dozen visits to the dealership I applied for a Lemon Law arbitration hearing. The vehicle was declared a "Lemon" and I am in the process of being refunded the monies I put up to purchase it and the monies I have since put into it.

The constatnt "Check engine light" problem was too much of a safety issue for me to continue keeping this vehicle. The windows and the noise were minor compared to the stalling/starting problems. I am currently searching for another SUV to buy but I don't think I would try another JEEP.

Nice looks, color, nice leather seats, great sound system Infinite Gold System, comfortable seats, no outside noise. fair gas mileage, all out comfortable ride

Weakness:

Brakes are very squeaky! Very bumpy ride off raod, rear spare tire should be placed on the outside instead of the inside thus reducing cargo capacity.

All in All i have had no problems with my car in the last 14 months of use, I am extreamly happy with my truck, it drives great on the road, its a liittle bumpy off road, but i dont do much off roading anyway, it has great acceleration, ice cold a/c, very comfortable seats. One of the best cars that i have owned.

Nothing Really.

Weakness:

Everything....What a total waste of time and money. I've had the usual brake problems...the rotors were turned after 1500 miles. It looks like they need to be done again after 7000 miles. Had the front driveshaft replaced after 1000 miles due to high noise levels and steering wheel vibrations at speed. Now it looks like the rear end is going. I still have the vibration problem through the steering wheel and pedals. The Dealer said it was caused by a miss-routed gas pedal cable. I still have the problem after it being fixed and now the whole floor of the car vibrates as well. Very rough engine at idle and poor overall performance. Car pulls to the right under normal conditions as well as under braking. Transmission jolts when going into drive as well as when changing gear under normal driving conditions. The dealer can't seem to "replicate" these problems (what a surprise). I know have the Chrysler service rep coming out to look at the vehicle.

I will never buy another Chrysler product period....terrible product/customer service and a general couldn't care attitude. The dealer (River Front Chrysler Jeep) is a total waste of time. I wouldn't advise you to buy anything from them. It's a shame really.....the JGC could be an awesome vehicle but at nearly $40,000 the quality and customer service just don't cut it. I don't think you'd see these problems in an Audi Quattro.

Weakness:

Solid if you want to get a used one, but find one with low mileage.....dont buy the 1999 model, there are a lot of bugs in that car. Supposedly the bumpers are weak.

Strength:

I like the overall appearance of the vehicle and also the interior is better than other SUVs I looked at.

Weakness:

always something wrong or doesn't feel right.

I bought the vehicle in february of 2000 and to date I have replaced my window regulator motor once, my brake rotors three times due to the rotors warping and I'm starting to feel the vibrations again (fourth time). I have also replaced the drive shaft due to a noise/thump it was making when ever coming to a full stop or taking off. There is also a crunching noise when going over bumps when the temp is below about 35 degrees. the list goes on and on. does any one know if anything is being done about the brake rotor issue?

Good acceleration, nice exterior and interior, great sound system, nice ride. Nice paint.

Weakness:

BRAKES!!! Replaced front rotorspads at 15K and 30k miles. Replaced rear rotorspads at 35k miles. Brakes wear out way too fast and when you replace them, you usually start feeling the brake pedal pulsate after only a few thousand miles because the rotors start warping. Wind noise from windows during highway driving is sometimes annoying. Catalytic converter replaced at 50K miles(but I guess that's expected). Replaced front axle seal at 50K miles. Passenger seat came loose and dealer can't seem to fix it. Annoying squeaking noise coming from the drive shaft output seal(usually when it gets dry after a good rain). Strange humming noise sometimes when shifting in reverse. Lastly, on cold starts, when backing out of my driveway then braking for 20 to 30 seconds to wait for cars to clear, when I let go of the brake to contnue in reverse the transmission seems to get out of reverse and into neutral. Need to rev the engine a bit and it pops back into reverse. I noticed this started happening after my mechanic changed my transmission and transfer case fluids. He used ATF+2 which my dealer confirmed was correct.

I leased my 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo in October 1997. I racked up a total of 46K miles in 3 years which is 10k miles over the lease limit. I was going to turn in the Jeep at the end of the lease and pay the over-milage penalty($1500.00) and was going to buy a 1997 Audi A6 Quattro for $22,000.00 with 35K miles. But since I was very happy with the GC with no major problems and liked the looks so much, I decided to purchase it at the end of the lease. I got a really good deal on it. The lease company(World Omni) had a special promotion going so they offered me the GC for 18,000.00. The original residual was 20,400.00. Plus I purchased the extended Gold Package Warranty for $1,200.00 which covers me for 100k miles. I noticed that all of the 1998 Grand Cherokee reviews on this site had no major problems and that years before and after have had most of them. I would have to agree with my fellow 1998 Grand Cherokee owners on this site when they say that 1998 is probably the best year with little or no problems except BRAKES!!!
