Looks, Paint, 4.0L engine

Weakness:

BRAKES! Front roters/pads @ 10k,25k,and Front and Rear roters @ 60k. Cheap plastic on inside, Replaced plastic around shift lever two times, Fuel guage does strange things, Rear window wiper works at times and some times it doesn't, Rust on Freon hoses (will wait for the leak), Has about 70k on it now and everthing feels really loose.

Good looks, has had no major problems, but a lot of little nagging ones. Hope Jeep will get this brake thing figured out!

Strength:

It does great offroad . . . oh yea, and did I mention that it does great offroad? Unfortunately, that's the end of the positive comments I can make about this vehicle.

Weakness:

Extremely poor quality and constant problems. Manufacturer also could care less - once they "steal" your money that is.

This is by far, the WORST vehicle I've ever owned. It's broken down so many times that I'm starting to worry about even taking it on a trip. Pretty bad for a vehicle with a sticker price of $36,500.

So far, the door seals were bad, ruining the carpet within the first month. The carpets were replaced. A few months later we discovered that the fuel gage was defective showing more fuel than was really in the tank (this problem was known by Chrysler but they didn't tell us) causing my wife to run out of gas in a McDonalds drive thru - she had to get out and push the truck while everyone waited in line behind her. Then there was the defective bearings in the rear end - new bearings had to be put in the differential after 20 some thousand miles. They didn't do it right, and it had to be redone a month later.

The list is really too long to cover, but we've had numerous electrical problems that they just can't seem to figure out how to fix, the seat heater shorted out, the electric mirrors go where ever they want to no matter how you set them, and the computer went out. When they worked on one of the computers, they removed the seat and broke off the bolt that holds the seat down when they reinstalled it. They left it that way and gave us the truck back. Later I noticed the seat was moving and discovered the rear bolt was broken - if we'd been in an accident the seat surely would have come loose from the floor.

The brake rotors had to be replaced (which I did myself) after less than 25,000 miles. (Although I put heavy duty rotors on, three months later when my wife took it to the dealer to get it inspected, they claimed the rotors needed to be turned and then proceeded to ruin them). Now it needs it's third set of rotors.

The water pump has just gone out, the oxygen sensor (the new ones should last 100,000 miles), and it sounds like the transmission is next. There were many more problems that I just don't have time to get into, but this is all with only around 50,000 miles - I wouldn't buy this truck again for 1/10 the price! If you're thinking of getting one DON'T - it's the BIG ripoff!

V8, driving the New England corridor (getting tiny moments of road rage satisfaction) is a dream. Looks - prior to the BMW X5 thought it was the best looking Sport SUV on the market (at 2/3 the price). Sound system - Marilyn Manson never sounded so good :)

Weakness:

Back seats, but what do I care.. they fold down nicely for cargo (skis, etc).

Response to latest Reviews: Barbie, you are what your name says you are... buy a Yugo and you shouldn't have to have your "brakes and rotors" replaced, let alone a Jeep! Mike from Florida -- the whirr is a known problem with the upscale Quadra-Drive 4WD kit, thank god I had a good dealership to tell me it was nonsense in the first place (and where in Maryland would you use such a feature?). I spent the greater of 6 months looking at SUV's and useless sport sedans at about the same price. I, through test drives and intense scrutiny, purchased the V8 limited edition and would NEVER turn back. For the price, there *was* no better vehicle on the road... and although I have not reviewed the current field of 2000-2001's I still don't believe there is. I drive to Vermont every other weekend and have had ZERO, I said ZERO, problems (and I am no pussy-foot). At 41,000 miles I have never had any major maintenance, tires, brakes, rotors, engine trouble, etc... ROCK SOLID! Mileage? Buy an Accord... if you planned to take an Accord "off-road" what kind of mileage would you expect? I am sorry for the people to have claimed they got "lemons", mine was a 1999 1/2 (2000 blue paint) and I really have no complaints.

5th Jeep owned the current 2001 and last 1999 have been horror stories

Weakness:

1999 (new model year) everything (almost) went wrong--brakes, drive shaft, rear end, suspension and especially electrical spent more time in the shop than on the road dealer finally corrected electrical by replacing all controllers including body controller finally, in desperation broke my lease (at great cost) and to make the deal at least reasonable I had to get another jeep, a 2001 loaded model--this one has a defective steering set up with incorrect hoses feeding fluid to the unit and a droaning noise at all low speeds which seems to rumble throughout the vehicle-3 different dealers all verify the problem, state DB/Chrysler are well aware of it and their engineers are working on a solution--complaint to Chrysler produced a promise a zone manager would contact me within 48 hours which was a week ago and still no reply-Contention: DB/Chrysler produced the vehicle well aware of the defective parts and sold it anyway (defective part was part of a cost saving project and is a safety factor and hazard) Just like the 1999 model year brake problem-they did not address what they knew was wrong until the 2000 model year

Poor design and inferior customer relations approach--MB is well aware of the problem but won't act until there is a serious string of accidents and injuries They are arrogant and have a very poor social and customer approach

Looks nice, handles well - I've only had it since July of 2000.

I can't believe that I have 10,000 miles on it and had to have the breaks and rotors replaced. The dealership told me that it was from city driving and the starting and stopping process. Now I am not a mechanic - but that sounds a little bizaar to me. I work 12 miles from home and do not live in the city. I asked the dealership if this was something that I was going to have to replace every 10,000 miles and they said it depends how I drive it! That to me is crazy!!! I thought it was built to take abuse for off road journey's! I haven't even put it in 4-wheel drive yet!!! I am not happy at all about replacing something like that in such a short amount of time. I informed the dealership that I will discourage future Jeep owners if it is in fact true that Jeeps eat breaks and rotors that quick!! I am shocked to discover that this break situation is not an uncommon complaint!! Chrysler must think we are fools... The future of my Jeep ownership may not be a long one!!! I will give it a little more time - but if it happens again - Up Goes the For Sale Sign!!!!!!

It's looks are what most Jeep owners love. I am one of the many who are enamered by it's *coolness*. It *feels* good when you drive, very solid ride. It does have a few quirks that you either live with, or fight for your entire ownership duration. For the first 15 to 20 thousand miles it's great, after that....look out. I bought mine used and LOW mileage. I just could'nt help but be drawn by the *looks*. Seats are nice, steering is good, traction is great in all weather.

Weakness:

Where do I start? The "whirrrrr" sound coming from the front differential or axle or bearings or....what hell, it just "whirrrrrrs' and whines at 60+ mph, going down the freeway. I've replaced both axles, both hub bearings,2 sets of rotors, brake pads...I've replaced the front end about twice now...to NO avail. I tried to let the dealer do it the first time (They suck!) But, still the same whinning noises and clumping "rotors".....THEY "dealer", explained that the all time 4wd is susceptible to making noise at higher speeds.

What????????
So much noise it drives me crazy??? Yea..right and monkeys should fly out my a$$ too...and I should just get used to it??
BS....I've taken more than adequate care for this vehicle.. You won't find a JAPANESE car that has recurring problems that they cannot be fixed fix,i.e. my wife's '97 Toyota Camry.

And if any JEEP reps just happened to be reading these posts:
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Get rid of it...hey, I got an idea!! How bout just releasing the Full time 4wd and have it go into 2wd except, WHEN YOU NEED Four Wheel DRIVE!!!
Damn! That sounds like an excellant freaking idea...because it seems you can't figure out why your front-ends are making so much noise after short mileage!
The gas mileage is ok..for the 6 cylinder,I put a K&N filter and Jacobs ignition in....both work good>>> I gained about 2.5 mpg.

This is probably the common theme of a Jeep GC owner...it's good SUV,BUT! The noises and other drivetrain related problems are not worth 20,30,40 thousand dollars. Got it?? At some point these problems will come back and bite you on the a$$ "Chrysler/Jeep/Daimler"...or whoever will own the company next year.

Customers don't always have to be first nor right....but, your cars and SUV's should. nuff said.

Everything except for the gas consumption, but it is a truck, and a 5.9 liter v8.. what do you expect?

Weakness:

This is a 98, and according to all the reviews, the best jeep ever made. Previous years had some problems with the transmission, apparently fixed in 98. In 99 they were totally redesigned, and apparently for the worst. I have a friend who has a 99, and his computer went out in the middle of the road, so his car stalled.. as a semi was heading towards him.. scarry.. it was a fuel injector computer.. In short, the 98 is a great year for Grand Cherokee.. but it is the only great year.. THe ones made after that are smaller, and crapier..

Cuts through MN bad winter country snow (have AT 16" tires)
Looks turn heads even though it seems like 1/3 of MN SUVs are GJCs
I6 has plenty of getup and go, don't let the magazine reviewers turn you off to the old reliable

Weakness:

Mileage even w/I6 2WD mode (see summary) but has plenty of power vs former 3.3L V6 Caravan
Could use a couple more inches inside for 6'4" driver - glad have dual pwr seats but its 4 1/2 person vehicle
I got a good deal with special certificate but the sticker prices are outrageous for the avg buyer (but so were Explorers, Jimmys and sheez on Expeditions, Tahoes, etc - what a rip off)

I had not read this column since buying the GJC in mid December but based on March things have gone downhill in other reviews. Despite some others who've had problems, my wife and I REALLY LOVE our 2001 GJC LAREDO!!! It's loaded with heated leather seats, premium sound, towing, champagne color. I wanted a Laredo vs Limited since I did NOT want the V8 and AWD (more on that later), 17" tires, and too tall for a sunroof - all the dealer's limiteds had all those options. I had a Chrysler "friends a family" certif saving $1K off dealer price plus got rebate AND low interest in Dec so compared to the loaded Ford Escape we looked at (nice little SUV but had 5 recalls in first 5 mons) we went with the GJC for roughly same total cost of buy and finance. Granted we only have 4600 mis but this is the ONLY vehicle we have ever purchased that did NOT have some nit or major thing wrong in 1st few months (compared to 1 Chevy, 3 Pontiac GPs and 2 Caravans all new in past 20 yrs). SO FAR QUALITY IS TOP NOTCH! Knock on wood I will say that 2-3 yrs from now, I did buy a basic ext warranty I can extend if bugs crop up, hopefully this review will not jinx me!

Now why the "old" heavy I6 and Selectrac? Well 3 prior owners gave me glowing reports of GJCs they have owned since the 90s all very satisfied (only 1 trans case repair in 400K miles collectively) but 2 strongly recommended staying with the old tech tried and true I6 and selectrac. A friend mechanic confirms that.
The I6 is also very easy to service (I still do basic mechanic work OFL, Plugs, brakes, filters). I have no trailer but may get a small boat someday so the I6 should do the trick. It starts very well in a record cold MN Dec with I suspect 10W30 oil still in from the factory (I will put in 5W30 next winter). Mileage is nothing to scream about (15.7 avg city/hwy so far...19 on freeway...22 best on 55 mph 2 lanes) but I knew that going in. So no complaints...so far. Would be interested in hearing from other 2001 I6 owners too. Wife insisted on leather seats but glad we got the heaters! Premium CD stereo is a screamer, outdoes my 100W home system and love the steering wheel controls.

There is nothing positive that I can share about the product of the clowns that developed this bastard of a vehicle. I'm a GM Powertrain Engineer and my wife and I got hooked on styling. I've been fighting in court DC for 1.5 years and they still don't know I exist. In fact their lawyer showed up unprapared for trial back in January.

Weakness:

The company's attitude, I won my law suite any they offered me $500.
DC management should be blamed of thier unethical abuse to their customers, and should pay for there irresponsible choices. This product will kill somebody if not properly fixed. DC has attemped to fix the transmission over 10 times, today they just choose to ignore the problem.

I have had this vehicle in over 20 times in less than 30,000 miles. If anyone buys a Jeep they need to have their head examined. Transmission calibration is so poor that the aggressive shifting destroyed my ring and pinion gear. The windows stoped wotking twice. Rust has appeared on almost every body joint and under the hood. It is hard to start. The tires lock up at highway speeds when downshifting. The gages stopped working one day. The headlights flicker. The brakes went out at 20,000 miles. DC says they will fix the problems but I have heard every excuse in the book. It is still under warrenty and they just had it in the shop for 2.5 weeks to fix the transmission locking up. 10 miles out of the shop the transmission locked up again after the 10th attempt to repair (I have it on video tape). I bought my wife a Pontiac GTP and she drove that through the snow this year. I actually felt better about the decision. What a pile. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that the Germans won't pull it together fast enough to save them this time. By the way I'm selling it, any takers?

Looks good, feels safe, handles well in the snow

Weakness:

Crap central! I have 50,000 miles on this car and it is literally falling apart. The windshield rattles, for gods sake. In the past two months I have had it in the shop 4 times and had 5 parts replaced. The alignment is constatnly off, it makes noises from random places, the 4 wheel drive doesn't always kick in, and the rear speakers have stopped working. To top it all off, the Jeep service department at Mckean Jeep in Pittsburgh is absolutely pathetic. Not only are they unreliable, but they are rude and arrogant. It's one thing to build a crappy car, but how about at least having good customer service.

I've read in several places that Jeeps are either good or bad. If you get a good one you'll be able to drive it to 100,000 miles without a problem. If you get a bad one, well, starting saving your money for repairs and bus tokens. Unless you're willing to gamble $30k, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the looks and Jeep's marketing. This car is junk!!
