Had oil leak x2, then car died & new engine & fuel line were put in. 3 days later all the oil leaked out & it is back in the shop now. Can't wait to get rid of it. Has 7,500 miles on it so far.

Strength:

Much good under the hood beautiful truck, yet very functional very comforatable, even off-road everything you'd want from a mid-sized truck

Weakness:

loves gas needs a deeper voice, i.e. horn, exhaust light in the tail when unloaded

Great truck with a comfortable interior that doesn't break your butt on those hard bumps. Plenty of power to go darn near vertical on hill climbs. This is my first truck, and I couldn't believe the way it'll climb anything with little effort. Rides almost too smoothe on those long drives ( almost go went to sleep a couple of times!). I used to drive an '98 V-6 2x4 as a work vehicle, this one is so much better, although I do like the newer body styles. I agree with everyone when they say that it needs a balls-ier sound to it. A deeper horn and slightly throatier exhaust would be nice. Does shift hard, and I tend to squeal the tires accidentally a little too often. More engine than weight, I guess. I've got one question for you Dakotians out there: Why do Mustangs and the like feel the need to drag race me all the time? I'm constantly staring at a battle on almost every red light. If first gear wasn't so low, and my road traction so much lower than a car's, I could tear up some hot-rodders! Nothing funnier than beating someone while towing a loaded trailer or a boat, though.

Strength:

Power, gas miliage, comfort

Weakness:

Ground clearance- the 1997 models have a lot more than the previous years.

Heres to the guy dogging the dakota. Shut up! You may have a lemon but the dakota is far from what you described. You said the v-6 is not very powerful. My v-6 will bark the tires in 3rd gear! And it has 170,000 miles on it. You said that the interior is cramped, your crazy! I am six foot three and have driven it from Arkansas to Arizona several times with no problems. I could have taken our newer family car but I decided to take my KOTA. I currently get an avg of 19 mpg but when I get on the highway and set the cruise to 70-75 I can get 23! The dakota is the greatest pickup made. My 95 model is the best of both worlds. It can take a corner as fast as a car and then go off road. Ground clearance is not the best but it is the best compromise. When my KOTA goes down I will be back at the Dodge dealership to buy another one! Don''t put down the dakota because you may have gotten a lemon.

Entire drive train, suspension, ABS braking system

I have owned this truck since new. It is my first and LAST Chrysler product purchase. This is a 1998 Dodge Dakota SLT 4WD loaded truck. Currently 74000 miles. At 500 miles the rear end went out. At 36000 miles the heads cracked, At 30000 miles the front end was rebuilt due to really badly worn ball joints. The front end has been rebuilt 4 times since as the parts wear out. The trans has been rebuilt and the transfer case around 50000 miles. Then back to the dealer for major trans leaks a week later. The ABS system has been replaced (brain and half of the sensors) at 45000 miles. Just got it back from the dealer with another new rear end last week. CD player crapped out (rarely used) around 50000 miles. Can''t wait to see what breaks next. Good thing I purchased an extended warantee!

3.9 V6 Base no frills truck. Great Truck. I currently have over 200,000 miles on it and it still goes strong. Only major things replaced/rebuilt was the transmission at 163,000 and the radiator. Plenty of power to tow a boat and haul what is needed.

Strength:

Comfortable, smooth, lots of uses with the 4 doors.

Weakness:

v6 engine is wimpy, runs rough in colder weather, lots of noises and and odd sounds.

Very useful and practical truck. Good size and comfortable ride. I got th e V6 Quad Cab 4x4 which is underpowered. Get the V8. Would not but one again as I had lots of little things go wrong. Reliability is poor, feels like it is going to fall apart in 2 years.
