Model Reviewed: Ext cab, 4x4 4.8L

Strength:

Cofortable seats, ride, handling, AC, Radio, on the fly 4WD.

Weakness:

Tires, I replaced them at 800 miles after getting 3 flats in 1 week. I put on Michellan LTX-AT's, no flats in 20,000 miles. Seat belt inertial lock (locks up at the slightest bump in the road).

I use it about 95% highway, 5% 4X4, very little city driving. The 4.8L downshifts a lot every time I go over an overpass, but I expected it. I don't tow with it. The AC works great, can get too cold even when it's 100 degrees outside. I have driven 14 hours without much discomfort. I can only go about 2 hours in my friends Tundra. The Tundra seems like a mini pickup after driving in the Silverado. I have had no problems with air noise, interior plastic, etc. The only problems have been a buble in the paint and the seat belt inertial reel, both fixed to my satisfaction by the dealer at no cost. I average 17 mpg at 65 mph (drops to 15 mpg at 75 mph) and about 15 mpg off road.

The radio has a feature that adjust the sound level based on the background noise. Very usefull when you go from a smooth highway to a rough dirt road, or come to a stop at a traffic signal. There are a lot of other small items that make it nice to own (like the electric windows continue to work after you shut off the truck, until you open the door, even after you take the key out of the ignition). The price is out the door (including CA 8.25% tax)

Similar Products Used:

Toyota Tundra. The Tundra get worse milage (about 1 mpg), and has uncomfortable seats, especially the rear seats.

Strength:

Looks, smooth ride, and sound system.

Weakness:

Inferior transmission.

Ordered this vehicle to save money and ensure it was not loaded with extra features that I didn't need or want. While I was initially pleased with the performance, the truck never did obtain the listed MPG on the sticker. Best I have ever achieved was 17 MPG. Additionally, the outside mirror fell off and the battery had to be replaced all in the first year of ownership. Then to make matters worse, I just had to have the transmission rebuilt after owning this vehicle a little less than 3 years. While the truck has 80,000 miles on it, it is all highway miles, and I have serviced the vehicle as recommended in the owner's manual. GM needs to do a better job in developing their products.

Strength:

Looks, engine and has a very smooth ride(90% of the time.)I recommend this truck for the person who wants a beefy truck without the beefy ride. It is my understanding that this truck has a softer ride than the 2500's with an equivalent towing and payload capacity.

Weakness:

On some strectches of road truck bounces violently? Any suggestions on how to soften the ride? Like I said, 90% of the time, this truck rides like a cadillac. I guess it must just be the road? This truck also has a very wide turning radius, but after all it is a large truck. I owned and expedition previously, which was a truck, but made a u-turn like a car.

I am very pleased with look, feel and power of this truck. It comes standard with the 6.0 Vortec V8 300 HP. This truck is very quick / powerful and tows my 4,000 pound trailer with no problem. It comes equipped with a tow/haul mode which makes a huge difference when towing.
I exchanged the 245's for Bridgestone AT Dueler 265's and raised the front end up a couple of inches which gives truck a great look without costing alot of money. It looks like a stock 4x4.

This truck is equivalent to and stronger than all standard 2500's on the road.

Strength:

Plenty of power. Good road manners. Decent fit and finish. Not a rattle in the thing even on some pretty poor back roads. On a decent road at 75 mph it is so smooth in ride and quiet that you need to keep thinking about the fact that you are moving.

Weakness:

As big as it is, front seat leg room is barely adequate. Side curvature at roof line is pretty severe compared to prior years models and this doesn't go well with you hat. This is the lux truck of Chevrolet and it does not have ashtray, cigar lighter or door storage pockets in the rear cockpit. The 8.1 litre engine is not economical with fuel so if you are looking for high fuel mileage don't buy it. Get a mo-ped instead. You might expect 9-11 mpg in town and 13 to 15 (downhill with a tail-wind) on the road. OPEC loves this one. The absolute worst thing are those damn plastic hub covers with the cute little plastic psuedo nuts. 100% non-functional. Had to have be designed by the incompetent son of some corporate executive who got his engineering degree via mail order.

This seems to be a pretty decent vehicle so far. Doing business with the dealer(Nimnicht Chevrolet in Jacksonville,Fl) was a pleasure. Invoice plus 2.5% and no dealer add ons. Trade-in value was right on with prices of similar '97 Chevrolet trucks advertised in classifieds. Vehicle delivered is top condition--no sloppy dealer detailing. Only post delivery problem was with the power windows which occurred in 2nd week of ownership. Dealer had several service bulletins re this problem and it was promptly corrected. This truck has a very comfortable ride for a 3/4T and traveling 750 to 800 miles per day is not a tiring experience. The seats may be adjusted to fit your body conformation and the lumbar support is great to keep your back from aching on a long haul. The 8.1 litre engine gives adequate power for most tasks and works well with the Allison transmission. Engine braking feature of Allison transmission works well in controlling downhill speed under loaded conditions. 4WD on this long unit is good for keeping you out of trouble in pastures and on soft roads but is, by virtue of long wheel base, not anything for serious off-roading. Disc brakes all around are big improvement over old drum-disc brake system.

Very improved in braking, ride and general road-handling compared to the '97 Silverado I had and I liked that truck.

I have had this truck for over a year and I love my chevy. I've never had a rattle or any other mechanical problems, other than the one recall, that took less than a day to have replaced. After I purchased my truck a couple of my friends were so impressed with my truck that they also bought the same model and year truck. I've read the other reviews and I really can't believe anyone would be unhappy with the silverado. I think the reason for some of the bad reviews is that only the really unhappy consumers have the desire to take the time to fill out this form. I say this because I know over a dozen guys in fort worth that have a either a 99' or 00' silverado, and not a one has ever had a significant problem with their truck.

Weakness:

Gas mileage (15 but I knew that!)turning radius.

I love this truck. I tried the Dodge but the engine puts out less hours power and gets less gas mileage. I did not try the Toyota because I wanted a REAL full size truck. The truck drives like a dream. The only complaint I have is the turning radius is really bad. However, I make sure and park far away from other cars. I added dual exhaust system to it and a spray in bed liner. My wife even likes it better than her 2001 Chevy Tahoe. I currently have 7k on it and have not yet experienced one problem. I also brought the extended warrently because so many people (not sure if its true or not) have been saying that there they have a lot of mechanical problems. So far, I can't say enough about this truck.

Strength:

Good looking truck and the 3/4 ton should serve our purpose.

Weakness:

Possibly, (God forbid) the transmission. As stated, time will tell.
and...wimpy, cost-savings Firestone tires.

The jury is still out on this rig. Lookin' around for the oil filter as it was time for the first change since purchased (3000 miles) and discovered a LEAKING HEAD GASKET!!! Reminiscent of 1986 after having purchased a brand spankin' new GMC JIMMY and headed for the truck after having worked a 12 hour stint at a hospital in Bradenton, FL only to find ~ 1/2" or so of rainwater on the entire floorboard. Windows were tight, no sunroof...what in the ----? A flaw in the firewall whereby water ran into the truck freely.
Back to the Silverado...beautiful truck but this doesn't look too promising out of the chute. Another pretty American made piece of junk?
We'll see. Oh, did chunk those questionable Firestone tires into the storage shed out back in lieu of those more proportionately sized and untouchable Michelin LTX M/S.
Got em on the 4 RUNNER with nearly 70K miles on the rubber and still ample
tread.

Power/acceleration, gas mileage, room, comfort, style.

Weakness:

Poor traction in wet conditions. My guess is that the stepside make the rearend pretty light which could be a lot of the problem.

This is my first full size truck and I have to say that I am impressed. I've had it almost a year and I couldn't be more pleased. The little V-8 is absolutely fantastic. Acceleration is great in all situations and the mileage is 17-18 in the city(about 21 on the hwy). I grin everytime I get on it. I don't have anything to tow except a jetski so I really can't say how it would handle a big load. My guess is it would do just fine. If you are someone who likes a truck but doesn't have a lot of work for one this little V-8 is the only way to go. Otherwise get the 5.3 or 6.0. I know people with each and they love theirs too. I plan on having this truck for a long time. No problems at this point.
