Strength:

Good truck for the $$, looks good, easy to drive, raised rear seats, great cargo room, 4WD easy to use.

Weakness:

MPG is obvious, added power of supercharger not worth additional loss of MPG. Base engine should probably be 190-210 rather than the 170. Interior can seem a bit "cheap", however, at 10k less than a 4WD 4-Runner...I''m not complaining.

Only wish I could have found an alpine green color...got the black instead.

Model Reviewed: Xterra 4wd 5-sp. manual

Strength:

adequate power; go-anywhere capable; available with stick shift; huge cargo space.

Weakness:

Engine noisy, flimsy heater knobs; gear lever too far to right - like driving a bus. Steering vague, but we all know that, and the weaknesses don''t detract from the overall value.

I agonized oner this decision - replaces 1991 4-Runner with 4-cyl 116 hp engine. Nearly opted for the LandRover Freelander. The Xterra wins - it''s solid, capable and huge. People say it doesn''t have enough power - with stick shift it has plenty.

Model Reviewed: XTERRA SE 2WD

Strength:

Reliablity and dependablity. An affordable, no frills SUV. Good ride and solidly built. Fun to drive.

Weakness:

I won''t bother bring up the miles-per-gallon issue. We''ve heard it time and again with the Xterra. Quit crying people. You knew the mpg before buying this SUV. It''s on that price sticker on the side window.

Overall, I''m very content with the Xterra. Absolutely no surprises and have lived up to its name. A no frills truck-based SUV for a competetive price. If leather and lace isn''t what you''re looking for in a SUV, then this may be your choice.

Model Reviewed: Xterra SE Super Charged 4x4 Auto

Strength:

The super charger is awesom. The power is really great and I feel like Mad Max when I hit the gas! Very quiet interior. Very reasonable ride for a real truck. Excellent suspension travel. Good room in back and lots of cargo space. Looks great with the Grill Guard set. Good toweing capacity.

Weakness:

For this price there are no weaknesses.

Great Value for the money. Perfect size. Good alternative to a Jeep Wrangler but with much more room. Very utilitarian as advertised. Your money goes to the rugged drivetrain. Great all around fun SUV. Nothing fancy but very functional and gets the job done. Fun, go-anywhere SUV to drive and looks great. This is NOT the SUV for the person that wants wood trimmed dash and 12 way leather power seats.

Strength:

Great looks, well-thought interior, lots of cargo room, good vehicle for the money and has good safety ratings(see crashtest.com)

Weakness:

Gas mileage, needs a little more power(Pathfinders just got standard 240bhp). Also, (although not directly related to the car) I was not happy to see how Nissan corporation is trying to stomp on a little guy--while doing my research, I tried www.nissan.com--only to find that some guy (who''s name happens to be Nissan) is being sued by the car manufacturer for rights to the domain name. This guy has been doing legitimate business USING HIS OWN NAME for years and now Nissan comes along and wants the guy to give up the name that he was smart enough to register before the whole Nissan corporation. Check it out for yourself. I sent a "hate mail" to Nissan Auto when I read about it--I still like my Xterra though!

Great vehicle for the money. If you''re looking for refinement, skip the Xterra. It just seems to beg for a muddy, off-road excursion. I bought the SE model w/4WD and auto transmission. I just couldn''t fathom owning one of these without 4WD. Only "want" I didn''t get was the color. Searched forever for the green, but settled for black.

Smooth and comfortable ride. It simply xceeds my previous SUV/Car: Ford Escape for comfort, apperance, and off road capability. A great utility in design and looks!!! Hands down for this beautiful machine.

PRICE, AND AMOUNT OF UPGRADES AVAILABLE

Weakness:

POWER, FUEL ECONOMY, WEAK BODY IN ACCIDENTS

THE CAR DRIVES A LIITLE BUMPY, AND HAS A LOT OF ROAD NOISE. A WHISTLING SOUND COMES FROM UNDER THE DASH. I HAD LEATHER AND FRONT AND BACK GUARDS PUT ON, A HITCH, PIAA SUPER WHITE LIGHTS, AND A COMPLETELY NEW STEREO SYSTEM, BECAUSE THE UPGRADED ONE SOUNDED TERRIBLE.

Model Reviewed: SE 4wd 5 speed

Strength:

Fun to drive 4wheel drive Over all vehicle quality Audio Roof rack Functional brush bar Full vehicle frame Inside and outsite storage Smooth 5 Speed very easy to shift Engine Torque and Limited slip dif. 16" Tires...make sure you ask for BFG or Goodyear

Weakness:

Sloppy painting on Hatch door jam and inside gas tank door. Body roll, I suggest stronger gas shocks Sun roof...not practical

We selected the Xterra because of the value. What we got was much more. We have a Solar Yellow (color) with factory brush bar, tail light covers and Tow hitch. This vehicle drives smooth and handles very well. It is responsive and fun to drive. I think more then anything, it is a cross between the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand. We gave up leather and lots of bells when we traded the Jeep GC but what we recieved is quality and the fun factor. I recommend this vehicle to anyone who is not trying to make a "I''ve arrived" statement. We gave up the Jeep GC Limited and rather then go for the Lexus, Mercedes, etc. We downsized and selected the Xterra, what a great choice we made.

Strength:

Everything I discussed along with all of the the available upgrades both Nissan and aftermarket...the 5000 K towing cap. is also a big plus for trailer pullers like me and I just went from Houston to Chicago with a fully loaded utility trailer and the X was a running dandy up and back in 90 degree daytime driving.

Weakness:

Somewhat underpowered, low MPG''s , super cheap interior materials and a whimppy front bumper system....My upgrades have solved most of these problems as I have installed an ARB winch bumper on the front, towing hitch on the back, Hella 6000 Metal''s, Yakima boat racks, Yakima rear bike carrier, and husky mats from stem to stern.

I have owned them all.....when I bought the new Xterra, I traded in a full sized Chev. Tahoe two door FWD. I have also owned many other SUV''s and including the first generation SUV''s like the International Scout and others. My Xterra is the BEST one yet. The price, frame durability, available packages and cool rack are just a few of the the items that pushed me to buy it. My great experience with a 92 Pathfinder was also a driving force. It had 200 K on it when I traded it and it was strong as a bull''s tail. My X is the tan color and I have all three packages on it. I cannot believe it was so inexpensive for all that I got.

Strength:

Look. Roof rack, cargo area - fitted my needs these years. Step rails are also a +. Lots of accessories are available.

Weakness:

At 170hp, the engine is underpowered, imho. I wonder how bad the 4 cilinder might be... Cheappy materials used in interior. Sound system is not what I expected - and it is the "upgraded" package. Bad gas mileage - about 13mpg in the city. Too many creaks/rattle sounds - I need to go again to the dealership to fix those...

I own this car for 2 years now, and drove it about 10k miles. I had no problems with the engine or electric system during this time. I find the car easier to drive, with no steering problems. Seats are comfy enough for me. It had a good behavior on rear-impacts in 2 collisions I had. The only major annoying for me are the rattling sounds I hear when driving over street bumps, etc. While these might be dued of neglijent repairs, there might also be caused by design flaws. Hitting the rear bumper of a new car at dealership produced the same sounds. 4WD worked fine for me while driving in 6" snow. If you like to accelerate while turning, it''s wise to have it in 4wd on rainy whether (rear-wheel 2wd might cause the car to skid).

In 1999, this car was the best buy for the money I spent. Now it might have some competitors in the same mid-price range SUVs: FordEscape, JeepLiberty. Most likely now I''d look more towards a Jeep...
